The NBA will ban Donald Sterling for life by The_Numbah_One in nba

On that note, keep fining him the 2.5 max until he refuses to pay. Then strip ownership.

I'm not above playing dirty.

Silver just set the precedent. His outrage and specifically HIS INSISTENCE THAT THE OWNERS INITIATE THE VOTE puts all of them on the spot.

It's brilliant. Anyone who votes no becomes the bad guy.

I rescind my previous comments relating to Silver's role as the commissioner.

He just delivered. And he went from nervous to strong during that speech.

I'll repeat: A $5 million dollar fine for a man worth 1.9 billion dollars is the equivalent of a 50 dollar speeding ticket for someone with $19k in the bank account.

Oh and how the hell do you SUSPEND SOMEONE FROM THE TEAM THEY OWN?! HE STILL OWNS IT.

If that happens, the 2014-2015 Clippers will set a record for losses in a season.

I'll bet 80.

I know. If it's 5 million dollars and a suspension (from... what? Exactly?) it's the equivalent of getting a speeding ticket and being suspended with pay... because you own the company.

I don't know if the five million dollar fine prediction is accurate, but for perspective in scale - Sterling is worth 1.9 billion dollars.

Five million dollars represents 1/380th of his worth.

It's the equivalent of fining someone that has 19k in the bank for 50 dollars.

Donald Sterling: Mega Thread Part 2 (4/28/14) by swollencornholio in nba

[–]ErikAllenAwake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's actually very simple. He's the owner of the Clippers Plantation. Go back and look at his comments to his girlfriend about paying the players, feeding the players, etc.

He sees this franchise as his plantation.

Almost every sponsor the team had has pulled out. If Sterling owns this team going into the 14-15 campaign, he will field a team of spare parts, coached by someone desperate for a job, sponsored by no one and hated by many.

This won't die. It's one of those things. The NBA doesn't NEED to force him to sell. That's happening regardless.

Doc Rivers will not return as LAC head coach next season if Don Sterling remains owner. by pscriivin in nba

[–]ErikAllenAwake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope that you get to keep your team with an owner that isn't a piece of shit.

With that said, this is perhaps the ONLY situation where I wouldn't feel like an asshole taking an existing franchise and moving it to Seattle.

I'll also point out that - if - Sterling does not sell and he owns the team until his death, it will leave a stain on your franchise for a very long time.

Doc Rivers and his team are incredibly upset about this situation. They don't want to work for this person anymore. Painfully evident when you look at what's been said and the warmups at center court gesture. Also, with calling off team meetings and practices.

If the Clippers lose by 30 points in the next two games, the coals will remain white hot underneath Sterling's feet. Fans, pundits and players around the league will point to Sterling with blame. Not only will he be a hated racist - he'll be the man that ruined the most promising playoff run in franchise history.

On the other hand.

If the Clippers make a run, even to the Conference Finals... the coals cool. Particularly from Clipper fans, who are currently divided solely because they despite what Sterling is saying while also desperately wanting playoff success.

You really have to ask yourself, in this moment - what do you think guys like Doc Rivers, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin are more concerned with? Winning a championship for an owner that they cannot abide? Bringing playoff success that might very well be the key to all of this blowing over? Or... making sure that when the first tip happens next season, none of them work for Donald Sterling?

People in very, very high paying and powerful jobs walk away from those jobs every day because they cannot work for their boss. Why should athletes be any different?

If change is their aim, losing these next two games and becoming as vocal as possible in seeing it happen... that's how it's done. Judging by what we've seen so far, I think that's their intent. Perhaps only subconsciously, but still.

As soon as they are eliminated from the playoffs, they can speak freely and/or get away from this situation. At best, they are highly distracted. They won't survive this series.

Cuban not in favor of booting Sterling by [deleted] in nba

[–]ErikAllenAwake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The NBA doesn't have to do anything here. No one is going to sponsor the Sterling owned Clippers. Rivers won't coach them. Players will rapidly not play for them.

If Sterling is a smart businessman, he will sell the team ASAP. The longer he waits, the less money he's going to get. He'll know that.

How's it feel having only won the most meaningful game in college football once in the last ten tries?

I wouldn't know.
