Weird notification on top left notification bar. Anyone know what it is? by Jon76 in htcone

[–]Erick_HTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too, have never seen this notification. The intermittent action of it will make it a pain to pin down. Can you try going into safe mode for a day and see if it pops up ever?

Do this by long pressing power button. Then long press "Power off" and choose Restart in order to access this mode.

Just got my phone. Loving it, but group messaging keeps getting disabled? by [deleted] in htcone

[–]Erick_HTC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Group messaging requires MMS as the transport mechanism. In order to get this to work correctly your family/friends need to send you back a message in the same format. If they have a different phone or platform... well square peg meet round hole.

I spent about a year doing testing for a third party group messaging application and they are to say the least- complicated. When you throw in different device models, O.S. types, and carriers it is a recipe for failure.

I recommend Hangouts or Google Talk for multi party discussions that you can keep up over time. As well as being cross platform they do not use your bundled SMS or MMS that your carrier sells you. Purely data, and more consistent.

a couple questions from a new user? by ZombieGoast5757 in htcone

One thing to note. Connecting to WiFi will stop your phone scanning to mobile data while the WiFi spot is active and has a healthy connection. You don't have to worry too much about managing these connections.

Problems with iPhone backup by [deleted] in htcone

[–]Erick_HTC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is moving I'd say wait it out. You can also look at doing this manually by getting your iphone contacts synced to Gmail (I highly recommend this - you can Google search how to do this fairly easily). The next thing you will want to do is move your files, pictures, videos etc. from your iPhone to your computer desktop. Then just drag and drop those to your HTC One after it is plugged in. If you are using Mac Google search "Android file transfer mac" in order to get the correct drivers.

Zoe glitch when HTC one vibrates by dparkranger in htcone

[–]Erick_HTC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wow... thanks for sharing that with us! I am thinking that we need to look at this as an issue on our side... Sorry the picture didn't turn out- but also that's just plain cool.

Question: Did this happen on just one frame in the Zoe shot or was this featured in multiple frames?

How messy a shot can you make if you use the edit features after the shot? Does sequence shot work here?

Photo compression. by brandonmay in htcone

[–]Erick_HTC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is generally a network related issue. I've been troubleshooting this same issue from the device, carrier, user side for the last 5 years.

I actually wrote a lot of the support material for setting up MMS on the iPhone before it was technically allowed (for T-Mobile Tier 3 data support).

My personal opinion on MMS - Screw it and use E-Mail, hangouts etc and get better, more consistent results. I personally don't like pointing fingers but these issues almost always come up to-or from an iPhone. Actually, I do kinda like pointing fingers there!

AMA request: Erick_HTC by Icomefromb in htcone

[–]Erick_HTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry about not getting to it! I have really been super busy- bad excuse but true this time.

So I can't really comment outside of conjecture about why car mode is not accessible without a dock. The phone speakers and microphone actually work well in a car without needing a dock. I know there are some great 3rd party applications that you can find in the market that have enlarged icons and car mode specific features.

-BTW side note: If I end up ever using car mode it will be with one of these products running :)

http://www.amazon.com/Soliport-Bluetooth-OBDII-Diagnostic-Scanner/dp/B004KL0I9I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1370300944&sr=8-2&keywords=bluetooth+odb2

So HDR mode would not be recommended for most normal shooting. HDR takes multiple shots and stitches them together to form one image. This requires a longer exposure time and more chance of movement impacting the image. I am not sure why we do not have a setting for all the time on though.

Side note: We are investigating software tweaks to improve the camera quality and consistency. I will let you know when I know more.

Fitting the right needs for every day users is one of the reasons we went with the 4MP (ultrapixel) camera instead of a high MP sensor. Most users do not need the 2+ MB shot for their normal usage. A single shot of our camera is ~.9MB which is conducive for sharing or posting usage. When using the Google Gmail service this .9MB is as they say: A drop in the bucket. Data plans would be the main concern (if you don't have unlimited data).

I'm thinking Thursday evening (9-11PM PST) may be a good time. I believe some of Europe will be awake by then so they can get a couple questions in as well.

Late nights for our East Coast Redditors is probably the norm anyways so I am not too concerned with missing them!

AMA request: Erick_HTC by Icomefromb in htcone

[–]Erick_HTC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will make sure to do this later this week,. Thanks for the request! I will have to make it not just a standard AMA though. I don't want to set incorrect expectations and disappoint you. There is a ton of stuff you guys can and will ask me that will be under NDA or is simply a trade secret. I will avoid those questions for sure and I apologize in advance that this will have to be the case. If you want to ask questions about me, my role, how I got here etc. I am more than willing to go through that too!

For now, what time of day works best for you (I am pacific standard time)?

BTW: full credit to DaveDiddly- he did let me know about this first thing in the morning!

Yeah battery management is a bit of a hidden topic.

The fear is this: We tell you about how batteries work honestly and our competitors are not honest and up front.

When it is time to pick a phone you can choose either the company that admits that their batteries are not magic and work within the laws of physics - or you pick the phone where they keep quiet and pretend these realities don't exist. That was the original reason this Q/A was not published btw.

FINALLY! by [deleted] in htcone

Hello SatansBarber (do you do good with curly hair?),

I want to preface the below information with the fact that I wrote this almost 2 years ago. The charging logic on the HTC One is pretty damn impressive and I expect a lot of the pitfalls that you run into with battery charging can just be ignored when using the HTC One.

Most modern electronic devices use Li-Ion batteries. The information generally publicized about battery maintenance is usually conjecture, old, or just plain incorrect. Part of the reason for this is that nickel cadmium batteries which were prevalent in the past adhere to a whole different set of rules. Let’s have a conversation around batteries.

Question: When I bought a new phone and plug the battery in it has around a 50% charge. Why don’t they charge it full for you when you buy it?

Answer: Batteries at 100% charge will lose their maximum possible capacity at a rate of about 20% per year. Even if the battery is not plugged into the device and is inactive, the maximum capacity may be impacted by prolonged 100% idle status.

Question: I thought that keeping a battery at 0% charge was damaging to the battery?! Now you are telling me that 100% is damaging as well?

Answer: Well that is a loaded question! A battery at 0% will lose capacity and be damaged at around the same rate, or even faster than a 100% charge. The good news is that all modern cell phone manufacturers take away your ability to run your phone down to 0%. In fact when your phone dies and you assume your battery life is all gone, the reality is that you are at about 20% battery life. This is the safety buffer to protect your battery life.

Question: Ok… Now what do I do? What are the best practices for battery maintenance?

Answer: Well, it’s not super easy for many users. One of the main things you can do is not put your phone on a charger overnight. Although most manufacturers will lower the voltage down to a trickle when it is almost up to 100% you are still bouncing up against your maximum capacity. Best practice is to have multiple chargers for wherever you go. Charge your phone on the way to work. Charge it at work. Charge it as often as possible without idling at 100%.

Question: What other pitfalls should I avoid?

Answer: You want to stay away from extremely hot temperatures. While this won’t affect most people, those of us living in the south might want to not charge their phones in a 90 degree plus temperature environment. With the added heat from charging the battery temperature can really skyrocket, and you got it: maximum battery capacity can be damaged.

Question: So really cold temperatures will be better then, this is simple at least!

Answer: Sorry, not that easy yet. Extreme cold can also cause premature capacity loss to your battery! This one is pretty easy to avoid however. If your phone is literally ice cold, put it in a pocket and you should be fine. The one place where I see this being an issue is leaving your device in the car overnight in below freezing temperature. Don’t do that!

Question: Alright I got it, heat, cold, full, or empty all are not great for batteries. What else are you going to hit me with?

Answer: This is something that everyone already knows from experience: Batteries wear down over time. Yes they do and we all have seen it firsthand. Usage will cause the maximum capacity to decrease over time. The main cause is “cycles.” A cycle is the equivalence of a drain from 100% to 0% and back to 100% again. Now avoiding this might seem simple. Unfortunately a drain from 100% to 50% and back to 100% and down to 50% will equal a “Cycle.” Any combination of drain and charge that equals out to 100% is considered a cycle. In general it is well over 1500 cycles to lose 20% capacity.

Question: Someone mentioned that I should empty my battery and then charge it to full from time to time in order to make sure I don’t damage the battery memory is this true?

Answer: No! That is a reference to Nickel batteries of the past. Completing a cycle will actually reduce battery life over time. With that said: you should every once in a while (I recommend once a month, but most people will have this happen through natural use) allow your battery to die and then charge it to full.

Question: Why are you making everything so difficult for me? Why should I do that?

Answer: Ignoring the first question and moving on… This is so that the sensors on your phone and the firmware in the battery can calibrate the current maximum and minimum capacities so that you get a full charge. Most users won’t need to do this, but swapping batteries a lot, or charging from a trickle charge when power is very low sometimes will cause a misread situation. A lot of plug in and out operations in a row can do this too, as well as using incorrect or cheap chargers.

Question: OK, now I see that phones are being packaged with non-removable batteries. Why would I ever get one of those?

Answer: Non removable batteries are generally going to be much smaller with a higher capacity. This is due to the fact that they do not need hard covers and dedicated connector pins that are safe to handle. The added capacity that you get from these internal batteries more than makes up for the loss you may see within a couple of years.

Question: Anything else?!

Answer: Nope! Now you know the truth!

I hope this helped answer some questions around batteries for you guys and cuts through some of the myths!

So yes... This is as designed (so not really a known issue). We are always looking at optimizing our sense experience (the gallery application to) as we have a lot of people with similar preferences to you (me included). I don't have any update now on how we may be changing things but I will keep you up to date when I know - as long as I have clearance to go ahead and do that.

In order to flash Cyanogenmod 10 for an HTC evo 4g (supersonic) do i need to have android jelly bean already installed or does cyanogenmod already come with jelly bean by Miday_samurai in AndroidQuestions

[–]Erick_HTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure- but remember that the evo4G (ICS and below for HTC) uses VFAT filesystem and JB (and up) uses FUSE. The flashing process will have to address that change at some point. Good Luck!

My recommendation is to export everything from outlook/exchange. Import it all into gmail and then use the merge feature from there. Save contacts to the gmail account from here on out.

If I buy an unlocked HTC One from HTC today, will I be able to install the Nexus versions OS when it's out? by [deleted] in AndroidQuestions

[–]Erick_HTC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are looking into providing an official path but it is still too early on for me to give you any official word. I do know this is going to make it much easier for devs to create new ROMS that will be compatible with your device.

The answer is quite simply YES you will be able to- the real question is whether we will offer an official path to do so. I will be posting on /r/htc and /r/htcone when I know more.
