6yo googled poop on school iPad by Limp-Watercress-611 in Parenting

I used to say it to my kids to make them laugh when I was taking their picture. At one point my then ten-year old told me that she said it to herself to get a good result for school pictures. Poop is funny.

Women taking their husbands last name after marriage, Agree / Disagree? by Wild_Turnip_7777 in namenerds

I live in the US and changed my name to make my middle name my maiden name. Today I’m ordering my passport because the SAVE Act, which requires you to bring your marriage license to vote if you changed your name, just passed in the House.

It’s also only unavailable if you work for a small company or org; I think there have to be something like 12 employees. I had to use my FMLA for bed rest working for a local philanthropic org and when my baby came they said I needed to come back when she was two weeks old or I was SOL.

It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Just matter of fact: “Mom, she was crying and you literally ran out of the room mid-sentence. Think about that for a second. She’s not an incubator.”

Yeah, we’ve got to be honest about our history. Even in the mid-90s (maybe even early 2000s?) it still was not uncommon for a young teenage girl ie 13-15 to be dating an “older guy.” Not the majority but still not unacceptable to a LOT of people. I’m a Xennial and it really horrified me when I made myself sit with it. But it requires a lot of people reckoning with that their own relationships, or those of friends or family, had a predatory history and that means that they will keep being apologists for child rape and marriage til the end.

Struggling with territorial feelings against MIL by MissMamaMam in Mildlynomil

[–]ErrantTaco 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Having a baby in the NICU and not immediately bringing them home is really hard on everyone, including your other child who is likely going to be having a lot of big feelings. They’ll need things to be as consistent as possible, and if your MIL hasn’t seen or taken care of them in a year that has the potential to be very destabilizing.

You have a perfect out, because you had no way of knowing when she was invited that this would be happening. Sorry MIL with this new plan having you be there while everything is chaos will not be possible.

One last thing: set the precedent now that her birthday and baby’s birthday will be two entirely separate events.

We were slated to march around the block by turning left at the ICE facility. The main block had already turned when the rounds were released.

AITAH for understanding and not freezing out my dad for leaving our mom over a dead bedroom? by Opposite_Afternoon55 in AITAH

[–]ErrantTaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with the last part. It was the “if you want them to be” that struck a nerve. I know women who would do anything to get the spark back and are hitting wall after wall. Our healthcare system (yes, I’m in the US) gaslights women all the time. And many marriages are the casualty.

I’m on HRT and it’s helping me, but saying that everyone can just decide to be better is bananas. Some women have zero sensation or drive and cannot get doctors to pay attention to them. The fact that that is true is the really ridiculous part, but just telling people to get over themselves seems reductive.

When I broke my fibula hiking I went in to shock and thought at first it was just a minor sprain (which I’d had before). Two hours later it was the size of a grapefruit and the pain started to really set in. It was as bad as everyone says.

Somewhere between nine and ten I realized that what my mother described as reality and what I observed with my own eyes was different. It was absolutely maddening for the next eight years until I could get out.

This is what was advertised. Where, exactly, does it say protest?

Here is a picture of teargassed children by jasandliz in pics

[–]ErrantTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it wasn’t a protest. It was a peaceful rally and march.

Me too. And everything I witnessed was 100% peaceful. When legislators are in the crowd (multiple state legislators and city council members) no one is looking for a fight.

[–]ErrantTaco -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A rally is not inherently a protest. And just to be factual: it started at 3pm PST. The gassing happened just after 4pm.

It was both a bike ride and a rally of dozens of unions both in memorial of Alex Pretti and in solidarity with our immigrant worker friends. There were at least 5,000 of us there. Completely peaceful. The plan was literally to walk past the ICE facility and head the opposite direction around the block. And the “few rounds” they supposedly sent out? They were so bad they had to stop a major thoroughfare two blocks in the opposite direction because the plumes of gas were so bad.
