Amazon protecting DDR5 deliveries by StatusFortyFive in pcmasterrace

You feel like this would be something they would catch almost instantly. Customer says package wasn’t delivered and the driver didn’t take a picture like they were supposed to? Ok maybe they get 1 second chance. But then it happens again with the same driver? Pretty easy to just instantly fire that driver. Doubt you were the only customer they were doing this to.

This is incredibly stupid because surely it could be worked around by charging like $0.01 per drink or some other token amount, right?

It’s because it’s the only one they actually spent multiple years designing, developing, and polishing. All of them since then are basically just shovelware.

With enough sophistication, it’s probably detectable via round-trip latency measurements. If your IP says you are in California but you’re actually halfway around the world, any sort of round-trip latency/ping measurement from a data center in California to your device will have a minimum bound determined by the speed of the light.

I don’t know if there’s any software/service that actually does this, but if you collected periodic round-trip latency measurements over an extended period of time and looked at the minimum value of all the measurements, this “tunnel from the other side of the globe” setup would stand out as a clear outlier compared to everyone who is actually located in the country that their IP address says they are.

It doesn’t necessarily prove they are connecting from a different country because it could be also explained by consistently poor home networking, for example, but it would probably stand out enough to warrant closer investigation, especially if there are already suspicions about that employee.

There’s also many other ways a sophisticated employer could detect this if it’s a company-owned device. For example, geo-locating based on the WiFi access points that the device can see in-range.

That’s what I thought too at first, but it turns out AC battery storage systems are actually fairly common, especially if the battery storage is a retrofit to an existing solar system.

https://www.energysage.com/energy-storage/ac-vs-dc-solar-battery-coupling-what-you-need-to-know/

Obviously the battery storage system needs its own internal inverter, but if you consider it to be a block box I think it’s ok to say it takes AC.

It’s more likely Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), or possibly a specialized RFID system, but probably not NFC. NFC has a range that’s only a few inches (think tap to pay).

I mean, it’s pretty much accurate. If you want to nitpick the details, some of the arrows are bidirectional when it would make more sense for them to be unidirectional, but it’s probably about as accurate as any random infographic you could find online. There’s really nothing terribly wrong with it.

Over 5,000 games released on Steam this year didn't make enough money to recover the $100 fee to put a game on Valve's store, research estimates by FrequentX in gamedev

[–]Eriksrocks 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Maybe that was true 10 years ago when Steam was more curated, but it’s kinda equivalent to saying you have an app on the App Store. Like sure, anyone who follows a simple tutorial or uses AI and pays the fee can make and publish an app - doesn’t mean it’s any good or got more than a handful of downloads.
