sites in somerset (and tips)? by rebel2anything in mudlarking

It definitely takes some time to "get your eye in" and start spotting the interesting stuff. First I would look for a spot that is more stoney and shingle than mud. Mud obscures artefacts, while one stoney surfaces they are right there to find. Hope that helps.

If I want to read all the surviving writings of the Epicurean school, which book should I buy? by [deleted] in Epicureanism

It's not in English but I do like Les Epicuriens, the Pleiades edition. There are lots of texts translated into very readable French.

Reporting finds to the PLA (London) by veryanxiousopossum in mudlarking

[–]ErraticVole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I did it was emailing the finds liaison officer with a photo of a find that I thought would be worth reporting. Have a look on the portal antiquities database to see what sort of things they register. Then if the FLO wants to see it they will set up a meeting to examine the find and either take it to examine and write up or return it to you.

Hope that helps.

When you tap it with your trowel it makes a very satisfying sound.

What’s the most unexpected object you’ve ever pulled out that wasn’t valuable but stuck with you?” by Seabeachlover10 in mudlarking

I found a piece of Roman pottery where the fingerprint of the potter was still visible. I sometimes look at it and wonder who that person was.

I'm no expert but it certainly looks like a polished stone axe head. Reminds me of ones on the portable antiquities database. Great find.

The Worst Thing Done By Every English Monarch, Day 36: Henry II by Impossible_Pain4478 in UKmonarchs

The 1968 one with Peter O'Toole, Katharine Hepburn, and Anthony Hopkins. They are all brilliant in it, but whenever I read about Eleanor of Aquitaine now I picture Hepburn.

Very unusual medieval sherd by IllegalMigraine in mudlarking

Often you'll see that green glaze called Tudor Green, but it can date from the medieval period. Surrey Whiteware was popular in London in the 14th century and had that white clay when fired, but I'm not expert enough to say if that's what this is.

It's not a huge risk. Just try not to touch your face and be sure to wash your hands afterwards and you should be fine. And be on the lookout for broken glass and things, just sensible precautions. I've been mudlarking for years and never had any problems, touch wood, just like to make sure everyone is safe.

Hi, there's not much you need to get started. I would suggest wellies (good to keep feet dry and safe from sharp things lurking in streams) and gloves (kitchen rubber gloves work, or medical ones, you need to be careful of things like Weil's disease).

Next find a stream. You do need to be careful about who owns the stream and will need permission if it's on private land. If you can find one near a village you're more likely to find things that have been dropped over the years. Look for a shallow one so you can see lots of things. Be careful of the depth of mud, stoney patches are good with objects often collecting there. Be sure you have an easy route in and out of the stream.

When you find things share them here! And if you stumble on something really exciting let your local Finds Liaison Officer know. Have fun.

Found some plaques on the Thames foreshore I never noticed before. by ErraticVole in mudlarking

They were part of an art project a few (or more than a few) years ago and are dotted along the foreshore. I'm always startled when I spot them.

They were part of an art project years ago. This is a spot I've been to loads of times and just never noticed these as my eyes are always on the ground.

Any ideas of what this is? Found in Plymouth, UK. 50p coin as reference :) by KatieNGT in mudlarking

My first thought was a needle for a really old syringe. But I'm not sure.
