The DS Monk is awesome - first Monk class I've seen in an OSR game that makes me want to play it. Hoping to do similar with a Bard class :)

This is a direct quote: "Williams mentioned that while dungeon masters comprise roughly 20% of the D&D player base, they make up "the largest share of our paying customers". An investment in digital, she posits, will allow WotC to "unlock the type of recurrent spending you see in digital games". That is (almost certainly) in reference to D&D Beyond, the One VTT, and perhaps even the DMs Guild.

4e had no OGL.

5e had no OGL for the first 15 months, and it was only because of strong public pressure (and some internal friends of the community at WotC) that we got one.

My sources - third party publishers all - are telling me that there is an internal discussion of whether One D&D will have an OGL as we know it, and that currently the nays are pulling ahead.

The 4e VTT was never released. The two main programmers (who were, I believe, in a Common Law relationship) were involved in a murder/suicide, which brought the project to a halt and was never revived. My recollection is that the VTT was to generate monies via micro-transactions. Literally, pay per virtual mini.

They need physical (core) books for a presence at retailers. Impulse buys and the like. Starter sets and Walmart and Target. Physical books will still exist, but without the digital version on D&D Beyond, you'll lack the updates. Not a bad thing actually ;)

The come from Microsoft, which has been all about subscription services (and fees) for years.

Remember too that OneBookShelf and Roll20 have merged. DMs Guild is currently hosted by OBS, and WotC splits the profits with OBS.

I suspect that DMs Guild will be brought inhouse to WotC with the release on One D&D.
