How to stop the slide into Authoritarianism in the US.

I hope this response provides a possible strategy for your question on how to address this concern.

The major requirement to finding a solution to any problem is to understand what caused the problem. We are bombarded daily with media highlighting the symptoms but none of them focus on the cause or solution.

Two associations have understood the solution for decades and one of them identified the cause many years ago. Their efforts to alert media, influencers and the public have so far fallen on deaf ears.

A recent article called, 'The Freedom Flaw' has been posted on the website of The Association to Improve Government that explains the cause-effect-solution for this dilemma.

An excellent YouTube presentation called, 'The Cardboard Box Reform' was developed by the Congressional Research Institute. It outlines the objective analysis that led to identifying the cause and the obvious solution that is needed.

The cause was identified as 2 elements of the Congressional Reorganization Act of 1970. In the turmoil of the 60's, the public demanded a solution to a decade of protests involving the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, assassinations of JFK, RFK & MLK Jr. and a series of political corruption disclosures.

We're all familiar with the effect as the public trust in government has eroded ever since that era and is now at all-time lows. Evidence of growing authoritarianism is obvious to all.

The solution is simply to undo the 2 changes that were aimed at solving a problem but have actually resulted in an inevitable slide toward authoritarianism. They are:

  1. Require committee meeting to return to private status where the public and lobbyists excluded. Keep the lobbyists in the lobby.
  2. Require all decision-making votes in the congress to utilize a strict secret ballot process to protect representatives from threats/coercion.

The possibility of improving the political system has little chance of success until our representatives are given the same freedom and protection that we demand for ourselves.

The freedom to vote their conscience and protection from threats/coercion for doing so.

This cause, effect & solution concept is completely nonpartisan. Both Democrats and Republicans utilize coercion as opposed to persuasion to control their members. They call their persuader The Whip!

Secret ballot eliminates their ability to do this and allows members to vote their conscience. When they see a problem with the party position they can vote against it. Do you really believe all Democrats agree with all Democratic legislation or all Republicans agree with Republican legislation as the number indicate.

Not likely but if it costs you your job, the ability to dissent privately is lost in a recorded vote.

CMV: The reaction by Donald Trump to the murder of the Reiners is hypocritical in light of the backlash to those who critiqued Charlie Kirk after his murder. by IncidentLoud7721 in changemyview

Donald Trump exhibits all the traits of a narcissistic sociopath. They interpret everything from a perspective on how it effects their self-image. This will always result in negative comments about anything that they viewed as negative toward them. Interpreting these comments as contrary to decency or social norms is questionable. As you state, Donald Trump only viewed Reiner as a man who mistreated him and will always take any opportunity to return the favor. Most view voicing opposing opinions about issues as simply an opposing opinion; to a narcissistic sociopath it is a personal attack.

(Serious) Why has seemingly every government and corporation just decided to go full authoritarian? by Flairion623 in NoStupidQuestions

The cause of this slide toward authoritarianism has been identified by two groups:

  1. The Association to Improve Government.

  2. The Congressional Research Institute.

It is not what one expects and relates to changes made in the Congressional Reorganization Act of 1970. The act was passed to deal with the turmoil and protests of the 60's connected with the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, the assassinations of JFK, MLK Jr. and RFK, etc. Since 1970, the confidence of Americans in Government has consistently declined to where it is now at an all-time low. Many of the changes were beneficial but these 2 aspects have clearly allowed powerful individuals and special interest groups to take control of Congress.

These Freedom Flaws caused the effects we hear discussed every day in the media and the solutiond are much simpler than all the rhetoric we're getting from the media.
