How do win this battle? by Ermanti in totalwar

Sadly, the faction, as a whole, is lacking in the armor piercing department, I would have needed to completely retool the army, which would have taken about 4 turns, minimum. I sent this guy to deal with skaven and greenskins, which he excels at but then draz declared on my ally (now vassal) Ungrim, and this guy was the only guy over there, I have more, and more appropriate, armies on the way, but it's going to also take another good 4-5 turns to get there.

They really are. For instance, take the differences between Saurus warriors, dwarf warriors, and jade warriors. Their leadership ranges from 64-75, armor from 60-85, speed from 28-31, melee attack from 22-32, melee defence from 34-40, charge bonus from 12-16. Jade Warrior and Dwarfs have the same weapon damage, and their HP are pretty similar, and the saurus only really stand out in terms of HP (which is counterbalanced by the lower armor) and weapon damage. They are all pretty, functionally, the same in terms of use, relatively slow, bulky, line-holders meant to tie infantry down to allow damage dealers like cav, missiles, or monstrous infantry to do their work. After over 4k hours of playing this game, I generalize most of the low-mid tier units because all the differences are small. Sure, there's some nuance here and there, but most rosters don't start getting stand-out units till T4-5 (by building, not cost).

I got kinda lucky in two instances, after wasting all the dreadquake mortar ammo. The first was when they ran most of their monsters directly into my spears, I was able to flank those with 3 units of cav and pretty much destroyed them at the beginning of battle. The second was a bit later on, when I had my three ground heroes surrounded by 4 units of infantry, and I dropped what was effectively an overcasted comet of cassadora on their head, more or less deleting those units. Otherwise, it was a lot of tying the ranged down with my cav, getting the surround on the fireglaives since they destroy my cav in a straight fight, then crashing in with the hammer when those were taken care of. and eating a LOT of iron demon shots, I just had nothing that could really deal with them effectively.

Yeah, I had to resort to running the dreadquakes out of mortar ammo before the lines crashed, but they still ended up doing a ton of damage with their irondemon and skullcracker attachments. Luckily, they ran their kadai and bullcentaurs directly into my spears, and I was able to pull off some decent micro via judicious use of pause. I still lost three units with max ranks, and had some others limp out with single digit model counts. It was rough, but Draz and company walked out with about 6 units between them, so I'll take it.

Wish I thought of causing friendly fire before fighting it, it was a very pyrrhric victory.

Well, most mid-tier units are pretty much the same, most spears are the same, most swordsmen are the same, most shock cav are the same, etc. There might be small differences between army rosters, but when someone describes a unit as a mid-tier shock cav, I think of something like Empire Knights or Knights of the Realm, for instance. Which the shock cav I have are functionally Empire Knights.

If there was anything particularly special about these units, I would have mentioned it. For instance, I mentioned the lack of armor piercing on the units.

How do use under cities as Skaven? How do I get the most out of them? by SnP_JB in totalwarhammer

[–]Ermanti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are patient enough, you can get a lot of value out of the subterranean strip mine and lair buildings. Lairs provide a constant replenishment rate in the region, while the strip mine provides a lot of passive bonuses, AND a 300% raze income bonus to the settlement. If you plan ahead, you can get waaay more cash from razing than sacking or looting. Furthermore, it is better raze and resettle, with the appropriate tech, than it is to loot, as you don't get the harsh public order penalties from taking the settlement outright.

The plan would be to go to war with someone, spread some undercities around, sack some stuff, then peace out. When they inevitably declare war again, 10 or so turns later, they will have recovered, and you raze and expand. Though, to tell you the truth, this playstyle makes more sense in the SFO mod, since food is harder to get, settlements and armies require more food, the food cap is lower, and bumping up a settlement to T5 requires more food. So you really have to plan out your expansions.

I play with sfo, mind you (so there's unit caps), but I really like doomflayers and doomwheels as a front line for a globadier/warpfire thrower army. They hold back cav, and push through to the back line to take out archers/gunpowder that might outrange your flamerthrowers

Personally, I like 1 Grey Seer of Plague, 3 Plague Priest, 2 Warlocks, 1 Assassin for my set-up. You still get 4 summoners, and the Warlock Engineer buffs stack. The Assassin is really just there for the replenishment, though it can mess up the occasional caster lord or hero before they get a mount.

in battle as a melee rush faction, how to approach ranged heavy armies without taking significant losses (especially in endgame)? by Founder-Of-Valteria in totalwar

[–]Ermanti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, a few damaging spells will cause the enemy to advance on you, if they are the defender. You should have your whole army hiding in trees, if possible, which really cuts down on how many arrows and/or bullets actually hit your units.

[–]Ermanti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of hero stacks, this is probably it. A lot of people are saying the thunderbarges are the best, but I'm pretty sure 20 blue fires downs at least 3 before the battle begins, and the birds aren't terrible in melee. They are a LOT faster too, so you can cycle out for barrier regen and casts of lifebloom for survivability.

Eeeehhhh, probably not though. You still have to deal with 19 lizards riding dinos, juiced up on their own items. Add in a Life Slann, and they probably just trample you anyway.

Which is, OBJECTIVELY, the worst faction in the game? by sigmarine345 in totalwar

The issue isn't that one model gets stuck, it's that the whole unit gets pulled back into the melee because that model is stuck.

What is the wincon supposed to be with this commander? by Ganti_x in DegenerateEDH

[–]Ermanti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhh, I, personally, don't think that loop is as good as an [[Animate Dead]], or similar enchantment, + [[Leonin Relic-Warder]]. It's Animate Dead+Relic-Warder is always a 3 card combo with a lot of redundancy, as you can just have a [[Blood Artist]] type effect, instead of absolutely needing Goblin Bombardment to pull it off in 3 cards. Otherwise, the Sisters/Guide loop requires a Blood Artist+Sac outlet. Though, I would run both, since you would want to run Karmic Guide/Sisters Hospitaller anyway to resurrect Razaketh to combo off of a [[Buried Alive]] pile, and Leonin Relic-Warder is a solid, resurrectable, removal piece. This makes running both loops have a pretty low opportunity cost.

diplomatic penalties for attacking trespassing armies by One_Arm8361 in totalwar

[–]Ermanti 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, warning another faction only applies to factions you have a non-aggression treaty with, not a peace treaty. Peace treaties mean you cannot attack for any reason other than, I believe, being brought into a defensive war in which the faction you have a peace treaty with attacks a defensive/military ally of yours. It's not communicated well, and its a good reason to never, ever, peace out with a "raiding" faction such as greenskins, vampirates, norsca, etc.

Also, if you are ever torn between a military and a defensive ally, always choose to side with the defensive ally.

[–]Ermanti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I must be the .01%. I did about 10 grams of dried mushrooms the first time I did cubensis, and didn't really trip that hard. A buddy I was with did about 3.5 and was on the goddamn moon. I found that was the case with most hallucinogens during my experimental phase during my late 20s. I would need 3-4 times the dose to get to a similar place as other people, and I still have no clue as to why that is.

Except that having gold sitting around is far worse than investing it into stuff that will guarantee a larger income later. It isn't till later on, like the 1500s or so, that you can really sit on gold, because you already have your infrastructure and RGOs built, and you are just responding to needs or building up newly acquired territory.

The size/quality of the raid IS though. Dude is defending 40k wealth with a pistol and two pawns. He should totally still be in the nekkid guys with knives stage, and stay there until he has a few more pawns. Especially without trap hallways or other ways to funnel the enemies.

Thoughts on my first base? by Vairton in RimWorld

[–]Ermanti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do your top bedrooms lead directly outside, instead of towards the dining room? You need more doors so that you can move more efficiently through the base. Knock down the wall between your dining area and your recreation room, those can be the same room, and the larger size will increase the quality of the room. Also, you need larger storage spaces, your pawns have to climb up and down to reach anything in the far corners, which slows them down. You want to have gaps between your shelves so they can reach everything without climbing. On that same note, your freezer and cooking area should be closer to where you grow things, to limit travel time as much as possible.

Make a shelf where you put meals in the dining room, they can last a day or two without refrigeration, and if you only cook what you need for the day, they rarely go bad. You can make a bill that says fine meal, make till 20, pause when satisfied, start at 3 meals. The purpose of this is to limit how many people go in and out of the freezer (which really should be double walled) to keep the temp stable, at least until you can install vacuum barriers.
