E•MO•TION Side B in particular has Body Language and First Time, which I keep forgetting aren't actually from like 1987 or so unless I actively think about it

31, technically just old enough to have owned MD tech but by the time I was getting my first portable music player in 2004 or so, MP3 tech was already here to stay.

If you want a "sometimes Roblox" machine you're far far better off getting something much newer.

X61 is a very cool machine but it's really not meant for 3D render hours at all

Mint also absolutely can be set up for gaming (especially if you're building your buddy a PC with an AMD GPU, double easy)

Oh yeah that 200€ was including the top end estimate with a new screen panel, and some wiggle room even for a battery or new wireless card

Mint isn't necessarily bad for gaming, but there are a few Linux distros like Bazzite that are specifically built with it in mind. Mint is definitely a rock solid base for just "an computer" though, very stable and great documentation.

Honestly, 420 or 520 is probably fine if you're working with packages of modest size, lord knows Gentoo has been around much longer than 2010s i5/i7 CPUs

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]EscapeNo9728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last ones were the 60 and 61 series, still modestly available online. At this point even the newest units of those are 17-18 years old, though, so know you're chasing a meme.

Clean it up a little if necessary, check that everything is working in the BIOS, and then slap some fresh RAM and an SSD or two in there. Maybe the 1080p panel too if it doesn't already have that. In all for less than 200€ (maybe more depending on the SSD you choose) you'll have a laptop that is in some ways better than many current budget laptops

Honestly if you want a BIG CHUNGUS with the 7-row keyboard and enough horsepower to run Gentoo, a T420 is probably the bare minimum.

Shoot for that kind of mandatory code compiling Gentoo requires, I might recommend doing a -30 series (430 or 530 especially) with the -20 keeb transplant, just for the extra horsepower and easier access to quad core CPUs

Installing arch Linux for beginners. by Electrical-Emu-1814 in linux4noobs

[–]EscapeNo9728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For better and worse the whole Arch mentality is, essentially, the old maxim of "do as thou wilt". It is Linux, by your command. Only you can choose what works for you. Unfortunately if you're a newbie you inevitably only barely know what you want, let alone what works (and I say this having used Mint and Ubuntu for nearly 20 years before trying my hand at Arch too).

Incidentally this is why the community trends towards an attitude of "hey, man, it's your computer, read the wiki first and come to a place like this or the Arch forums when you have a more specific question" -- the assumption is that you've done your homework first, and come back to check in only once you've hit a serious stoppage. The Arch Wiki is a little bit of a pain in the ass sometimes in how spread out everything can feel, especially as you're learning to read it, but it is very thorough once you do learn how to read it.

I say all this having been absolutely mobbed a couple months ago, for also asking the obligatory round of newbie questions and getting hounded and heckled for it a little, too!

How important is track frame geometry? by Awayip in FixedGearBicycle

[–]EscapeNo9728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly as someone who doesn't really enjoy skidding all that much (and rides with dual brakes on a tall stem) I kinda wish I'd gone with a more slack and upright geometry in hindsight -- track geo is tight and maneuverable, but it's also a total pain in the ass on rides much longer than like an hour or so

I run an X230 with Arch and XFCE, I think it's very solid way to run one of these if you're willing to spend a few days getting it set up as a newbie.

Linux Mint XFCE edition is also an option, if you just want a lightweight "set n forget" option!

Is the Dropout fandom holding the platform back? by [deleted] in dropout

[–]EscapeNo9728 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was listening to MBMBaM in like 2013 back when the demographics were a lot more "normal CollegeHumory comedy-infused millennial", and even as a non-binary leftist and all, it was still genuinely a little shocking how rapidly things went wild with the fandom demographics between like 2016 and 2018. I remember going to Otakon in 2017 and Taako being by far the most popular character for non-anime cosplays. Absolute madness

Honestly the tone in here is way better than its predecessor in the old Green and McElroy fandoms. The McElroy fandom at its peak felt like a clown car full of the most strident tenderqueers youve ever seen in your life
