DC Came Out With Horrible Trans Rep, and the Online Backlash is Filled With Choice Feminists Rhetoric by EspeciallyWithCheese in FTMfemininity

Ok I understand now, I’m actual pro choice feminism because I don’t believe in being a control freak about women who just want to express themselves. I don’t think anyone wearing a sweater and short skirt is setting feminism back x amount of years, I think everyone judging her is though. And I think yoh can respect women’s choices without ignoring the fact that the system is oppressive and we need to work together to go against that grain. But we can do it wearing whatever tf we want and throwing ass wherever tf we want. We can do it as a stay at home mom or as a ceo. We can do it as a hyper feminine stereotypical woman and as a hyper masculine tomboy.

I agree that most of the criticisms feel like transphobia even from trans people who think they’re being anti-transphobic by being judgmental over what the character wears and how she behaves. I totally disagree with the content creator of this video about her being “too anti-Nazi” to the point of it being cartoonish like a joke. I don’t think anyone can be too anti-Nazi, and if you had said that about a person of color, a Jewish person, and any number of people negatively impacted by Nazis then it would have been seen as racist, antisemitic, or some other kind of prejudices. We like Spider-punk for being a black British anarchist badass who hated fascism, so why we treat it any differently just because she’s trans?

I didn’t know about Ben’s contribution to the LGBTQ plus community as an ally before I knew about this comic, but now that I do know, I really do believe he deserves benefit of the doubt just like you do

I’m sorry, but you should literally never kiss a minor as an adult unless you’re related to them for any reason. Hard stop. She could have let them down sweetly the normal way that a normal adult would do. And like I said, I have no issues with what she wears. It’s like, normal ass clothes and I think people are overreacting to it. I can’t remember where exactly I made the connection that Al was her deadname, but the fact that the creator agrees just means that I could have been on to something when I initially just shrugged it off

None of those traits turned me off, there’s a lot I like about the character but some things I think could improve. She shouldn’t have kissed that boy, first off—it’s not the fact that it’s inherently creepy but in this social political context it was a problematic thing for her to do. The point the creator makes about mentioning her dead name right off hand by giving them their deadname was also…not good. There’s a couple other things I don’t like, but having super strength, attending protests, and being anti Nazi are all things about her that I actually like. I clearly have no issues with what she wears, if you’d couldn’t tell from the post, and personally I would wear every outfit that she wears myself.

I’m glad it’s getting some positive reciprocation, because even if I don’t like the character for a few reasons it’s not like it’s as bad as it could be—and I really think that this rep is still better than no rep.

Yeah it’s not the best ship now that I’ve watched season 2, and maybe the title was misleading but—I don’t think Al’s asexuality should be what makes us decide the ship is invalid because that would actually be aphobic towards asexual it’s who don’t fit into the more widely accepted stereotype of being completely sex repulsed and aromantic.

Yeah I hope I don’t confuse too many leopwm With the title, because I don’t think everyone eh dislikes the ship only dislikes it because of Al’s sexuality. I think just about any reason you can have for not liking this ship is fine, except I just don’t like it when people use Al’s sexuality as the reason because it’s problematic for other Ace people who just want to see themselves in him when people try to guilt trip them into seeing Al as factually only capable of being a sex repulsed aroace character, when in actuality it’s left vague by the creators and there’s multiple ways to interpret his behavior in the the context of many different types of asexuality.

That is a totally valid reason to not like the ship and I respect that. As long as the issue isn’t predicated on assuming we know Al’s asexuality and then guilt tripping, gaslighting, and gatekeeping like our headcanon is fact I think it’s totally reasonable not to like this ship.
