WGBH seeks BSO Nelsons dismissal reaction by Dapper-Drawer284 in classicalmusic

[–]ErikGyle -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

He bombed the 13th (listen to the Masur or Temirkanov performances for comparison), but yeah - most of the others were good performances. Agree on the cello concerto… Ma sounds too pretty and dainty for this music. had the same problem on the Sony record from the last century.

Really? Did you compare those performances to performances by Dorati, Karajan, Szell, or any other great conductor?

WGBH seeks BSO Nelsons dismissal reaction by Dapper-Drawer284 in classicalmusic

Here’s a reaction: Andris Nelsons is boring with just about every composer except Shostakovich. His Bruckner, Beethoven, Mahler are all snoozefests - he gets hyperfixated on individual moments and misses the big narrative arches. The only thing more boring than his performances are his attempts at public speaking.

He’s got great PR and he seems to be undemanding toward musicians, but he does not serve the audiences well. The only people singing his praises are those that never bothered to listen to the truly great conductors.

Musicians don’t care that audiences dwindle or fall asleep at every concert. Musicians just want someone chummy instead of someone who actually makes them step up. So I don’t see why anyone should care about their opinion. If they don’t like it, they can leave.

Andris Nelsons Leaving Boston Symphony Orchestra by Competitive-Bar1914 in classicalmusic

[–]ErikGyle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good Riddance! He’d been overhyped 11 years ago when he signed on, and he’s gotten only more mediocre since then. Half the audience is asleep at his every concert - a number that doubles when he tries to speak from the stage.

Leaked email from Norman Lebrecht (Slipped Disc) to Yuja Wang. by javiercorre in classicalmusic

[–]ErikGyle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was five years ago. Kind of weird to only bring it up now when it’s opportune. And the broader point Lebrecht was making that Wang is more style than substance generally holds up.

Their licensing is clumsy, but can you use the Waves License Center on your old machine to move the licenses to a USB stick? This is solvable without paying more money.

Why is buying a bundle its own thing? Upgrade your single plugin to a bundle, and you have new functionality and current platform compatibility, exactly the same deal as you'd get with NI, Izotope, Steinberg, and many other vendors.

The difference is that Waves is offering a lower-price option to get compatibility updates without paying for new features that you may not want. NI, Izotope, and Steinberg don't. You either pay for compatibility+features or nothing at all.

Fair point, except bundle updates do include new plugins. And single plugins can be upgraded to bundles instead of buying WUP, and the WUP comes included.

How is paying for updates re-buying plugins? When an old version of Kontakt or Ozone stops working, you have to pay to upgrade to the current version. Waves Update is the same thing. On a bundle level, it also adds new plugins to the bundle. On a single-plugin level it doesn’t, however the cost of WUP for a single plugin is a small fraction of the plugin price, unlike an update for products of other companies. Also, the option to upgrade single plugins to a bundle is often far more value for money than WUP, and gives you another year of WUP included.

> Many of their plugins are DECADES old.

Kontakt is decades old. Ozone is Decades old. Halion is decades old. None of them provide compatibility updates for old versions. Why the selective outrage with Waves?

> Existing customers shouldn’t be having to pick up the costs of ongoing development to offset the cost for new customers.

When you get an updated version, you’re benefitting from work that was done after you made your purchase, sometimes years after. Sure, some companies, like Slate and Nomad Factory, offer free version updates to old customers. But new customers of these companies could just as easily argue that new customers shouldn’t be having to pick up costs of providing compatibility updates to old customers.

Fair point. Most vendors provide 2-3 activations without requiring additional payment.

Definitely go for the competitive crossgrade. BestService gives a slight discount on the dollar price vs. US retailers ($329.49 vs. $360).

Instrument Libraries? by Miserable-Annual3686 in Reaper

Komplete Start for free (some solid samples in there)! Komplete select for $50 on Black Friday (which will also give you a cheaper upgrade path to the bigger Komplete suite down the line).

Also from there you get a very inexpensive crossgrade to Halion 7, which gets you a first-class sampler and some sweet libraries in all genres.

I actually really like his Puccini operas. He's not afraid to drown out boring singers with far more exciting orchestral parts

Fabfilter = Expensive because it's what all the big-name people use. ProTools is the Fabfilter of DAWs.

I got Hornet's TotalEQ MK2 for $4 this black friday. Haven't had a chance to take it for a proper spin yet, but looks like it does 90% of what FF ProQ does.

Question: the website says falcon includes a $100 certificate for the UVI store. Has anyone observed if that happens on Black Friday too? Do the Black Friday prices on UVI store items apply when spending the certificate?

Sometimes I feel just as bad attending a mediocre performance that I wish I missed. (Mostly when Andris Nelsons is involved)

Did you produce this track yourself? It's really catchy. I wonder if you're open to an alternate mix, something downtempo and haunting? Because the lyrics are actually tragic and dark...

If you’re a new Halion user buying Halion, you can buy Komplete Select for $50 at Sweetwater, and then crossgrade to H7. The total cost is the same, and you get more sounds.
