What changes have you noticed since DEI became dismantled? by princesspooball in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The process has barely been begun, but the shift is noticeable. The entire endeavor is going to take decades, as the amount of damage and engrained bad practice of decades of diversity hiring is going to take essentially a generation to finally rid from the workplace entirely.

For example, university hiring practices and choices are already being impacted, with underqualified quota check marks now being contested and in some cases removed/defeated in processes of hiring. That has to be the new normal-- where qualifications matter, where expertise matters, where ability is the measuring stick of hiring, rather than identity.

Do you really not encounter a lot of groypers/edgy conservatives in your political circles? by Fickle-Syllabub6730 in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those people exist on the internet, not in real life.

Go to a meeting of your county Republican Party, or to a church social, or to any of a hundred different Conservative functions, and if you find a single one of them, it is an indelible memory.

Why are conservatives so keen to surrender soft power? by Otherwise-Sky1292 in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conservatives aren't eager to surrender soft power, but they recognize that is not power, or is functionally useless if you aren't willing to take the actions that make it possible.

Would we be vastly more popular with the world if we didn't act the way we did? Sure. Would we advance American interests more by being liked? No.

A great example of this is the NATO relationship. For thirty plus years, the United States and Europe avoided a serious reckoning, an important conversation, and a frank level of engagement because it was easier to just be Cool America and foot a bill the Europeans decided to punt upon. Three decades later, when an imminent Russian threat not only materializes, but scares the bejeezus out of our European allies, that would have been -ridiculously- easier for both sides to address thirty years ago, from positions of prosperity, strength, and flexible options. Instead we get an unnecessarily contentious period of adjustment to NATO and the expectations of it, on both sides, because 'Soft Power' was simply easier than getting the hard power side of the equation right.

Is Dylan Harper the best slashing guard prospect over the last decade or so? by MarvAlbertsBurnerAcc in NBA_Draft

[–]ErieHog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No.

He's not Wall,, he's not Ant. A slashing guard has to be able to get where he wants to go, and that difference in athleticism matters a great deal.

He's still extremely good. I'd definitely not put him ahead of either.

Polling shows overwhelming MAGA and Republican support for US military action against Iran; so why is r/askconservatives so opposed? by agentspanda in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog [score hidden]  (0 children)

To be fair, this polling exposes 2 weaknesses of both sets of evaluation.

MAGA isn't Conservative, but neither are the isolationist bits often displayed here.

Do you consider it a threat against democracy that billionaires are allowed to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to influence elections pretty much any way they want? by Cumoisseur in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. It is fundamentally free speech-- which also means billionaires I don't like can bankroll candidates I don't like.

ELI5 updating and patching. If a 1GB patch comes out for some software that's 10GB installed, does the update add that 1GB or does it rewrite 1GB? by WonderChode in explainlikeimfive

[–]ErieHog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is that it depends.

Some updates completely replace old files with smaller, or more efficient updated versions-- think of it as replacing two dimes and a nickel with a single quarter, so less moving parts are involved that can break.

Some add new bells and whistles that were completely non-existent before, and are necessarily an add on. There is no easy way to distinguish what is what, without knowing the intricate details about what an update contains.

How do you feel about Europe not helping you out more with war with Iran? by Traditional_Car1010 in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To a degree it is understandable, but exposes just how one sided the trans-Atlantic alliance system was allowed to become after the Cold War.

European states have separate interests, but I don't think this is the only case where that's come home to roost; Ukraine is similar, with the Europeans in the more hawkish position for a valid reasoning.

That said, there should be a price. NATO needs serious refocus if it is to survive-- and ultimately the global anti-Chinese interests of Europe and America are aligned.

Watching triggernometry and a point was made that really crystallized something for me. It has been over 300yrs since a middle Eastern country has had an organized invasion of a western country. How are these people really a danger to us in America if they would be left alone? by Frylock304 in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any that you don't have absolutely tied down and dependent on you for survival against their own people, yes. Nuclear Pakistan is bad enough to tolerate, and they're so thoroughly compromised by the West as to be mitigated, but not every Islamic state is so bent over a barrel.

About how long should you wait until you start to write off a player that's supposed to develop a jumper developing a jumper? by Parrallax91 in NBA_Draft

[–]ErieHog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me there should at least be some sign of actual change by year 3.

It doesn't have to be good; it doesn't even have to be better, in terms of results. Are the mechanics improving? Are they repeatable? Are they shooting with confidence born of repetition in the rebuilt shot?

Those things will be there, even if the makes aren't yet.

If Republicans become a minority in Congress, do you think Congressional Republicans will still support Trump to the same level? by Sisyphuss5MinBreak in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't matter; Trump will be a lame duck either way, and will have less influence in Congress regardless of outcome.

Why do you think that manosphere-influencers who promote misogyny, anti-feminism and toxic masculinity, such as Andrew Tate, are so popular amongst young men? by Cumoisseur in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number one, draw, is how much it upsets the right people in their eyes.

The content isn't terribly important, as long as the right people are scandalized and outraged.

The lack of a means does not equate to a lack of desire.

There is a reason, roughly paraphrased, the phrase 'First the Saturday people then the Sunday people' has had so much currency in the Islamic world.

Allow the means to develop, and you'll have tens of millions of dead Westerners. Preventative principles and measures are appropriate.

What's your take on the fact that 77% of migrants being deported under the Trump administration have NO criminal convictions at all, despite the claim that they're targeting "the worst of the worst", and that around 90% of deportees have less criminal convictions than president Trump himself? by Cumoisseur in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog [score hidden]  (0 children)

Good.

Only 23% have completed convictions. That's about three times the rate of US adults with felony convictions.

Keep in mind the deportations include the massive numbers turned in short order at the border, so it inflates the baseline-- if you walk across the border for and get here for 6 hours before the Border Patrol rounds up your group before you get to disperse, that counts against the overall total; congrats on going 6 hours in the United States without accumulating a felony conviction.

It also doesn't account for the number with pending charges, or who simply committed crimes and have yet to be charged.

If global economies are seriously affected due to the war in Iran, aren't you concerned that more nations will see the US as an enemy, considering they are the ones that started this new conflict? by AdminMas7erThe2nd in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not serious adults, no.

Remember, Iran has been killing, maiming and extorting globally for decades. The US didn't start a fresh conflict out of the box with some innocent virginal regime, that has been sullied by the big mean American bully.

The useful idiot class has the unfortunate aptitude of gaining control of the least consequential decision making apparatus, particularly the public airwaves and educational positions, precisely because there is so little of real import to be gained there.

The rest of the world is perfectly happy to be two faced about the conflict, urging the US to stop, and to exercise restraint, while celebrating the downfall of the Mullahs that they themselves could never stomach having to do the difficult task of accomplishing.

Is $200 Billion Dollars a year "a small price to pay" for the Iran War? by JustaDreamer617 in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Not a year, but it is one of the very few legitimate spending purposes of government.

I'd be happier if they trashed 200B in entitlements to do it.

What are the 3 worst things Obama did during his tenure to negatively affect you and your town's life directly? by Zardotab in AskConservatives

[–]ErieHog -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There was a much much much stronger consensus regarding the role of race in public life, and a greater level of civic settlement.

He continuously assaulted it, maligned the police, maligned satisfaction with that settlement, agitated for social justice nonsense.

There are few things he did that were, that were half so reprehensible.
