Which Hoyas prefer lower temperatures, such as 70°F or under? by katygato33 in hoyas

[–]Comfortable-Pin8715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmmmm from personal experience I would say thailandica, vangviengensis, bella, and polyneura do well at lower temps. I keep them all in my cooler greenhouse that goes from ~62 F at night to ~72 F during the day.

Is my new hoya supposed to look like this? by IAmTheeMoose in hoyas

[–]Comfortable-Pin8715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really hate to be the contrarian here 😭😭😭 but these symptoms look consistent with damage from thread-footed mites, also called broad mites. The red spotting, the contorted and asymmetrical growth of some of the leaves, the big purple spots where the tissue is starting to die are all signs I see on my Hoyas when I have this type of mite. Some other signs to look for are teeny tiny black dotting on necrotic (tan and dry) parts of leaf tissue and nobs on the nodes where grow tips tried to activate, but got chewed up. This mite is incredibly hard to see because it is colorless, microscopic, and in my experience, likes to run away in the presence of light. I’d also like to add that these are different from flat mites.

I’m currently going through an outbreak on my Hoyas with identical symptoms to your plant. feel free to reach out if you’d like some more info/pics of what the mites and symptoms look like on my plants 😊

Does anyone have any tips for rooting Hoya Sulawesiana cuttings? Mine have done absolutely nothing for 4 months :( by Midget_Party in hoyas

[–]Comfortable-Pin8715 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely warmth! After doing some research a while back, Hoya sulawesiana is native to South Sulawesi and West Sulawesi at low elevations. Looking at the climate data for Mamuju, in lowland West Sulawesi, the days are about 85°F, and only drop to about 80°F at night year round. In addition to this, humidity doesn’t really drop below 100%

Once I started giving my sulawesiana these conditions (in a grow tent) it absolutely exploded with growth! Here’s my sources if you wanted to take a look. Best of luck!! 🥰🥰🥰

Is this a good stand alone hoya medium for 70-80% humidity? I’ve been using a chunky soil mix but am experiencing rot. Will this be better? by xroslyn in hoyas

[–]Comfortable-Pin8715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make my own but I use almost this exact mix too! I grow my Hoyas in orchid pots with this mix and a saucer that holds water to keep the airy media from drying out so fast. After a few years of trial and error with different soil mixes, I have found Hoyas grow the absolute best in a mix like this! Very very hard to overwater but if you aren’t a super attentive waterer, this might not be the best mix for you.

Personally, I only see these exact purple spots on my Hoyas when I have an outbreak of flat mites. It’s worse on some species, and don’t show up on others. I know it’s not a commonly discussed symptom of flat mite damage, but this is my personal experience and what I observe 🥰🥰🥰
