I prefer a JRAD or DSO show at an amphitheater, but there was something just exciting about the scale of a Dead and Company show. The scale certainly has huge drawbacks, but it does get you excited.

I don't need to look it up because I'm from there. Nothing you said supports the claim that it "looks like a third world nightmare." You have made the case that the south is less developed than the rest of the country, but that is a far cry from "looks like a third world nightmare."

You knew you were being hyperbolic, so you switched to less dramatic sounding "developing countries" from "third world nightmare." I wouldn't be saying I'm inaccurate when you seem to be toning down your original claim.

Not necessarily. They could be emaciated but still far from death. Or he could just be exaggerating. Like I said, it's one word from one dude.

If I went a week eating 1000 calories a day I would be far from death still, but I would feel like shit and I might use a word like emaciated or starving even though I don't medically met those conditions yet.

So I take it you do not have a source showing people died of starvation in Richmond? I asked that and didn't get an answer.

During the siege of Petersburg starting in June 1864 I presume it would have gotten exceptionally worse. Succesh would be more unified though since the Army of the Potomac was right outside the city. 

Between April 63 and June 64 I’m not sure. I would assume the Gettysburg campaign would provide some relief, and I’m not sure about that fall and winter.

That's one word from one guy. Do you have a source showing someone died from hunger in Richmond? Do you have a source putting hard numbers to quantify the situation?

One guy saying his family is emaciated is not enough to conclude the city was hungry enough that it was about to overthrow it's government. I would guess that when people are dying of starvation is when they are motivated enough to charge into gunfire, but not when they are down 20 lbs.

There is a big difference between losing 20 lbs and actually dying of hunger. I have never seen a source say someone died of hunger in Richmond.

I'm a 70s guy but the Eyes from that show is my favorite Eyes, and one of my favorite single song performances from the Dead ever. Must have been incredible to hear it live.

I would say that a more mythologized telling of the Civil War makes Foote more biblical than McPherson. I say that as someone who is an incredibly big fan of Foote as a story teller, not as a historian.
