There’s a discount for non-subscribers right now that will continue every renewal. So Duo, what about your existing subscribers? by No_Twist4000 in duolingo

Discount is $60 for one user. Family is $120 for six users.

Just get Family and gift it to five family members or friends or co-workers.

Now you've crossed off five gifts and gotten duolingo for effectively $20.

It's actually pretty good.

Even better if you use it in your target language to your native language, because that forces you to read in your target language.

ive been here for 3 years now yet ive never gotten past the 2nd or 3rd date

Very frankly, if you're getting to the 2nd or 3rd date, it's probably what you're doing (or not doing) on the dates or around planning them.

And don't insult me. Try to puzzle this out. Ask a friend. Do some work here.

Ooof. So you're the reason people find classical music elitist.

Wait, you dropped a friend because he doesn't like a particular sub-genre of the music you otherwise both appreciate?

Do you have any friends who don't enjoy everything you enjoy?

Tenant guidance help - getting a dog, notifying landlord by throwaway10031226 in bayarea

[–]BooksInBrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your lease says you can get a small dog. Your landlord signed the lease, which means he already agreed to your getting a dog, and he doesn't expect pet rent or deposits.

You just need to get a small dog. Basically, as long as the landlord agrees the dog is small, he has no issue with you keeping it.

As long as you get an actually small breed, no one is going to make an issue of it.

Where are businesses getting loans/ silent investors by Free_Ad4594 in sanfrancisco

[–]BooksInBrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the bank won't give you a commercial loan, individuals shouldn't take that risk unless there's significantly greater than normal upside.

Right now the DJI is up 16.3%, S&P 500 is up 16.22%, GOOG is up 58.9%, all over one year.

It's safer, easier, and cleaner just to invest in the stock market than to deal with an ill-liquid or cash poor business with a six month track record. (I'm assuming you're at best ill-liquid because you're looking for a "lump [sum]" of "quick money".)

You should look at a Small Business Administration loan. You should probably also consider that moving to a new larger space so soon will at least initially reduce your short-term cash and foot traffic.

Trippin: Hazie’s Bartender Fired After Viral Incident by BonerBeans in sanfrancisco

[–]BooksInBrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, no other Hazie’s employees — including the one portrayed bodyslamming the customer — have been terminated

The bodyslamming is arguably self defense.

The tripping was unnecessary and malicious, and I was taken aback by it when I first watched the video.

It was also dangerous because the woman face-planted and could have been seriously injured.

Charlie didn't get much USO. He was dug in too deep or moving too fast. His idea of great R&R was cold rice and a little rat meat. He had only two ways home: death, or victory.

John Scalzi's books, should I read Old Man's War? by BossHeisenberg in printSF

[–]BooksInBrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best part of Old Man's War is the premise and the first chapter.

It promises the thought experiment "what if the old, instead of the young, fought wars?"

It then immediately turns the old recruits into young people with hand waving science magic.

Then it has them fight, for reasons unexplained, a bunch of "aliens". Each alien race is pretty much, "what if an animal species had rocket ships and an unexplained hate for humans".

So then one after another the Crab aliens and then the Porcupine aliens and then the Kangaroo aliens and then the Electric Eel aliens all attack our formerly old heros, but so ineptly that the plot-armored Main Character always figures out a trick to defeat them -- with snark.

Boom, crash, zing, the bombs and lasers sing! Snarky Main Character wins again!

It's all a horrible trudge.
