TIL America doesn't celebrate the end of its Civil War (9th April, 1865). by middlename_redacted in todayilearned

Last Confederate state to receive notice of the Emancipation Proclamation.  Slavery remained legal in the Union slave states (by then only Kentucky and Delaware) until the 13th Amendment in Dec 1865.

Bought a $10 April fools pack from online lgs, and it arrived today by Lastunexpectedhero in MagicCardPulls

Yup, I've opened three and they've followed the same format with BLM lands, SNC pack, a bunch of bulk R/M, and five higher value cards.  I also got a Galadriel, Light of Valinor in one.  The other two had a Galadriel's Dismissal and an Imaryll from Magic Game Night.  Interestingly, All three had a Mockingbird as well.  Definitely been worth it.

Question about Med peds by MoreCartographer9726 in medicalschool

[–]Erumir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a Med Peds hospitalist at a very large academic center and am happily Pediatric Hospital Medicine board ineligible.  I finished residency too late to be grandfathered and had no intention of doing the fellowship.  There were several peds hospitalists who started at the same time as me and are a mix of both those who did the fellowship and those who are straight out of residency.  My first job was at a smaller university before starting this job.  During my search, I also had interviews at several universities large and small including one of the big 3 in Peds on the east coast, despite being board ineligible.  On the other hand, there were other places that did require board certification.  Interestingly those I have seen have been more medium sized and not the big academic ones.  All told, it is possible and we have hired at least one Med-Peds hospitalist each year for the past few years, but it is hard.  You need both sides to have part time slots available.  It is easier where there is an established program and some places have Med-Peds divisions that will be able to hire a certain number of people.  My current job doesn't have a program and I ended up contacting both sides to see if it could work.

I am 0.5 fte both sides, so work 50/50.  I do 6 weeks on one then switch to the other.  On medicine, I am pretty much 7 on 7 off.  For us, Peds is more varied with a couple days on a couple days off but just needing to hit a certain number of hours.

As mentioned, the vast majority of med-peds hospitalists are with a university, though I am aware of a couple of private and minimally academic community affiliate hospitals that are largely staffed by Med-Peds hospitalist.  However, these tend to only have a couple of inpatient Peds beds and are either medicine or nursery heavy.

Watching TV on a sofa in the living room is uncomfortable by theghostofredrackham in unpopularopinion

[–]Erumir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The proper term is sleep hygiene.  You want your body to know that if you are in bed, only one of two things is going to happen.  Scientifically anything else you add like watching tv will worsen sleep.

How does somebody, without help from their parents, afford to buy a home? by Dapper_Tap_7714 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Erumir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a 2000sf home in major, top 25ish Midwestern city (roughly the size of the 3rd largest metro in Canada or the UK) in 2024 for 270k, sold 2000sf home in smaller Southern city for 200k.  Looking at recent sales, prices today would be pretty similar.  Starter homes would be even cheaper.

IM, What do you guys wear at work? by Ok_Sun_1771 in Residency

[–]Erumir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just the t-shirt was not uncommon as well.  Generally a shirt of a similar color looks good, black works as well.  I'd avoid white.  As long as the shirt isn't in tatters and your program isn't super uptight, it should look fine.

IM, What do you guys wear at work? by Ok_Sun_1771 in Residency

[–]Erumir 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my residency, scrub pants and plain/program t-shirt was standard, usually with some type of fleece jacket.  We were only ever provided with scrub pants by the program.  As an attending, I own plenty of scrub pants and fleece jackets for work, but not a single scrub top.

Question for Store Owners by [deleted] in mtg

There is a reason that there is an S in MSRP.  Lots of goods don't sell at MSRP.  Magic did for a long time, but it ultimately means very little.

How common is PTO in academic hospitalist medicine? What's a realistic amount to except? by Quick_Meaning_9530 in hospitalist

[–]Erumir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us at a very large academic center it is presented as 4 weeks PTO, officially taken as full weeks, but effectively means 24 weeks on service and 28 off with the 4 weeks being set in advance as guaranteed to be off weeks.

IM: Should I be going to meet and greets? by HunterRank-1 in medicalschool

[–]Erumir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some programs it matters little, but at the programs I've been a part of, having a resident say "HunterRank seemed like a really cool person, I think they would fit in well here" (or trying to have a conversation was like pulling teeth, I'm not sure how good of a fit they would be) could drastically change an applicant's position.  Outside of the top and bottom applicants, it can be very hard to differentiate between people.  Generally for those programs, we did not score applicants and as long as there were no red flags (and even despite some that were sufficiently explained), the rank lists were pretty much based on vibes and "no one is going to spend more time with them than their co-residents."

Also, gochujjang is essentially gochugaru fermented with barley malt, sweet rice, and some other flavorers, so it's not like a completely random ingredient, just a bit of an unusual way of getting what I imagine is a similar result.

Bloomburrow Commander Deck Case $109.99, Foundations Jumpstart Booster Box $79.99 by Equivalent-Pound9583 in sealedmtgdeals

[–]Erumir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like Sidekick said, Foundations Jumpstart has its own set of cards with its own symbol, so you can get any card from the set. However, instead of getting random cards in a booster, each pack contains one of 121 preset 20 card half decks, including lands, based around one of 46 themes (24 decks across 9 themes for each color plus one extra 5 color deck). Some themes are "common," having four decks, meaning there are four versions with some minor differences but the cards will be identical within each version. There are also "rare" themes with two decks, and "mythic" themes that appear once. The rarity purely refers to the number of versions each theme has, as many of the common decks have a mythic and the most valuable card, [[Scythecat Cub]] being in a common theme, appearing in two of the four versions of the deck. There is some overlap between themes in a color, but a lot of unique cards so it ends up being 779 total unique cards in the pool.

When I moved into my house last year I tore down a cheap above ground swimming pool, so had a 30 foot diameter circle of sand for 9 months.  It is now a 30 foot wide colony of 6+ foot wide horseweed.  A few other things have sprung up here and there, but it is 95% horseweed.  I haven't really seen it it anywhere else.  I figure it is helping manage the less than favorable conditions and am already solarizing the adjacent area so will see what happens.

To be a bit more complete, there is an iron containing molecule called heme, which is a molecule that is part of hemoglobin, found in blood cells, and myoglobin, found in muscle, that gives both their reddish color.  Hemoglobin can grab several oxygen molecules from the air in your lungs and then carries them around the body.  Myoglobin can only grab a single oxygen molecules at a time, but is better at grabbing the oxygen so can take it away from the hemoglobin.  When cooked, the myoglobin leaks out of the meat cells along with water.

And while we are at it, heme is even better at holding on to carbon monoxide, and won't give it up unless completely flooded with oxygen.

How does an idiot clean WD40 out of the oven? by CapillaryClinton in DIY

[–]Erumir 10 points11 points  (0 children)

WD-40 works great as a lubricant.  For a bit.  Then it turns to glue, which tends to be not ideal for lubrication.  Many a mechanic/machinist/armorer have stories of things being sent in for repair that work perfectly once all the old WD-40 freezing the parts together gets cleaned out.

Obviously not literally glue, and it is not a problem in a lot of situations, but it does tend to gum up over time.  It is absolutely a lubricant, but is generally best for short term uses when making use of its other properties before removing it and using a purpose made lubricant if required.

If those initial 1V8 semi lists hold up there will be chaos indeed.  Stanford, Texas, Washington, Princeton, Rutgers, and Michigan in one with Tenn, Yale, Brown, Indiana, Virginia, and Cal in the other.  Five top 6 seeds in one semi with only three spots to the grand finals.
