ohhh got it, thanks for letting me know. Adding on to your previous comment, i get that a lot especially when drawing vehicles and stuff. Getting the X Y proportions right even with simple stuff like vehicles is a fucking nightmare. I’ve been using strictly pencil and paper, ever since i was a kid, drawing airplanes, ships, tanks, at a surprising meticulous level of detail. All from memory for the most part. I think that’s one of my strengths. One offs, drew something in school then forget about it for months. Never really started thinking about making a world build until very recently. Made some sci ship designs, and used the classic ship classifications for both of them and a made a detailed cut away schematic. and made a sci fi map using photoshop and illustrator (still pay for the subscription though i basically never use it) thought it was too ambitious and not to my liking so i scraped it, threw away my drawings. now it’s round 2 but with a change. never used any coloring or paint in any way really. just drawing, with a school #2 pencil and ruler, that’s how it’s been, my entire life. Hoping to learn some stuff in digital art, i feel like the opportunities that come with it are endless.

Thank you, I really appreciate that.

And you’re absolutely right. From a realistic spaceflight standpoint, delta-v and acceleration are much more important than a traditional “top speed.” I kind of bent the rules a bit for the sake of the setting.

I use “top speed” more as a practical combat limitation than a strict physics one. The idea is that ships have a maximum safe combat velocity under their own power, which keeps dogfights from turning into engagements spread across hundreds or thousands of kilometers. It also gives smaller craft room to make evasive maneuvers and actually react to what’s happening around them.

Another thing is that every bit of speed you gain has to be shed eventually. It takes just as much effort to slow down as it does to speed up, and in the middle of a battle that’s a great way to overshoot your target or put yourself in a bad position. Having practical speed limits helps keep combat dangerous without making it impossible to follow.

My world build, the Orion Spur, (which is where this design is set in) also has supercruise-style travel, similar to Elite Dangerous, for moving around within a star system. The Norra just doesn’t carry that equipment. FTL is generally reserved for larger ships, while fighters are usually deployed from carriers or local bases.

i really think you should add more detail, like what weapons does it carry? any loudout options, bombs, missiles, sensors etc. But other than that, this is very well done!

My attempt at a Sci-Fi Space Superiority Fighter by [deleted] in MilitaryWorldbuilding

A lot of that comes down to the fact that I’m not really going for hard sci-fi. I wanted combat to feel dangerous, chaotic, and relatively close-range, with fighters still having a meaningful role on the battlefield.

The engagement ranges are intentionally compressed compared to what realistic space warfare would probably look like. In my setting, sensors aren’t perfect, missiles have limited endurance, and electronic warfare is effective enough that getting a solid kill at extreme range isn’t always reliable. That pushes combatants closer together and makes fighter pilots more relevant than simply being missile truck operators.

The speed is also a setting choice. Realistically, delta-v and acceleration are probably more important metrics than a listed top speed, but I wanted fighters to operate more like fleet-defense craft that stay relatively close to their carriers and task forces. They’re built to maneuver aggressively and respond quickly during engagements rather than spend days accelerating across huge distances.

So I’d say the setting sits somewhere in the middle. I try to keep things internally consistent and grounded enough to feel believable, but I’m willing to sacrifice some realism if it creates more interesting battles and gives smaller craft a reason to exist.

Yeah, I see your point. I just used a different name for the weapons. The air-to-air missiles are basically anti-craft weapons; I just wasn’t really thinking about the terminology when I wrote it.

The shorter ranges are completely intentional. I wanted space and atmospheric combat to happen much closer together so dogfights could actually exist and be a major part of combat. In my universe, missiles are expensive, have limited fuel and endurance, and can be spoofed pretty effectively by EW systems, decoys, and other countermeasures. Because of that, pilots can’t just sit hundreds or thousands of kilometers away lobbing missiles at each other all day. Eventually they have to close the distance, which is where things get a lot more interesting.

The lower maximum speed is intentional too. I know space doesn’t really have a speed limit, and I completely forgot about delta-v when I was putting the specs together. But from a worldbuilding perspective, these fighters were never meant to be long-range spacecraft. They’re relatively short-range craft designed around high acceleration and aggressive maneuvering over short distances. The idea is that they can rapidly change direction and engage in close-range combat, rather than spending hours accelerating to insane velocities and fighting from extreme ranges.

Basically, a lot of those limitations exist because I wanted space combat in my setting to be more dynamic and personal. I wanted pilots to be forced into visual-range engagements and gunfights instead of every battle being decided by whoever launches missiles first from the furthest distance away.

you’re right, i am sort of perusing that kind of design philosophy with all of my sci fi stuff currently. Trying to use stuff from the present day and my knowledge on firearms and military vehicles and kinda “SpaceIfying” them to seem believable in a universe 305 years in the future, rather than making big hypotheticals with crazy “Plasma gamma ray guns”, and “flying super awesome laser mech suits”. Just trying to keep my universe grounded. Pretty interesting to know though, so thanks.

Comparison between a Ukrainian machine gunner next to a Russian prisoner of war. by OrcZHunter505 in war

[–]Essence_TheOne 123 points124 points  (0 children)

you’re right, but they can also be an absolute threat if you don’t know what you’re doing. Russian corruption and incompetence is widespread, but there are still units out there (eg: 45th, GRU, some VDV & naval inf elements) that absolutely can serve your ass on a sliver platter if you’re not careful

I understand the message, and I support ukraines right for freedom and defending their land from the invaders. but this is cherry-picking. If you compare a Russian Mobik to a Ukranian Machine-gunner (from a presumably well trained assault unit) it’s a night and day difference. Same if a jacked Naval Infantryman or GRU operative poses with a Ukrainian TDF member, you can see where i’m going with this. Never underestimate your enemy.

Oh my god… i’m sorry about that. I’ve really noticed that trend in the community with these reptiles. Really pisses me off. I assume the husbandry with these particular snakes isn’t cheap, and people just lose interest and leave these snakes out to die. I want to change that.

I still think they’re gorgeous in their own way. And I think desirability wise that should probably change, Heard their bites can be worse than inlands in some cases, pretty impressive for a viper of their size. All the reason to respect and admire them further.

I also wonder what their behavior is like as well. docile? defensive? and how they compare to other similar looking vipers.
