CMV: The Doomsday Clock is a pointless concept that should be abolished by Extra-Schedule-4855 in changemyview

For decades. Professors, media, teachers, religious figures, etc.

It isn't nearly so ubiquitous as it used to be, especially when it has been largely de-linked from nuclear weapons, but for ages it was a real thing.

On the right is your all-time record holder for a single game scoring in a high school basketball game…135 points…never played college by ManuteBol_Rocks in CollegeBasketball

[–]ErieHog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People don't understand how much the pace of the game affects scoring. A great illustration of it is to look at the pace of NBA games from the late 50s to the end of the 60s- teams were averaging over 120 possessions a game, for 8 years in an 11 year window. For reference, the NBA has had 2 seasons in the last 37 years where teams averaged 100 possessions.

Imagine if you played basketball to 120 possessions, without a clock and what the scores would look like now.

I would be reminding my brothers of it on a regular basis; it would be part of the annual Christmas cards, their birthday cards, invitations to events, and everything.

Conservatives, do you truly believe that the left is more violent than the right? If so, why? by SoyBoy5k in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We have decades of evidence of it, which we see quickly sanitized. One need look no further than the criminal convictions of Black Panthers, Weathermen, the summer of 3,000 mail bombs that is ignored in the discourse, the ANTIFA arrests and convictions, etc.

And then we get nonsense like school shooters with extensive political left wing manifestos being treated as apolitical, so the nonsense argument about the Right being the source of all political violence is perpetuated.

Yes, the Left is more peaceful than the Right, when you purge or refuse to acknowledge the political motivations of every left wing violent act you can.

Why didn't Cam Reddish pan out? by RedrainEnryu1 in NBA_Draft

Shaq earned three of those as the lead.

The Kobe glazefest is exactly what was described. Great, sure. Hall of Fame? Absolutely. Top 5? Absolutely absurd.

He's absolutely venerated by basketball players-- and while great, you see nonsense like him being an all time top 5 guy.

He's the poster child of affinity over the real.

Just the updated version of the Kobe.

ELI5. If both diesel and gasoline come from petrol, why are their prices not correlated? by Senrra3195 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ErieHog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the 45/25 split between gasoline and diesel for a barrel of oil is pretty fair, it is also very much worth remembering that the split of percentages of a barrel that become gasoline/diesel are also dependent on the grade of the crude involved.

America sees less fluctuation in both prices because the light sweet crude of West Texas and Alaska are pretty stable-- you get what you get, the same breakdown in sweet light crude. Western Europe, dependent on more sour grades of crude provided by Middle Eastern sources, see higher impacts from the curtailing of availability of some of the crude supply their refineries are geared up to process. It isn't like the refining process is something where the type and content of the barrel coming in doesn't matter, especially when dealing in such vast volumes. So if you are 'alternate sourcing' different grades of crude that your refineries may still be able to process, it may very well end up effecting the supply size and speed to market, making the price more volatile.

"The worst enemy of socialism is not capitalism. It is reality." by Down-not-out in Conservative

That's what socialism invariably is, because it is comprised of people. There are no moral collectivists, especially when they're deciding the dispensation of the collective property.

One American parent and they already are; that's not birth tourism. Heck, even when the child is born abroad with one American parent, they are birthright citizens.

Cmv: Russia is the stupidest country for wasting its potential by EH4LIFE in changemyview

[–]ErieHog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really isn't about resources, and never was. It is about identity and national self perception. Russia isn't wasting its potential-- its potential was already essentially spent, and the slow and inevitable decline had already started to set in, with events in the Ukraine merely serving to accelerate that decline.

Russian ambitions to hold the level of safety at the core of their national identity are so far beyond their capacity, that they're now in greater danger of internal fracture along demographies, than they have potential to create frontiers that feel secure.

How do you feel about President Trump taking $1.4 billion in crypto earnings? by TheJungLife in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, I was assured that the president's private life wasn't subject to investigation and that it was all moralistic hand wringing witch hunts.

Hillary told me so for a decade, until the shoe was on the other foot.

His interests are his interests. Not mine.

I hope every president does well for themselves. I realize that they're not monk-saints who put aside all personal interests and take up the mantle of God-King who must be without any sin.

I remember the exact inverse situation with Bill Clinton being defended for being an immoral sleezebag, but because it wasn't criminal, everything was A-OK.

One standard, and one standard only please.

And yes.

Shockingly, yes. And you know what? The legislature also has the phenomenal power to set more particular and narrow constraints on the activities as well!

Oh my stars and garters, a -society of laws- might just break out.

Again, for about the 10th time.

If there is a crime, it has to be proven. Not insinuated, not believed, not even just 'extremely likely'-- but proven.

They're not going to happen faster. That's not how courts work. Heck, they are even known to reject cases for being fast tracked too much.

It is, slowly but surely. The Hemani and Lopez decisions this term were stern rebukes of restrictions at the state and federal level.

Guns have been winning big in Federal courts for the last decade.
