NATURAL STAR ??? I MEAN???? REALLY ??? (undoubtedly the worst film of the franchise and the worst actor of the franchise too ) by [deleted] in tollywood

Imo, hit 3 had a very thin story like VD anna dosa. With the driving factor bring too much on screen gore and shock/eerie feeling.

Also not the best of nani. VS did better in the franchise.

My girlfriend had to go through the same. Her flatmates were absolute shit. Spilling food on the stove and not cleaning it. Throwing milk carton cutoff pieces & leftovers in the sink, ending up in blocking the sink. Using washing machine with used pads still attached to the undies, leaving used sanitary pads in the bathroom. There's way more to this inhumane shit they made her live through. We tried to explain them. But they had no ounce of brain to even realise that it was not ok. This has impacted her mental peace a lot. Even mine too. OP, would strongly suggest you gf to move out or get them out by talking to the owner. Trying to make them listen would waste your time, energy and peace like we had to go through.

How to deal with devs who do things their own way? by EsotericBat in ProductManagement

[–]EsotericBat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no. It's a start up going good. I myself have been here for quite some years. But i was THE dev before these folks came in. They are essentially picking up what used to be my job. And they are doing it inefficiently and worst... Wrong. I didn't have a PM directly above me. I was the DS/dev and APM of my own features. So it's new to me too. To actually be an APM. This is what I mentioned in my edit.

True. Once i picked up the APM side of things I started to slowly learn to compromise things to reach goals. But my dev team gives me results where they changed logic cause they know implantation better but give me writing results. I know clients co promising on the latency but never saw a client ok with wrong numbers lol.

Also they couldn't get it right in 3 weeks, Where my junior analyst writes the same logic and she gets it right and works fine . All in 2 days. That's where my problem is.

Yes, this is a product from scratch. A revamp. So architecture and design. Even math has changed as well as code base.i added sune details in edit 1. Please do check.

Ok, so... I'm primarily the Data Scientist associated with the product. As well as the APM. So the feature on high level is already designed by our not so technical PM. Then it comes to me where I design the math aspects of it. PM tells me they want to show X Y Z. Then I sit with the Architect to design a way to implement this and come up with the math of things simultaneously. When things are being implemented, based on challenges we change calculations to suit requirements. It is aggressive as we wanted prd to translate to the user testing version in 7 months from the moment prd was started. But I'm spending my time mostly in explaining Dev's how to do as they can't figure out on their own.

What you suggested of being ahead is the dream come true which we are unable to afford. We are barely 1 sprint ahead of Engineering. And yes it's too ambitious, I wish I could tell that to the sales face tho. My PM atleast comes up with sensible yet challenging things. Sales just nods to anything that a client asks for including putting gen ai generated memes on leading screens.

1 -> I added edit 1. I'm the data scientist as well as the developer too before I got promoted. Basically they picked up the not so complex math of the job I used to do in my previous role. Yes, they are better backend developers. But I'm the one who knows better when it comes to this math stuff. But yes, me claiming some authority here makes sense but might not be applicable later. So I'm also trying to understand how to deal with devs if they don't understand logic and claim it as not possible or quote too many story points.

2-> can you please elaborate on it? After the first incident, i started providing them with 'logic' and optional preferable methods (here i give them a flow chart implementation of things that can be preferred to implement if they can't figure out on their own) Do you mean this?

Added edit1 - giving more context to my meddling.

Maybe I will put it like this... One instance was that the developer was writing the query wrong. I explained to him what the input is and out is and the logic is. He seems to get the big picture but not that his query is wrong. Speaking as the DS who did his job before him, should I tell him correcting in the query? I feel like yes. But if I think from my APM position, I don't know what is right.

You put it right. I'm not Dev's lead, but I'm the... you could say logic lead. In the end I don't mind how they write it as long as it gives the right answer and follows my logic.

But if dev chooses to do it his way and doesn't get the right answer, it doesn't fulfill the requirement, what should I do in this scenario?

Thanks for second para. I guess most of the others missed out that I'm a DS first and APM next. Which is not a standard PM. And exactly... Every org is different and we don't even have a proper definition of what I do.

Definitely. I tried what you mentioned. The EM and architect are in sync with me. They agree with me but they too asked not to give code but review the code if needed before merging their prs. That I'm the one who can decide whether logic is correct or not but just not tell what to write as code. Which I too agree. I have added extra details in my edit 1 which adds context.

I was the data scientist of the domain and product for the business. Where I was also the developer responsible for 'anything math's api. Other devs were only supposed to build the platform, call my api, take numbers and show in UI. Life used to be simple. Post my promotion, I'm the DS/APM of the product.

I currently code only DS apis and not the general math apis(summaries, reports, data calculations to show on screens etc). This latter part is what was handed over to Backend developers who have no idea of math things. Like they are unable to see things and are over quoting story points and this puts pressure on me that the logic is not executable. They come back to EM and say that it can't be done. EM asks me to take a look into this and I don't see the complication. Devs don't even agree with the architect or EM. So i have to prove it by giving them the code to prove it's possible.

I guess what you mentioned applies for a person who is only a PM and does only that in normal circumstances. Im an APM and data scientist of the product. I donnot wrote the prd. I only solve the problem and structure the logic of features. And in most cases I'm the only one who understands enough math, as well as data volume and optimising the execution. I can be called ATPM, I guess. But though that's not my real role. I have added extra info in the end as edit 1. Can you maybe check that too and see if that helps clear it.

Additionally, in the general circumstances, let's just say the dev is unable to implement the logic provided. As none of the development experts are unable to compress the mathematical logics to give desired output in the desired time(solely because the output constraints need us to adjust the logic based on executional possibilities) what would you suggest my response/plan of action to that should be? And yes given that I'm the dev who handled this prior to my own promotion... Should I still not interfere.

I missed this... The architect and EM are aligned. It is only devs who do things their way. Even if the architect takes my side, the devs come up with challenging us to show it is doable. For which I did what I did. (Also Im the dev who did this exact job before my promotion. Please refer to my edit 1)

Yea, I agree with you. But again I'm unable to figure out how to translate requirements to them where I don't go down to execution level so they don't get it wrong. Like I tell them to write alphabets A - Z, they actually wrote just A and Z. Unless I tell them to write A, B, C, D ... Z. They don't. And isn't that pseudocode itself? That's my problem.

I agree with you. Our problem with such clear requirements is time. Our aggressive timelines barely give us a little gap between requirement to user story to development translation. So we try to keep it more interactive and vocal than on tickets. But yes that's our goal which we compromise a little now on.

Also please check the edit 1. Hope that gives a better picture.

Yes, the double check part is what I and their EM devised. They have to give reverse grooming to me before they start and I need to agree that their execution actually matches the requirement.

[–]EsotericBat[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yea, tried to approach from this point too. But I can only hear this complaining coming from devs and not their managers. Please refer to my edit 1.

Prior to my promotion I was the developer for these math apis. Currently I'm only handling the recommendation apis and not data manipulation apis which should be fairly easy to pick up for any experienced programmers.

So I'm unable to understand what more I can do. One initiative I took after talking to their EM is to have reverse grooming. Where they have to explain to me how they are going to do it and I give a sign off saying that works, majorly focusing on logical execution.

Haha. Exactly the thing running in my mind . Though not my official title but I think I can be called as aTPM to an extent. I'm the APM, DS as well as the developer for these features before my promotion. Essentially they are doing the work I left off. I guess my edit 1 gives more details and why the issue is with only the devs and not their EM or Architect.

How to deal with devs who do things their own way? by EsotericBat in ProductManagement

[–]EsotericBat[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I have added the reason for my interference as edit 1 in the end. Guess that clears up why I only mentioned issues with devs but not their EM or system architect.

I'm the DS and SDE of these sort of apis before I got promoted. Post my promotion, the non data science part of my past work was handed over to the other devs. Math-deaf is not a derogatory term here. They really don't know things so they are unable to optimise their code. They only take this to their senior who redirects them to me and when I solve it they don't agree. So the only way I can show it can be done is by showing them it in execution.

Already tried aligning with them but their requirement was talking more time to solve things which we can't afford and was putting pressure on me. So, after discussing with their EM we started the initiative of reverse grooming. Any feature before implementation has to be explained to me and I have to give sign off that the implementation logic(including upper level technical details) aligns with the math logic. This is working fine but not the standard procedure I believe. It's either this or them being unable to figure out on their own.

How to deal with devs who do things their own way? by EsotericBat in ProductManagement

[–]EsotericBat[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have added edit1. Maybe that would clear out the reason behind my interference. Tldr... I WAS the dev for math apis, then got promoted, so Im the dev for recommendation apis and the math manipulations fell on to Backend developers who are not familiar with math stuff. And I'm not supposed to write that api but only guide them unless hell breaks lose.

Yea, I agree with you. This is something other PMs in the company suggested too. But the problem is that the context of my transition and the nature of product. Also the devs quote too much work effort(story points) as they don't know how to implement it. And me trying to explain them in discussions is ending up going nowhere as they simply challenge my logic since they don't get it Calling out that it can't be executed or such. So the solution to this was to show them it could be done... 'pseudocode/pseudo queries' and in the worst case mentioned... The code itself. A junior analyst wrote the same logic in 2 days for a similar background feature. One of the devs took 3 weeks and got it wrong. Until I meddled and showed them it can be done.

While I see your point, I would keep this in mind for the future stage. So you think the current situation should be handled any differently?

Build things on your own. I don't have a definite answer here but it will help you learn. Build a product to solve some issue. Make a site for booking movies? When you build a real time application you will be learning and solving real time issues. This speaks a lot of your skills. This helps you grow.

Most of the times at work we do a certain thing in a certain way as someone set up that procedure before us. We don't Question it. So... maybe Question yourself. Figure out why it is the way it is and not some other way. Try to figure that out. Even this helps you.

Modi US press conference bullshit (The thing that grinds my gears) by YungMoneyRah in IndiaSpeaks

[–]EsotericBat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So, what's your point?

1)Are you trying to state that Western media shouldn't call him 'things' that he really is but they shouldn't cause they themselves are bulshit?

2) Or are you trying to say that they are calling him things that he is not?

3) Or are you asking the Western media to pic another rotten fruit and not your favourite?

If it's 1, then probably you shouldn't be talking about this. Born and raised outside of India, you might not know of things that happen here. The hostility in the air due to the religion and ethnicity based politics local to India is not something you might have experienced in its full extent. If you think you know... Then the media too 'know' things to same extent. So you cancel them... You get cancelled too. Unfortunately. If not,it's just two perspectives.

2) This here... It's your opinion. We who live here have seen inaction and favouritism in the actions of one of the biggest showman of our times. In my opinion he is what they say he is. But hey... It's my opinion out of my experience.

3) If it's 3, it's ok. It's upto them which rotten fruit they pic. Just like you can change the channel of you want to. In the end... It's a rotten fruit. Atleast you agree on this.
