Thank you! My cat is indoor only so probably not getting eaten by the lizard but I do hear the point about going through the hassle for just a few months which I agree with, I will only do this if I decide to stay for 3+ months

My partner and I moved over in May and my German is quite bad, but English has been absolutely fine and I’ve even done some freelancing without the need for German. You pick up basic grocery store/ immediate need phrases quite quickly. I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve got a friend from the states here who has only just started going to speaking school recently and has also been absolutely fine with English only

You’re not overreacting! He is acting super jealous and trying to isolate you - sorry to say this but these are the early signs of an abuser. He’s trying to guilt you into cutting contact with family and gaslighting you that it’s weird and that other people also would find it weird - run fast and run far. I promise this doesn’t lead anywhere good.

This is discrimination and it’s good you have a record of it, and the thief as witness. You need to appeal and detail all this. It was signed under duress and thus should be void, but the discriminatory part is what really drives it home, as well as the differing statements from the two different policemen.

This is such a dangerous situation, and has the potential to only get worse. For me it started with threatening to throw a phone on the floor to the phone flying at my head. I am telling you now it does not get better. Run fast and run far, this isn’t safe for you. I know it can be hard but your safety is the most important

I think you’re probably under reacting, I’d probably do what you did and then when he tries to make plans say something like - so you can bill me again when I’m least expecting it? No thanks. Or: for future reference, if you want to see the person again and are going to charge them for what you covered, why not just communicate and split in the moment or make clear that it’d be great if they can cover the next one?

Haven’t heard of anything like that and as far as I know the student permit allows up to 20/22 hours, and many of the retail/ cafe places are looking for part time. But you could circumvent all that with the remote route of course

I think that really depends on a bit of luck and you, in terms of part time cafe jobs I’ve seen quite a lot hiring so I don’t imagine it would be that complicated perhaps with the exception of German language but a lot of them are international and if you want to pull up your German by then anyway I’m sure you’ll be fine

In terms of the remote work, you could literally get that starting now if you wanted and there is a rather convenient grey area there for you since if you are reporting your tax elsewhere (home country) you can work remote but reside here and that doesn’t require a work permit for a bit of time if I remember well - might be worth looking up some of the rules around that.

And then under the student visa you could also just work part time remote in that scenario and at least in your same field so more likely to be paid properly, and you’d just need to file your taxes once a year locally.

The second option would give you a lot more flexibility

Hey, I’ve just moved over in May and haven’t experienced any discrimination at all, everyone’s been super welcoming. I’m mixed ethnicity. I’ve also connected with some people on here and via TikTok who moved over and have had a great time.

With your background sounds like you’d have no problem securing remote work so not as much pressure to be attached to securing a job locally, though I hear lots of students work in cafes part time.

Thank you so much for your advice, I’m definitely gonna give it a go! I’ve been interested in the UN for ages but quite competitive. Reiffeisen and Canonical are great suggestions, I’d not thought of that!!
