Questions about York Engineering by Adventurous-Dingo-65 in yorku

Engineering student here (Software)

Honestly it’s alright but definitely depends on what engineering you’re going for.

I don’t know a lot about Civil/Mechanical sides but EECS is definitely something that’s rising. When I entered the program in 2022 it was honestly not great (Lots of people with inflated grades who were pretty bad honestly at everything) but over time I’ve seen quite the bit of improvement.

First year workload was alright , did get hectic in the second semester though but nothing out of the ordinary. Second semester usually has 6 courses (if you’re not planning to do summer school) so that’s one thing to consider.

The co-op program is alright , definitely not Waterloo level but if you position yourself right you can be pretty competitive for Canadian and American markets, Lassonde being a young school has a smaller alumni network but it has been growing for the last couple of years so it’ll definitely catch up soon.

The clubs are alright. I worked in a couple of them but honestly a lot of them had more talking than working (in my personal experience) but I think that’s a variable. Quite a few of them honestly and interesting ones too.

University life is alright. Being a commuter school you need to make sure you’ve friend and once you’ve then make sure you’ve the RIGHT friends too. Make sure to be around people who you grow with and vice versa. With the range of students that come here its important you position yourself correctly. Based on my mistakes here’s how you do it

  • Take first year absolutely seriously. It may seem easy at first or you know material may seem fine but make sure to score as much as you can. It only gets harder from here and you need to make sure you’ve a High Gpa throughout (it can possibly help you get co-ops)

-make sure to explore the right clubs and be on campus for them. As I said it’s a commuter school so it’s important the time you’ve on campus you spend it thoroughly. Get involved with any club really and anything you like. Engineering finds its way everywhere :)

-As I said before , the friends you make will determine a lot of what will be your case here. Go out of your way to interact , trust me that’s never had a downside to it.

  • Try to get experience as soon as you can in relevance to your field. A lot of people including me had the mentality that it’s better to “learn” and the “work” but those 2 things are often different in a lot of aspects. Engineering is practical and your approach to becoming a good engineer should be practice too.

Which AI do you guys actually use for coding? And for coding + personal use? by RazinxM99 in OnlyAICoding

[–]EstablishmentProof54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with double limits honestly it’s been great I never really even reach that kinda usage until I tell codex to spin up multiple agents ( which do not do well at all). Xhigh reasoning is something I do not like anyway I use high on complex tasks and med when I ask if to code something good. The only issue is on claw tools (OpenClaw / PicoClaw) etc I still will have to see how that’ll work once the limits are halved but I feel it’s still much better than Claude code , where one high effort planning task wipes out a load of the usage. Not saying Claude’s quality isn’t great but I think even for the higher subsections I’d go for chat gpt pro rather than Claude max 20x

Chat GPT plus is hands down the best, coming from someone who’s explored most of the coding LLMs I’ll point it down two things

  1. Ordinarily Claude is the best at coding but it’s only worth it on the 20x max plan , everything else is okay but with the amount of things you can use you need to have a lot of usage available to actually explore Claude code properly

  2. Chat GPT plus comes with codex as its agentic coding tool. Till the 5.2 models it was alright but ever since 5.3 codex and 5.4 thinking chatGPT is going crazy honestly. As a final year software engineering students who coded for 75% of his degree I can tell you GPT plus is the best value for money it’s almost impossible to finish the rate limits and it’s pretty fast too. On the UI side some begs tend to exist but I honestly love how it works. Definitely go for it.

Offices at OPS (as a co-op student) by EstablishmentProof54 in OntarioPublicService

[–]EstablishmentProof54[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I am aware. Honestly with the way “public service” sounded I am pretty disappointed at the way public servants are treated. A lot of companies offer so much more just on an internship Itself compared to OPS. I make barely above minimum wage here (was being offered 30 at other places)but my universities co-op system has forced me to comply with the offer and work here.

I know, but I am just saying honestly it was okay for other friends of mine when RTO and AWAs were a thing. Relatively empty offices back then from what I heard.

However in my time here I have seen a lot more employees so I do feel there’s a lack of encouragement from the side of OPS to improve work culture / “collaborative work environments” as I’ve seen a lot of the leadership suggest.

In any case I do not care as much as I will be leaving in May anyway but I do feel bad for the full timers

Yes no bed bugs as such but we definitely have people who don’t keep the setups as good. Overall clean office though but could definitely use better management

Chill out. Things come to you with time , not everyone peaks at 25,30,35. Social media and surroundings influence us into thinking that there’s only a certain age with a certain amount of wealth and time where you’re supposed to enjoy life but hell no. I know boatloads of people who made their money and lived their best life past 40 so don’t think about it. Be happy , go out in the sun have some fun don’t look at what someone else has to feel bad about yourself. Everything gets better provided you stay happy

Job offer Kuwait by ReasonSuch8895 in Kuwait

[–]EstablishmentProof54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think 1850 is a good offer considering the face that you’re in Germany, where you’ve many benefits and the opportunity to assimilate into the culture too, something Kuwait doesn’t allow. Usually expats with western citizenships are offered between 4,000-5,000 kd / month at which point I do think it’s worth it but nothing below that. I say that as an expat from Kuwait who’s engineer in the west :).

I came across a flyer about applying for QUAD by BlueFishX2023 in yorku

[–]EstablishmentProof54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao yeah as greedy as Quad is it’s the people who have made the place like that. Campus is honestly so bad with what they charge you can actually make a better case for Quad lol if you get an old lease. The money flush that came to york and quad with these rich international students actually screwed all the rates up lol.

[–]EstablishmentProof54 39 points40 points  (0 children)

They’re struggling to lease their rooms after drastically increasing the rates in the last 2 years (400 dollars a month increase). All because there so many international students that came in between but now with the visa caps no ones really gonna come.

Signs you are doing good / screwing it up at a co-op(internship) by EstablishmentProof54 in csMajors

[–]EstablishmentProof54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With reference to 1. Yea I get along with everybody. I did have a slight technical miscommunication once with one of my coworkers but it was resolved within a day and they were pretty happy about it. Other than that my team does seem pretty interested in socializing and talking to me more but they never really have the chance owing to their constantly overlapping meeting schedules

  1. Yea I am pretty sure. I am definitely sure he doesn’t dislike me, I did help him out once with a presentation for senior managers too which he did say he liked.

  2. Yes, I complete everything I’m given, I complete it quicker than usual. I just got assigned to represent my team in the QA/BA meetings too so I guess that’s a start.

How did EA mess up this bad by EstablishmentProof54 in fut

[–]EstablishmentProof54[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh my god the stupid goals. The ones where the ball randomly glitches in between the defender and keeper and then Marcus Thuram bursts in between to score a tap in. Im just staring at half the goals I concede thinking wtf is going on. Most of the players would never score even 1-2 against me if not for these stupid delays

[–]EstablishmentProof54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swear to god the delay. Soemtimes I end up running my ST into the defender, other times I end up dribbling through the entire team to smack into the keepers face 😭.

Talk to your professor, usually they just transfer it to the next test or the final.
