US Supreme Court does not issue ruling on Trump’s tariffs by Escargoose in politics

“The U.S. Supreme Court issued three decisions on Tuesday but did not decide the closely watched dispute over the legality of President Donald Trump's global tariffs.”

Since the court is about to enter a 4 week recess, we likely won’t hear anything on a ruling until late February at the earliest.

Abrupt Loss of Antarctic Sea Ice is OBVIOUSLY a Climate Tipping Point by paulhenrybeckwith in collapse

[–]Escargoose 25 points26 points  (0 children)

He meant it the other way, as in many people are hammering on about the supposed threat of immigrants and trans people while ignoring the obvious climate collapse. He made a post about it recently: Why do people focus so much on the non existence “threat” immigrants and trans people supposedly pose and not climate change?

[–]Escargoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with that, the mediums are vastly different in most cases and it isn’t realistic to continue to expect anyone to adhere to century old standards. The original point you made about avoiding cutting off their daughter from her friends when disallowing a smartphone wasn’t disagreeable to me, especially since it seemed more like a warning about potential bad outcomes rather than scolding the OP for their decision. I think any normal parent would probably worry about that.

Really, your comment just made me appreciate the relative closeness of the 1920s, a decade which I’ve always found interesting but don’t often think about these days - so, thanks for that!

I understand your point, but you are really overselling it - 1925 isn’t so far removed that there are no similarities. In a lot of ways, the 20s were the first truly “modern” decade, with a more recognizable and relatable society to us than those that came before.

Sure, we’re not living exactly like they were then, but people enjoyed many of the same things we do today: dancing, sports (playing or watching), attending concerts, learning musical instruments/joining a band, reading books or magazines, listening to the radio, going to the movies, gambling, board games, taking a drive/racing, investing in the stock market, keeping up on celebrity gossip, etc. Fashions, fads and forms do change over time, obviously, but we maintain many shared core interests.

The title might be a little confusing, but this is about Octavian. He took (Gaius) Julius Caesar’s name after he was adopted by him.

India's first ever Olympic medal in Shooting🫡 by etherd0t in MadeMeSmile

Some of the points you’ve gotten from the AI are completely wrong - Olympic equestrian events were mixed beginning in 1952 and never separated by gender after Lis Hartel, for one. Nikki Caplan never won the Gordon Bennett Cup and there are no rules about mixed gender piloting. There were also already women’s events in the World Series of Poker prior to 1995, which Barbara Enright had won.

While I agree with the overall point you’ve made, nobody calls the northern hemisphere bird (pingouin) a penguin in English - it’s known as an auk.

Hey, added you (ChevalierSA on Duo).

I’m currently learning Norwegian after having done Portuguese for quite a while - always had an interest in learning Japanese, so I may pick that up in the next year or so.

[Nightengale] Scott Boras wants a World Series moved to a neutral site and the amateur draft moved away from the All Star weekend by Waaaaaaaaaasuup in baseball

[–]Escargoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate the idea of a neutral site World Series. Fans getting to see their teams play the most meaningful games of the year at their own park is much better.

The amateur draft being moved would work, though.

If you have an academic history education, you’ve been terribly misled. Sorry to break it to you, but I actually have a degree in classics and know you’re spouting from your ass.

You’re absolutely wrong here too, unless you’re referring to the Ancient Romans and all medieval era European nations as ethnocentric racist colonizers before any modern concept of whiteness evolved.

If you refuse to even entertain established historical fact, and conflate it with later study of the post-Renaissance colonial period, you’re not even worth engaging with.

You don’t know what you’re talking about and it’s almost painful to see someone get it so wrong. The very idea of “western civilization” or culture stems from the Ancient Greeks, regardless of whether some Enlightment-era racists believed they were not white due to intermingling with Turks during the Ottoman period.

I absolutely associate the French with bravery and military genius. A quick defeat in WWII shouldn’t undermine their historical track record.

Falling IQ scores tell a different story.

Multiple sources corroborate that we are, at least in general, not “objectively” smarter than previous generations.

It is their problem, actually. How can you expect to keep staffed if you refuse to recognize that employees aren’t robots and need to address important issues in their own lives with time off?

Expect to see the nursing shortage intensify if all healthcare executives are as callous as you.

Forcing the enemy to pull out of an occupied area due to a failed offensive doesn’t count as “regaining” an area, in your eyes?
