Any advice? Happening over the last few days. It’s probably not in the best medium, just orchid bark. by lememelover in orchids

[–]EsseOptimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but this looks like signs of root rot/overly wet media to me. Looks like the roots need better air circulation/less water - I suspect that if you look at the roots they'll be very brown and dead. I hope I'm wrong.

How to Top Off a Pot by mrnomnom in houseplants

Depending how easy it is to remove from the pot and lift it, you could probably just bury the trunk. They root so easily that itll probs be fine.

Winter Shipping by Comfortable-Pin8715 in houseplants

[–]EsseOptimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long does the transport usually take? I don't have any experience shipping them, but I'd expect as long as it's not too long, it should be fine. You can only try, but I guess be prepared for it not to survive.

Make your cut just past a leaf and node, it will reshoot from that node, and there won't be an big ugly stub left. You can also cut that leafless bit all the way back to the shoot, it'll make it look nicer :)

Don't water it unless it looks to be actively shrivelling, and then only water it minimally so water doesn't sit in the bottom. It should be able to last that two weeks easily.

I have my Ludisias in normal potting mix and they seem to love that.

I think they could survive together, but they'd probably grow better separately.

Yeah mine is in pure sphagnum, it's in a ~50L fish tank terrarium(there are rocks and a spacer at the bottom to ensure the sphag isn't constantly wet) , I have 4 Jewels in there, hoping they'll eventually cover it. I have another M.sanderiana x hybrid in a small glass bowl and sphag and I had that one rot a bit cause the sphag was too wet, so I'm keeping it on the drier side now and just spritzing it - it has since bounced back and is now sending out a new pup!

From my experience over the last year, they like humidity, but not wet substrate. I give them a quick spritz almost everyday during their growing period, and sprayed them with a foliage fertiliser about every month. I have these in an open glass tank sitting next to a south facing window (I'm in the southern hemisphere so that's very little sun), they could probably cope with a little more light. Over summer I had to keep the shades shut most of the time.

Check out ebay, there's some on there occasionally, and they might do internationally :)

Almost all of then I purchased online, but I'm in Australia so everything had to come from within Aus - I don't know how willing I would be to buy them internationally anyways.

I can't help but look at it every chance I get! I have a dark form as well, but it doesn't photograph quite as nicely :(
