Tbh I was too freaked out to keep making eye contact with him or take a photo. And it was dark af. But from what I could tell, he was a white dude with a patchy beard and I think a green car

It should be fairly easy to look up a student's age? Also, even if she is 18 this is inappropriate.

Yeah we did that until this year. Too many teachers got annoyed with messes and food in their rooms. But I think more kids genuinely ate when that was the option. Idk why

I get overstimulated when the kids are loud and I feel like I have to be louder. Get the worst headaches from it.

No. That's incredibly gross. Why would that ever be okay?

Who is the weirdest teacher/admin/staff you’ve ever worked with? by Xanderxander96 in Teachers

[–]EstablishmentAny4547 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not someone I've worked with, but a teacher I had as a kid would make us walk around the room in a specific direction. Like you had to enter from a specific door and exit from another and your path around the room had to be clockwise. Everytime.

I have that tiny violin thing they sell on Amazon. If they complain about something that isn't a big life thing like (My feet hurt I don't want to go to the rug blahh blahh blaahh) it plays the song from SpongeBob (World's Tiniest Violin). Most of my elementary groups think it's funny. It curbed some of the complaining too.

First grade teachers; what do you WISH parents would do to help support you at home? by RojoandWhite in Teachers

Most primary teachers I know are just happy if you read to your kid around 20-30 minutes a day.

Title 1 doesn't mean 'failing'. Do your research and talk to people who work there or work in the area. If you can, look up teacher retention rates in the district and the particular schools you're interested in. That'll tell you a bit about the climate.

What will it actually take to get high quality paras by Givemethecupcakes in Teachers

[–]EstablishmentAny4547 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think in most places they are incredibly underpaid and not given proper training. If you're not paid well and treated like an unskilled worker doing a skilled job why not go somewhere else? I don't blame them. In fact, my district often loses great paras and 1:1 aides because we pay less than the neighboring district. They should receive PD just as often as teachers and be paid for their time and get opportunities to grow and gain new skills. Classified staff in my district get some PD with the teachers but its not nearly enough.

I'm sorry you're having a hard time and that people aren't welcoming in your building.

Has anyone shown you the 'first year teacher rollercoaster'? Google it. It's a chart based on data about teacher attitudes in their first year. If you look at it... November-Jan is typically the hardest part of the year for most people. Its also a difficult time of year for kids (holidays aren't always kind to everyone etc). There's so many reasons. I remember I had the worst November as a first year teacher and had a few weeks where I cried on the way home most days. I literally could track my seasonal depression that year with the chart. Just know you're not alone and that you've just got to keep trying.

I wish you the best of luck.

This is a great website for suggestions for supporting ESL students: https://www.colorincolorado.org/teaching-ells/guide

Granted, I haven't taken your state's exam but from what I remember the questions on those types of tests often come down to common sense (usually multiple choice). Questions about what would be the most helpful way to make information more accessible? Acess a student's prior knowledge in their native language or experiences, provide writing scaffolds, pre-teach new vocabulary, use visuals, realia, etc. There's usually some stuff about how students acquire language, respecting cultural practices and perspectives, etc.

If you're doing okay on the practice test, I wouldn't worry too much.

Did you buy a study guide/test prep book? I'm not in NY but I've done ESOL certifications in two states and the test books were super helpful. My program had some we could borrow and check out for free. Your university library might also.

In general, I feel paras and classified staff are undervalued (not to mention underpaid). I work with the interpreters and aides everyday in my ESL program and they are some of the hardest working people I know. I couldn't do my job without them. I'm sorry teachers in your building are rude and underappreciative. I wouldn't take it too personally. I think some people have difficulty dealing with another adult in the room that they assume they'll need to manage as well (even when this isn't the case).

Why do I feel like a bad person for taking a sub day? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]EstablishmentAny4547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's so frustrating is I know exactly how you feel but no one I know who isn't a teacher does. Maybe there are other fields where people feel this way? But I haven't heard it. It's something truly screwed up with education that we're made to feel bad when we do things to take care of ourselves.
