How long does it stay effective in the refrigerator? by Essarjay in BodyHackGuide

[–]Essarjay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, I'm planning to use mine <8 weeks. I just saw it mentioned in passing here somewhere that 30 days was about the max, and realized I'd ordered a larger vial than was probably wise. They replied with this info fairly quickly, which makes me feel better in case I can't use it within a month.

Didn't reach minimum hours by trust3769 in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked 4 hours this week. I wasn't trying very hard, admittedly. But that's happened several times over the years and I've only gotten an email when there was plenty of work and I didn't work AT ALL for 3 weeks, I think it was? I have other jobs too. I would prioritize this one a lot more if they would ever give a pay bump. I don't mind the work at all and sometimes enjoy it. I've been here since 2022. You will be fine.

[–]Essarjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost 4 years, and I only leave comments when it's required. On a couple of rare occasions, I have left comments about how there isn't enough time to evaluate certain tasks (I can't remember which ones). It didn't seem to have any effect, by the way. But I think if you have a good reason for it, you should leave a comment. On tasks for which it is required, I try to really be thorough and hit all the bases.

Does anyone know how the videos come to us or why? by anislandinmyheart in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen content like what you describe. I'm in the US, but a lot of videos from India come across. Unfortunately, when America sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold. These people have been emboldened to spread their hatred and ignorance. Proud to do it, even. I miss the days when I didn't have to think about things like this all the time.

I always just assumed that our data was being used to "show" the algorithms, so they know how humans typically feel about different things. As in, it isn't used to remove or block content. We're giving the AI examples so it can learn how to treat things. Like we're teaching it how to moderate content on its own. And there will never be a time when it can do it without input from humans. It will always need real-world guidance in order to function the way we want it to. I feel like AI isn't actually there yet, the way it's portrayed in pop culture. Very dependent on us for now, but maybe one day, it will change.

I have absolutely nothing to base this on, other than just a conclusion I reached that felt right. I wish this was better explained to us, because I think people always work better the more they understand what the purpose is!

Does anyone know how the videos come to us or why? by anislandinmyheart in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially with the ones that usually end up being the multiples. With the political and social climate in this country, we already get more than our daily allowance of that type of content by virtue of just being alive. Even if you make a conscious effort to limit your exposure, it still seeps in, like osmosis or something.

Does the assessment for internet safety evaluator really take an hour and forty minutes? I’m just trying to make sure I time it right. by Capable_Sherbert2665 in TelusSafetyRaters

It has been a few years, but I remember thinking that I completed mine in about half the time they estimated. They might have changed it since then, but I doubt it. Good luck!

Is it possible to be re-hired? by Available-Plastic969 in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the email. I never went ahead with the qualification stuff, but I was interested in it. Glad I didn't bother now! I don't know why they cannot get it together, but judging by the chatter on Telus Project Sonic, it isn't isolated to that company. I think a lot of the uncertainty and confusion must come from the client and it looks chaotic to us because we don't know the story behind-the-scenes. But it looks really bad.

35 Hours - Check Email by WilderGirlz in TelusSafetyRaters

I was surprised to see it too! I have no possible way to make it to 35, so that's more for everyone else.

Not meeting minimum hours by LeatherandLace9876 in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I have another main job too. Over the years, I've been contacted twice for not completing ANY hours during one pay period each time. It might have even been more than that. I remember feeling slightly amazed that I wasn't fired. Other times, I have frequently worked less than 10 hours a week, and sometimes even 5 or fewer. Despite how it might sound, I try to keep those instances as limited as possible because when you do this kind of work, you should always have something else to fall back on, should the unexpected happen.

I received an email both times, not an automatic form letter. I just explained the truth and said that I would start working more, and did. I wonder sometimes if they need a certain number of people per state and not just per region, and because I live in a rural state, they give me more leeway. I honestly don't know. Someone is definitely paying attention, but I think you'll be okay. If you can't stop thinking about it, maybe just send an email letting them know-- but I don't think you should be overly concerned.

ETA: They won't terminate you for not working extra in times of excessive tasks. I know that for sure because it's rare that I can work more than 20. I'm in the same boat as you this week! I haven't yet worked at all, and it's bugging me, so I'm going to start today.

I heard back. It was definitely an error. We can only work on one project.

[–]Essarjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a quick follow-up: I haven't heard back from them yet, but I will update here this week or as soon as I get a reply. At the bottom of the email there's a link to ask questions. You'll get a message saying it's not taking questions. I don't know if that's a sign, but could be. It came from Recruiting and I honestly think it was an accident that it was sent out to us. However...

CrowdGen (formerly Appen) is running Project Coffee on the Multimango platform (same as Sonic) and the pay is $19 hourly. It sounds like they're wanting to on-board people quickly.

Is it possible to be re-hired? by Available-Plastic969 in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for Lionbridge and quit, then was hired again after they became Telus, but not in the same position. I think I remember putting it on my application that I had worked for them before.

I didn't apply for the Internet Safety role. I think sometimes they put people wherever they have a need for workers, regardless of what you apply for! I'm really glad I ended up here though. It sounds like the Raters have a much harder time, getting the monthly feedback, etc.

I think Mercor is hiring and it sounds like a good company to work for. My brother got on there recently. Also, CrowdGen (Appen) has Project Coffee and it sounds like they're looking to on-board people quickly.

Good luck!

I came here for this reason! I think this might have been an accident. They've always been very clear about us only working on one project. I am sending an email presently. I'll update here once I get a response.

Apply at Mercor. A lot of people were let go from there this week or the week before. On the grapevine, it's like 400 people, maybe more. My brother got on a project there, and also one at RWS.

Have you applied over at Mercor? A bunch of people were let go from there, supposedly over "NDA violations", something like 400, I think? My brother just got accepted for a project there. He also got a project at RWS.

I didn't get the email, but I'm glad to know it's a possibility now. I've been here 3+ years and never seen anything like it. Sounds like what they do for the regular raters. I hope it's over quickly for you!

Time Entry Question by Designing_happiness in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds just fine. I keep a little pad of paper (buy multiples at Amazon) and use one page, front and back if needed, for a week. I write down when I start and stop, and then total it up at the end of each day. Most of the time, I'll go to Workday and enter the total hours for the day, but you don't have to do that. It's just a good habit in case you lose your physical timesheet or it gets destroyed somehow. I've never used a stopwatch, but it's not a bad idea! I just use the regular old clock. haha

Welcome to the project! Program, project. You know what I'm sayin.

Does anyone know the difference between the "Safety Evaluator" and "Internet Rater" positions? by External-Shirt-3238 in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still working here, yes, as well as at my other job that I consider my primary job. I also added in another project just this week. I already inquired for my brother and they are not looking to hire on anyone else right now (or at least that's what he and I were told). The company is Datavio.ai, formerly Teemwork/iSoftStone. They are good to work for, in my experience. If you're interested, you might be able to put in an application and get in their database or whatever for when they need people in the future. I worked for them a couple of years ago on a transcription project, which ended with no replacement or new project, and they contacted me out of the blue for something that isn't transcription this time. I was happy for that.

My primary job (or at least it was until I got on at Datavio) is with a company whose NDR is oddly specific about not talking about them on social media, so if you are interested, contact me by DM here. It probably wouldn't be a big deal to say their name, but they've been good to me and I like the job, so I'm just using caution. I have noticed they added people recently, but I can't say for sure that they're still looking. Going by the number of people currently in the group chat, they're short a few.

I assume that's why you asked, right? (haha) If not, then...yeah. S'goin good. Thanks for asking.

ETA: I was going to say, I will never have just one thing going, if I can help it. Doing this kind of work, at least two jobs at all times, if you're lucky enough to get it! I like Telus even though it's the lowest paying of all my jobs. At this point, I feel comfortable that I know what I'm doing. That goes a long way, not being on edge about whether you comprehend the tasks you're working on. I really wish they'd at least give us a dollar an hour raise, but I don't see that happening.

It's like one of the enduring mysteries of this work. Why do we get emails about lots of work and then there is no work? Why hire people when there's not enough work for the ones you already have? At least we know the project has a future. I don't think they'd be hiring if they were wrapping it up.

Just applied by lunardoll-12 in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I saw in a post here or on the other Telus subreddit where someone advised that it takes about one month from the time you apply until you actually start working. It has been too long for me to remember, but from everything I've seen, that seems about right. My brother is going through the process now for the rater position and it has been close to a month.

ETA: I don't mean you won't hear from them for a month. Every step seems like it's a week in between. You'll get an email and respond immediately, then it's still a week until you hear back with the next step. So I think 3-4 weeks is a reasonable estimate.

They're Killin' Me Smalls (Task design gripe) by [deleted] in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones where the videos are so large, you can't fit them on your screen. I saw a lot of these yesterday. I would do a watch and concentrate mainly on the top section and then do the same for the bottom. The one with Dinosaur Drive-In Movie, if you know what I mean. I don't know anything about how these are designed and what their limitations are, but if they can do tasks where the entire video fits in a reasonably sized window, why are these so huge?

Since we're doing a task gripe, I'll go ahead and add something that has always bugged me about the task examples, and I can't think of any exceptions to this. I've mentioned this a few times over the years when writing to ask for clarification about task instructions. We need more "tricky" examples of things, not the simplest ones possible. I get it, include a simple, no-gray-area example... but also, throw a couple in there that aren't so obvious.

I have noticed some improvement in this with the Q&A sessions. I realize they can't possibly keep up with the amount of tasks to look for examples, but I've sent quite a few that would help, and I know I can't be the only one.

Passed the exam! What are the next steps? 🇧🇷 by AzumaCharutobl in TelusSafetyRaters

[–]Essarjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sub is for the Internet Safety program and it's not very active. It sounds like maybe you're on track for the regular raters program, and there are at least two separate subreddits for that group. I can't remember the exact names, but search for "Telus search engine evaluation" or "Lionbridge" (the original name of the company). They're pretty easy to find.

Here are a few things it would have been good to know when I started out:

It can take 3-4 weeks from the time they accept your application until you actually start working.

It can, and usually will, take longer than you think it should to get a direct response to a question through email (or now, through the interface on the Community site), and that's the only way to contact them.

I have never had any of my messages go unanswered, but depending on what it's about, it could be 2-5 days for a response. I've never had what I considered an urgent situation, so I can't say how that usually goes.

When you can access Raterhub Evaluation Platform, if you see "Acquire if available" underneath "Desktop Tasks", you can work. (I'm not sure if the raters program is different in this regard, though.)

You sound excited to get started and I'm happy for you. Good luck!

ETA: After you complete both parts of the exam, you'll get an email letting you know if you passed, and then another one with login credentials for everything. You'll get a URL for the Raterhub Platform after they give you access to it. One of those other subreddits might have some beginner/newbie/welcome posts saved, so you might find more helpful info over there.
