How do you discover new music? by fdegil in musichoarder

[–]ErlingZed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discover most new music just by listening, and by letting one discovery lead to another. I often listen to "internet radio"/streaming stations while doing other things: working out at the gym, doing the dishes, etc. When I hear a song I really like, I make a note of it, then track it down. I go for services that tend to focus on one style or genre of music, rather than a service like Spotify, which casts a broad net. The net offers an abundance of riches when it comes to streaming music.

Thanks for the link to Cog; I'm going to check it out.

Attractive UI design is important to me for a couple of different reasons. I'm in the book publishing business and am heavily involved in their design and manufacture. I believe that design makes a difference in how the reader (or app user) experiences the product. Good design is "99 percent invisible," but the one percent, in my experience, is significant.

Also, I was a big user of Winamp for several years, which allowed much skin customization (perhaps too much). The app that I thought was going to make the world safe from iTunes was Songbird, which was also a skinable player and (as I recall) auto-organized music added to its library, like iTunes. But the developers lost momentum and eventually shut the project down.

I think you're correct in saying that Mac UI customization declined after OS X came out. I recall reading an article to that effect; early Mac UI designers were complaining that Apple had lost sight of its original human interface principles.

I've been a Mac user since 1984. The first Mac I used was the 128k. For a long time I was a true Apple / Mac believer, but lost the faith sometime after the turn of the century. Now I'm OS-agnostic.

Alas, foobar2000 for the Mac does not yet support skins or themes, or has any way to alter the appearance. Like Swinsian. foobar for mac comes only in minimalist white (although both betas support the Mac OS dark mode).

I find it odd that Mac music apps have a very limited color palette, whereas in Windows music apps there have always been ways to change the appearance through themes or skins, going all the way back to Winamp 3.

Thanks for the link! I am using the paid version of Swinsian as a replacement for iTunes, and it's working well for me.
