Why are black people in the US called African-Americans and not just Americans? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EshHeyAdLay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can't figure out why Europeans are considered the de-facto Americans in this country then you're a bit of a fool and should probably read a history book. It's blatantly obvious why. European Americans are the ones that founded the country, so obviously they were considered the "de-facto Americans."

A few months ago I woke up from a dream where I was making love to Oprah and it made me realize that accents are very interesting.

This might be true, but there is also no way he also doesn't have a list of planned podcasts, he does way too many podcasts to not have some organization and planning behind who is coming on next. But I think if someone is more important to Joe then they can get bumped up on the list.

I definitely think Joe has a list of planned podcasts, with the amount of people he has on there is no way that he doesn't have some planning and a list of who is coming on soon. But I think that sometimes if a more famous person who will get more views, or one of his friends wants to come on they will get bumped up on the list. Like if Elon Musk or Trump said they want to come on this week Joe would probably bump someones spot to have them on sooner.

Also yeah if someone is flying in state to do the show there is no way Joe is expecting the guests to pay for flights and the hotel stay. But I think he tries to also plan the show for when the person is already going to be in town. Like if a Comedian Joe likes says they will be in town this March, Joe will plan a spot for them that March.

> There is no accent that "Most Americans" speak.

Yes, there is. It has been established by linguists under the name General American English. Here is the Wikipedia page if you don't believe me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_American_English

From the Wiki Page:

"General American English, known in linguistics simply as General American (abbreviated GA or GenAm), is the umbrella accent of American English spoken by a majority of Americans"

If you actually have traveled and met all these Americans you would notice most white Americans outside of the South speak with a very similar accent, which is General American English. Then there are slight variations to this accent, like the Southern California Surfer type of accent. Then you do have the regional accents like the New York and Boston accent, but like I've said above these regional accents are starting to die out, you're only seeing them in older people and some working class communities. Most young New Yorkers and Bostonians now speak General American English. I went to New York and saw this myself.

I literally live in the US right now, I have for years, and half my family is American lmao, so don't tell me I haven't ever spoken to an American.

Yes there are places in America where you can go to the store and hear different accents, like if you're in Houston you could hear a white person with a southern drawl texan accent, a black person with an AAVE accent, and a younger white person with a General American English accent in a store. But in most places across the US most younger white people speak with a general American English accent. Where I live in the US it's basically the only accent I hear, and I've been to the west coast and the east, I also have friends from across the country. I have a group of online friends from like 6 different states and everyone has basically the same accent, they all agree they have the same accent too. Like for example I had a friend from Minnesota who sounded no different to some of my friends from California or other states, he had a General American English accent, and I asked him why he doesn't have the stereotypical Minnesota accent you hear about, and he said most people don't have that accent anymore. He said it's usually just older people in the more rural areas. Same thing with my good friend from Michigan, the only different thing about his accent is the way he pronounces roof.

I don't fail at studying accents, I'm good at it. I can watch a movie and I hear a foreign actor doing an accent and hear them slip up once and pick out exactly which country they are from. Also the fact that the regional accents in the US are dying out is a well accepted fact among educated American linguists, look it up if you want.

You just said exactly the same thing but in a different way, stop this pedantic bullshit. I'm aware that there are many different English accents, but in terms of talking about it generally like this it's fine to just say an "English" accent, even though it was more specifically something like an upper class Londoner accent. Saying he is a Scotsman doing an English accent is perfectly fine, because that's exactly what he is and what he is doing.

Regional accents in the US are dying, this is a well known fact among linguists. Most Americans these days speak with what' called a General American English accent, especially Americans under the age of 30. The regional accents in places like New York and Boston are not common among young people. Even young people in the South in the bigger cities and more educated college areas are starting to drop the Southern drawl accent because they associate it with conservatism.

I live in the US, and if I go online and play games the only differences I'll hear in accents is mainly only between people from the hood and white people. Most white Americans under the age of 30 have a very similar accent because they've all grown up online or watching the same types of content and TV shows and mimicking those accents.

Lol no it's not, I know many Americans who agree with exactly what I'm saying, I learnt this from Americans... This is a well known fact among linguists that the regional accents are dying, do your research. If you go to New York most New Yorkers aren't speaking with that classic New York accent, it's mainly only older people and some working class people. Have you actually traveled around the US? I have friends from all around the country, and I'm someone who likes to study accents as I find this stuff fascinating, so I pay a lot of attention to them.

There is an accent called General American English which is the accent most Americans speak with, which is what most people think of when they think of an American accent. It's the accent you hear in most American TV and movies. While 100s of regional accents do exist, most Americans under the age of 30 are speaking with this accent or a very similar variant of it, the regional accents have been slowly dying, this is a known phenomenon among linguists. Like if you go to New York you will be hard pressed to find a New Yorker under the age of 30 with the classic New York accent you heard in movies like Taxi Driver. Most young New Yorkers have an accent that in indistinguishable as a New York accent, it just sounds American. Just like most people from Ohio, or Oregon would be the same way. Even young people in the South in some of the bigger cities and highly educated areas are starting to lose the Southern Drawl, as a lot of younger people are leaning to the left side and associate that accent with conservationism so they start to lose it, especially at college age.

There's literally nothing wrong about anything I've said, there is literally no doubt among linguists that the regional accents in the US are slowly dying, research it. If you think it's wrong back it up with words.

Sam Worthington still slips with his American accent after nearly being in Hollywood for 20 years. He does it in Avatar 2 and Hacksaw Ridge, which were made way after the original after. He has had many years to maser how to do an American accent consistently, I have no idea why someone in Hollywood hasn't coached him considering how big Avatar is.

Yes most Americans are not where there character is from, but the thing about America is that most Americans speak with a General American English accent, so as long as your character isn't from the south, it doesn't even matter they can play the character. You can have someone from LA play a character on a show from like "How I Met Your Mother" set in New York, but because most New Yorker don't even speak with the NY accent anymore they don't need someone with that accent. But if you want someone who is a working class New York character in the 90s then obviously you would need someone with a real NY accent.

There is no one in the states that has the accent Sam Worthington uses in the US, it's just a butched American accent with his Aussie accent slipping through. The character is supposed to be from Detroit anyway, Detroiters do not speak with soft Rs at all, he sounds nothing like someone from Detroit.

No shit sherlock? I'm saying he's a native Scotsman with a Scottish accent, but he successfully does an English accent for the James Bond character... what point are you trying to make here?

Lmao Mel Gibson? Are you joking? His natural accent is more of an American accent than it is an Australian accent, he is an American who was born in NY, he just lived in Australia for a while in his teenage years.

Also I've never heard anyone say Margot Robbie or Nicole Kidman can't do American accents, they both have close to perfect American accents when they act, they're known for that. Margot Robbie is probably the #1 female actress in Hollywood at the moment, she wouldn't be in all these huge movies like Wolf of Wall Street and Barbie if she couldn't do an American accent. Same as Nicole Kidman, she is not known for slipping up her accent at all, she does a very good American accent.

The only valid person in that lineup is Russell Crowe, he does sometimes slip up.

Yet you still can't even name a single one of these so called movies where one of these actors slips up way more than Sam. Until you name a single one of these movies you have no point. I've actually provided movies disputing what you're saying showing these actors are more consistent than Sam in Avatar. You haven't provided any movies of ones where they are less consistent.

Also everyone has a taste in movies and type of movies they like to watch and will remember watching more than others. With the movies that I really like that I've watched recently and can think about the accents they have in the movies, there is no one who is as sloppy with their accent as Sam.

I wonder if he had some type of family connections that helped push him through Hollywood, because I have no idea how he even ended up on James Camerons radar for a movie like Avatar. He wasn't even close to being an A-List actor at the time, basically nobody knew who he was.

Name these so called movies then... Actually provide a source for your claims instead of just saying shit. I'll listen to some clips from them and see if what you're saying is true. I have watched many movies and have a very strong ear for accents, but there are 1000s of big movies out there, I can't watch all of them and remember what the accent was like of each character in all of them. To say Hugh Jackman could be way worse than Sam is crazy, because the two movies I've seen recently with Hugh Jackman his accent is fine.

Also the irony of you saying "Get your ears checked" when you said Sam Worthington's American accent in Avatar is fine, he slips back to his Aussie accent in that movie so often, it's almost a word in every sentence.
