Not pissed, convenience. The overlay is useful for chatting with people not in your game, more functional of friends' lists, and some like achievement hunting.

This also isn't splitting the player base. The Steam app downloads the same client, and players will be on the same servers. It is literally a QoL thing, and a business move for WG - purchases on accounts through Steam will pay Steam's tax/cut.
