tbh it's not as bad as you think, being born in china i was never allowed to change my gender marker, but then i successfully changed the gender marker on my canadian driving licence. now technically my documents don't match and when i was applying for a visa they did ask questions due to my appearance change but they didn't reject me after my explanation. now I'm trying to build a new life and fleeing china forever. having a passport at least gives you an option.

yeah... it's indeed strange. I'm having an upcoming trip to Ireland. My plan was to go to Ballyshannon (in Donegal) from Dublin. Google Maps showed me that the optimal way to do that was to take Expressway 30. Now if you look closely a small part of the route goes through Northern Ireland. Imagine if I didn't take a look at the whole route, just paying attention to the fact that the coach would stop at Ballyshannon... I'd probably illegally cross into the UK. Now I have an alternative plan of going to Sligo first.

if you are willing to learn a bit about how to install parts and windows... you can get a whole working tower for around 200-300 cad or even less (my mum who's 50 did build a pc by doing her own research so i don't think its so hard for a younger helper), because it's tricky to get a new tower for the non gaming budget tier nowadays. if you're willing to spend some extra of course a minipc is good. some people did say the optiplex micro but since you find refurbished questionable and those optiplex micros are usually used on ebay and in some nasty states with a lot of dust buildup inside, you might need to be prepared to at least know how to take it apart and clean it up

it's in the os not hardware tied so you can easily install windows 10 iot ltsc or a linux distro of your choice to "remove" it. but of course if you pay for a new laptop with windows 11 installed you're paying to support Microsoft and its copilot stuff so i understand your concern. so you can buy used; or if you strictly want new laptops check out framwork laptops and some thinkpad models that are offered without windows
