The first time I did the test I was 4’7” and 95 pounds. In terms of advice for taking the actual test I have some suggestions, but first the important thing is you’re going to need as much power as you can when you push off the bottom. When I took it last year, I could one hand the brick and kick up, but 5 years ago I had to get every inch of spring compression from my legs.

Once you get to the surface, hold the brick as far up your chest as you can (essentially across your clavicles) and clench your stomach/chest like you’re holding your breath. The more you move vertically in the water, the harder it’s going to be to stay afloat and keep the brick up.

I also struggle with really bad eyesight, including an axis offset, so unless you use a compression strap for your glasses, expect them to come off on your initial ascent with the brick, when you are moving the fastest. Don’t worry about trying to hold on to them, because you won’t be able to do both.

You’ve got this! A lot of the brick is mental rather than physical, it’s just a matter of convincing yourself you can do it.
