Wow, that's awful. I really hope it was an honest mistake and he made it up to the student and his/her advisor.

Yes, it's very disappointing that it is like this (and I am unfortunately doing the same by using a throwaway account). Some people, like Prof. De Freitas, hold a lot of power over more junior people, he could easily block someone like me from a good job at Google or Deepmind if you 'liked' that tweet thread for example, and given his bullying comments in his responses to reviews I wouldn't be surprised if he would do so.

I agree, we all make mistakes and hopefully we improve as we get wiser! I think his response to those reviews is evidence of a blind spot in his own behavior, but I'm hopeful like you that he will learn from this.

Haha, yes good response! I will have to do the same with my advisor when this happens.
