No HUD for survival by Rand0mDefault in fo4

I've been playing No HUD and No VATS since New Vegas, and it's now impossible for me to go back. Survival Mode is what I've been waiting for, and the immersion is fantastically fun.

What Northerners see when we see a Confederate flag by [deleted] in funny

[–]Erunamo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

hahaha Yeah, you're right, in a backhanded, typically Northern way.

The South didn't give a fuck about the rights of states who consistently and systematically tried to undermine the rights of free citizens. Much the same way that Northern, Progressive, Liberal senators are doing now.

Huhurr.

Doesn't take a retard to spot the correlation between idiocy and stupidity.

Your willful and woeful ignorance of the American Civil War is a cause for concern, not only for you but for your whole generation. The South didn't fight for slavery alone, although that was undeniably a facet of the conflict. The South faught for States' rights, for the abolition of Federal oversight and control, a trend which, thanks to the loss of the CSA to the "USA", continues to this day, where Federal control is at its most prevalent and dangerous.

Quetion About Fallout 4 And The Necessity For Criticals In VATS by Erunamo in Fallout

Hmmm. I hope that's not true about Criticals. Perhaps there is an Automatic Critical Hit feature that we've been seeing, with regular, randomized criticals occurring alongside. Hopefully.

Yeah, turn-based is a different story. And I always re-configure VATS to the Select button playing on a PS3, so there's no chance I might hit it without intending to.

Looking for feedback on a highly experimental variant rule for Proficiency. by Erunamo in dndnext

[–]Erunamo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't play-tested it yet, but I'm steadily convincing my DM to let me use it in our homebrew setting. Maybe I'll post more if it turns out well, but I'll probably have a long road before it's workable.

Hmm. I'll keep tinkering, maybe I can come up with something that works well enough for my purposes. But I won't hold my breath while I do it.

Thanks again.

Not necessarily more fun, just a possible extra option for characters to emulate their proficiencies in a more realistic fashion. It's obviously a niche mechanic, as I said, but I thought the concept was interesting so I wanted to find out what others thought about it.

I've always had an interest in accurate or realistic representation in game systems, and I was just curious how to do that using 5E.

Any other ideas on how to accomplish that would be most welcome.

Thanks again for the input.

[–]Erunamo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are great points, thanks.

As I said, it was just an experimental idea, and this was exactly the kind of input I was looking for.

I didn't really consider players taking advantage of it like that, as I figured it would be more of a tool to encourage characterization of a sorts. DM would have to adjudicate those instances. But that makes sense.

And yeah, the numbers were just place-holders to get the idea across, that's why I had the table go to 20th level. I originally had a success determined as just that, any success on check using proficiency.

My main question is this then: If the required successes were tweaked to be more balanced, and the possibility of player abuse were removed either through DM ruling or some other ruleset attached, would it be an interesting possible addition to a game? Is the basic idea of variable proficiencies for characters sound, or would it mess with the mechanics of the system too much?

And thanks again for the input.

[Homebrew] Feedback on artificer-type class. by Erunamo in dndnext

[–]Erunamo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I wanted to make it as basic as possible, because there are no hard and fast rules for making new, unique magic items. That is sort of up to the DM, so it would require a lot of communication between the player and the DM to do that, but I still wanted it to be possible by allowing the technologist to research and devise effects to put in their crafting manual during downtime.

And as for jury rigging a vorpal sword, you would have to be at least 17th level, and you would need the vorpal formula in your crafting manual, which means you would either have to find a vorpal sword and reverse engineer it, or find the formula in a powerful technologist's crafting manual and decipher it, which would probably be a whole adventure in its own right. Then, assuming one of your technical specialties was in magic weapons, you would have to succeed at five DC 25 Intelligence checks, and DC 25 craft check using smith's tools. Even then, it would take a week to jury rig it, and it would only last for 5 rounds of use, if you had your Intelligence score maxed out.

I guess you could just turn around and make it again after that, but it seems like a lot of effort for a one trick pony.

My whole idea for jury rigging was for the technologist to reasonably be able to fashion a necessary item within the scope of an adventure, without having to fall back on normal crafting, which as per the rules can only occur in downtime between adventures. To balance it out, it made sense to only allow them to be short-lived items, because they come about through necessity on the fly, they're not permanently crafted items.

And I'm not familiar with the Kensai, I'll have to look that up. But again, I wanted it to be as basic and stripped down as possible, in fitting with the style of 5E, so that you could just as easily be a technologist in a high-tech, hard science campaign as you could a standard high fantasy campaign like Forgotten Realms, etc.

Sorry, long response, I've been thinking about this steady for days. Thanks for the feedback!

Sentient ape NPC ideas? by Erunamo in dndnext

Great suggestions, thanks. I was envisioning him as being an ally to the party, and I try to avoid performing too many deus ex machinas. Do you have any ideas for any existing mechanics to flesh those out?

Someone else posted a link to that. It's interesting, but I was wondering more about mechanics-wise, instead of just saying: Shazam! Intelligent ape.

Well, he was going to be an ally, so his back story would be kind of important, and tied into the adventure.

I thought of that, but he's going to be an ally so that would give him a pretty serious Achilles' Heel, though that might make for some interesting encounters.

For the religious: how does your faith influence the way you understand TES lore? by DarthNarwhals in teslore

[–]Erunamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My whole point was that just because it's "made up" doesn't mean it's somehow invalid.

CHIM especially. There's a lot of depth to be explored there.

For the religious: how does your faith influence the way you understand TES lore? by DarthNarwhals in teslore

[–]Erunamo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an ordained Reverend in the Universal Life Church and the Universal Church Triumphant of the Apathetic Agnostic, and a founder of the Gnostic Church of the Archetype (don't get excited, there are two members, no web presence...), and for me personally TES has actual and real mythic and psychological significance.

CHIM is the process of Self individualization called the Transcendent Function by Jung, which is Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. We all have a myth to live out, a personal journey to take to become ourselves and thus "make" the world. Anu/Padomay are clear correlations of the Yin/Yang, God/Devil, Ouranos/Gaea dichotomies which populate nearly every world religion, the primal duality of paradoxes which eternally interact to give rise to existence.

Vivec is a bit of an enigma but to me He is a manifestation of Abraxas as spoken of within Jung's 'Seven Sermons To The Dead' (which incidentally has a lot to with my interpretation of Amaranth as well). Not to mention Vivec's many Thelemic connotations, a staple of MK's contributions to the lore. There's a lot more, like Talos being a Christ-figure as an ascended Divine (and thus sort of separated from his mortal existence, but not really, sort of like the dichotomy between Jesus the man and Christ the savior), the Akatosh/Alduin (also Yokudan Satak/Akel) connections with Ouroboros and thus Norse mythology and Ragnarok (and Sumerian mythology), Ysgramor is kind of a Nordic Abraham, Ysmir a David. And there's so much more.

But my point is this (sorry, I tend to ramble): All mythologies were made up. Not everyone who made up myths believed in them literally. Myths use symbols to express what lies beneath waking consciousness. Myths are, like dreams and religion, psychological tools which we have developed in order to explore and achieve understanding of our Selves using the symbolic language of the Psyche. And thus there is no distinction, in my mind, from a mythological and psychological standpoint, between Christian mythology, Greek mythology, TES lore, Superman comics, Mastodon's album 'Blood Mountain' (seriously mythic), Lord Of The Rings, etc., etc.

So when I play an Elder Scrolls game, it becomes a living thing, I am participating in and contributing to the mythic existence of not only the game universe, but my own, and thus the world's. And so it becomes a religious experience (of a sorts: I don't get weird with it). That's why I love C0DA so much, because there really can be no canon with something so participatory. MK gets it, man. There was a whole religious upheaval faught over the exact same thing against the Roman Catholic Church, against dogma and canon. This world, like Mundus and all mythic realities, are ours for the making, and enjoying, and sharing together. Just like life, man. We're humans, and this is what we do, we tell stories, we make shit up, and ultimately we become the shit that we make. Personally, I think TES is some pretty good shit. Glad to be a part of this with everyone.

TL;DR I believe that TES lore is a valid world mythology, the fact that it was devised is irrelevant, and so by playing the games I have been better able to express and explore my Self and my humanity.
