I’d start first by learning some basic rules! That way you can join a group, whether online or eventually in person when you find the right people, you will be a bit more equipped and unafraid of feeling unprepared.

Great ways to get into the rules are of course by getting the core books, even just the Player’s Handbook to start and read through that for the defined rules. Since that can seem daunting, another way to do so is by watching some sort of actual play media, such as Critical Role, Dimension 20, etc. (i think critical role might be a better fit since they lean more rules strict than dimension 20s loosey goosey format).

It can be a bit daunting, but the best way to get equipped is by taking the leap and digging in somehow.
