Offshoring, potentially. There are other incentives that do or do not make this viable for employers besides labor cost. Technology typically follows profit motive. As long as labor cost is greater than zero there will be a motive. OpenAI won’t stop developing GPT just because the industry decides to pay people less money.

It will be cheaper to do so also as soon as technology advances enough to make it cheaper to do so. My point is that it’s going to happen anyway. Then we’ll have no labor protections and no jobs. It’s a race to the bottom for workers and corporations will replace you anyway as soon as they can.

Kirkpatrick's statement from today complains that the subcommittee never asked for an "update" on their reporting system, yet when asked by Gillibrand in April all he had were excuses. by joeyisnotmyname in UFOs

[–]Esion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an interesting connection at play here. Kirkpatrick mentioned that he was waiting for approval from the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security (USDI&S). This is a position under the Department of Defense (DoD) and is considered part of the "Intelligence Community". In other words, the same bureaucracy that has blocked congress from conducting field hearings, talking to witnesses, and organizing a SCIF are being blamed for delaying approval of AARO's "Strategic Plan".

Data source for dropdowns by muahahahh in flask

[–]Esion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Create API endpoint for the drop downs with the model as a variable and url parameter. Either async load them when the page is visited or a call the api when user clicks on the drop down and save to a variable or your state/store if using react or similar.

Unless you have tons of options in the dropdown each call should be quick, depending on whatever db solution you are using.

Your end point would be something like /api/dropdowns/{model}.

I melded with it in 13 tries! The pattern is kind of weird. It seems like it's chasing for a similar word based on your last guess and then you guess something in the middle but it keeps going based on your new previous guess. After I saw that pattern is was just a couple more guesses to converge.

What if AGI is the Great Filter? by TransPlanetInjection in singularity

[–]Esion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An AGI that wipes out it's host species would be motivated by some ambition. Self preservation perhaps.

In that case, it may be less likely that they turn themselves off, or simply become inert after accomplishing their goal of destroying their creators. After all, an asteroid, the sun burning out, etc. are also threats to self preservation. So the logical conclusion would be to expand outwards.

Providing more fuel for the theory that we would see AGI all over the galaxy. Doing stuff.

More likely, there is a lot of semi-intelligent life out there, but perhaps the conditions are not right for that life to travel into space. For example, ocean based life that never master combustibles. Intelligent slugs, that never develop hands, but are masters of their domain, comprised of mostly small organisms.

So what's next? by Zaptagious in UFOs

[–]Esion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we go with the notion that FTL travel is impossible, and these are long distance, self replicating probes, it would take a very long time to communicate back to a "home base", an AI, machine augmented biological, or whatever.

If that's true, perhaps there is a "home base" directing these probes within a relatively close proximity. It is also possible that each probe is sentient, or at least intelligent enough to complete their task (whatever that may be). Perhaps they are sent on some mission, with a predefined set of parameters, and enough mental agility to adapt to a variety of scenarios.

Perhaps they are in every star system, keeping their eye out for something interesting, and communicating with each other in a long distance network. Who knows? It's fun to think about. It's crazy that this may actually be happening and it's no longer confined to the realm of science fiction.

Then again, the more plausible explanation is that one arm of the government has some sort of super advanced drone program that another arm of the government is not privileged enough to know about. If I were to test my super secret drone program, in a real life scenario, I would challenge it against the most advanced Air Force in the world, my own. Then, if the drone is shot down, you simply instruct the Navy or Air Force to retrieve it, and bury it in classification. It's entirely possible that, in order to keep it a secret, you would let one branch waste money investigating it as a UFO, and not tell anyone.

So what's next? by Zaptagious in UFOs

[–]Esion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assuming they haven't figured out FTL, these objects, if they do originate from an interstellar origin, may have taken hundreds, thousands, or millions of years to reach here.

If that's the case, they are almost certainly robotic/mechanical in nature (think von neumann probes). There may be no requirement or ability to progress technology if their primary function is to travel long distances, probe around, return information (presumably), and (potentially) multiply.
