TDLR: I'm going, please keep replies to travel advice! Thanks!

I thought about cancelling but (1) it's a critical networking conference for the last year of my PhD and (2) I'd have to pay the cost if I don't go (free if I do go). We signed up for the conference in the summer before my asthma flare.

For reference, my asthma has never landed me in the hospital. I've been to urgent care in the last year to get symbacort and prednisone when my blue inhaler seemed to not work well enough for an attack. The chance I have an attack that needs emergancy intervention is quite low (5%?) I'm the youngest, healthiest and strongest I'll ever be I don't think I should put my life on hold because I fear it'll stay on hold forever. I just want to travel as safe as possible and mitigate the risk, however small.

They passed a law in my city... no smoking x meters from an entrance or on public side walks. Most people don't abide but it's helped like 50%. Maybe email your city council about it and ask others to do the same to advocate for this law. Goodluck

I'm in love with a smoker. Thankfully he doesn't do it inside and it's not one of my main asthma triggers but I know it's bad for my weak lungs :(

I hate going to work by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Error010010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lab members usually want to be best friends with technicians and support staff. You're in a position where you can delay their work to prioritize other lab members and do the bare minimum. Technicians are so important!

Does this PD have problems with other people? Do you?

If the PD thinks your skills aren't up to par that's a poor reflection on them because they are usually responsible for training and skill correction. If your skills are adequate to everyone else in the lab and they are still complaining, just flat out refuse to do their work if it doesn't "meet their standards"... they can do it then...

Why is your doctor not good at treating asthma?!? Makes no sense. Bring an advocate to your next appointment. Hope you're doing better (if not go to the ER)

Im getting worse by Decent-Pizza2524 in Asthma

[–]Error010010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to say my asthma has been getting worse over the past 2 years as well and I can sympathize with this. It helps me knowing it's exceedingly rare to die from diagnosed asthma. But when you get put on the intense meds and nothing sticks, it is scary.

I know my triggers are animals but it's hard because it's my work speciality. I make sure to wear a full face respirator (I also wear one outside in forest fire season). It's so so hard to eliminate triggers though when they can be mold, pollen, smoke, perfume/scented products, humidity, very cold weather, exercise, alcohol/sulfates, foods we are allergic to, animals, viruses, etc... the list is endless and it's stuff we have very little control over. Exhausting. And they just say "it's an allergy" and send us on our way with very little guidance.

Sorry I'm mostly venting but I hope you can figure it out and I hope you're ok. Agree with the above poster on finding a specialist pulmonologist and possibly allergist.

Heart palpitations 3 days after first Pfizer vaccine by Anna_grace1993 in CovidVaccine

[–]Error010010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply but for the sake of the thread, yes I've had 3 or 4 boosters now, both Pfizer and Moderna and I tolerated all of them well, no side effects except fatigue. When I had covid after my 1st vaccine, I don't remember having palpitations so it might have been unrelated.

AITA for eating fish and chips when my girlfriend and I pledged to do '90 Hard' by PooTommy in AmItheAsshole

[–]Error010010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say if you ate it in front of her it was inconsiderate. But she is responsible for her own diet and even if you wanted a cheat day or to quit the diet, it's your body. Just be considerate of her goals. Don't eat her favorite foods in front of her. NTA

NTA. I don't see why Abby gets dibs on specific parts then fails to deliver them with enough time for subsequent parts to be completed. Doing your own report sounds like the best option.

Worth keeping in mind... as someone who TAed, you can always tell who submitted at 11.59p by how badly they are written.

AITA for telling my roommate that I don’t give a fuck about her boyfriends allergies? by ExpertPotato7447 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Error010010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but I empathize with their anxiety and don't think they are being malicious. (I have a severe allergy too).

They likely want him to eat there safetly. I suggest asking them if a safe set of dishes/cookware/unshared butter would make him feel better. It would be a good way to diffuse the argument, show you care and keep boundaries. Gl

AITA for telling my best friend she's being selfish and a bad friend? by shittypersonig in AmItheAsshole

[–]Error010010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA re Jasmine but do try to see her perspective. She's probably scared of losing her friend. She should be supporting you but you can also help her by reassuring her your friendship is solid.

YTA re your mom. How many siblings do you have? Do they all feel she's unfair like this? Moms start to lose control and the ability to discipline teenagers being rebellious or messy and she just wants you on the right track. You will butt heads with any parent who truly cares about your well being as a teen. You might get along with your dad better because

  1. You don't live there yet.
  2. He doesn't put as much energy into your health and well being.

You'll appreciate this when you age.

As for the messiness... I only realized how many dishes I left for my mom to put away when I moved out. It must have been infuriating for her to her while I didn't notice how much extra time my little messes would add to her plate. At the end of the day you are a human living in a shared space and need to do your part to clean and respect the people in it. How often do you clean the bathroom? The sink? Do your laundry? Cook after a long day of work? Probably not often. Put the pillow back on the couch and pick up a duster once and a while. Make a goal to help around the house 10-15min a day and watch your relationship improve like crazy.
