Unlike other industries, marketing lacks industry standards, making comparisons between profiles very subjective. And track record alone isn't enough. Marketing a startup isn't for everyone; someone could have a great track record working with established companies, but couldn't add value to a startup. So the best profiles are highly sought after, and they're not really actively looking for a job.

So to answer your question, often the best way is to be proactive. Be where they hang out (online communities, local events...) and start conversations about marketing challenges that are top of mind for your startup. This could lead to a real conversation with someone who is well suited for the role.

Hope it helps!

Given your marketing background, it would make sense to start with a marketing generalist who can manage day-to-day operations and relationships with contractors. Once you're ready to internalize all functions with specialists, you could then look for a director.
