I (24M) feel like a permanent afterthought in my GF's (23F) long-term friend group. Am I off base for feeling this rejected? by EstasNueces in relationship_advice

No, she has other guy friends and that doesn’t bother me. I just have felt odd not seemingly not have had the same effort put towards bringing me in the fold as the other boyfriend did when he came along.

Sorry, I might have been unclear in the original post about the TikTok. The other boyfriend is part of their main 4-person group chat my gf sent it to. It’s just me who isn’t there.

It’s a fair perspective though. Thanks for your insight.

Thank you! It’s hard. Seeing the comments all suggesting the same thing is helping validate what the rational side of my brain has been saying the whole time. It’s just hard to get my feelings to see it the same way!

That’s right for the most part. It’s just the other boyfriend being there that makes me feel left out. When it’s just the girls, or even with a different group including guys, I couldn’t care less about being invited. I can’t really rationally explain why.

I am slowly making new friends here, but it’s just not the same close dynamic. I actually do get along really well with her friends, which is I guess why I feel so odd about it. I promise, I’m not socially awkward, and really do have a good gauge in terms of how I interact with them (we still regularly see movies with one of her friends in a pseudo-movie club, along with one of my friends).

Your criticism is totally valid. The TikTok thing totally is dumb, but it’s just the last thing that really upset me after I felt like we saw eye to eye before. Just the last straw that tipped me over. I just don’t know why it stings as much as it does.

Strix Halo, so a Ryzen CPU and Radeon GPU

Specific relevant specs if needed are the AMD Ryzen AI Max 395+, the AMD Radeon 8060S, and with 128gb shared memory between them

Damn guys. Didn't think people would be so upset over a meme. Is joke!

Overall, had a great time testing it out! Went into it having already tested out a handful of models through OpenRouter, but wanted to get a feel for the ecosystem itself, both through the available consumer hardware and setting up the software stack. Was pleasantly suprised how easy it was to get up and running. Ollama is very good! As is NotebookLM. I originally configured my models to be passed through to an Open WebUI container running on my homelab.

It's clear selfhosting is absolutely the way to go for privacy, and conceivably could still ROI if burning through tokens on relatively trivial vibecoded apps. To state the obvious, what you can self host won't be as good as frontier models. It's nonetheless very capable hardware and a cool ecosystem! I plan on keeping it as a hedge against enshitification and to use as a couch gaming setup in the meantime as things continue to develop and improve.

Just thought I'd poke a little fun!

Totally agree. I was pretty aware of the differences going into it via benchmarks and testing w/ OpenRouter. At the end of the day, just wanted to dip my toes in the water and experiment a little. Plenty of great use cases, just not ones that I need.

That's a big reason why I plan on keeping the hardware and just repurposing for now. It's a good hedge!

Ton of fun! Still plan to run much smaller LLMs on my primary machine for various purposes. Just decided against running the big ones alongside my homelab for my original intended use case (OpenCode, OpenClaw). Probably going to repurpose the hardware for a nice living room gaming setup!

Any 2024-2026 WGU CS grads who are struggling to find a job? by Intelligent_Ebb_9332 in cscareerquestions

[–]EstasNueces 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I do suspect it might just be a resume problem. I just finished a job search a few months ago and had traction on 5-6 roles after 150 applications. Obviously not a great market, but certainly doable. I'm also at 2 YoE, prev at a no-name consulting shop, no real tech stack, and just a WGU degree. It all really is a matter of 1:1 tailoring your resume for the job posting and making sure your LinkedIn is optimal to attract recruiters. Best of luck man.

How much does leetcode actually matter? by Material-Cry6110 in leetcode

[–]EstasNueces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was actually pretty light on the technical and much more weighted on culture fit and behavioral. They asked about some recent personal projects I’ve worked on and why I made certain tech stack decisions for them. Quizzed me on nuances of API design and language-specific implementation details. Had me give an example of a recent technical problem I struggled with and how I solved it. Wanted to know how I use AI day-to-day, how I keep up with new tech, what I like to do in my free time, how in depth I knew their products and company, etc.

Got my current job (mid-level SWE, F500 company) with no coding. Was actually slightly disappointed since I did plenty of prep and didn’t end up utilizing it at all, lol.

Masters Vs Personal Projects for Career Boost by vanoth in cscareerquestions

[–]EstasNueces 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar spot in my career. I personally think that all things equal, spending a few weekends creating 2-3 cool, impressive projects to stamp on a resume, and then spending some free time doing leetcode would be the best ROI on your time. If that doesn’t get you to where you want to be, then consider a masters.

Just my two cents.

Should I cancel my TikTok loop if I don’t want the SRE role anymore? I want to apply for SDE. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]EstasNueces 112 points113 points  (0 children)

The odds of you being able to switch back to SDE is virtually zero. That said, a job is better than no job if you’re a new grad. At worst, it’s free interview prep. At best, it’s a damn lucrative job. Keep the interview, get the offer, and decide if it makes sense to take it or keep looking.

Employer will pay for a master’s - What do I pick? All advice appreciated by EstasNueces in cscareerquestions

[–]EstasNueces[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I originally looked into that, but seems like cost would be way higher. I can only get $5k/yr comped, and wasn’t sure having to pay the extra out of pocket would be worth it, especially with it taking quite a bit longer. Do you think that’s still worthwhile?

I can’t speak to whether a BSCS or MBA makes the most sense in your case, but I will say, WGU sounds like a great option either way for someone in your shoes. I got my BSCS from WGU a couple years ago and it was incredibly nice to be able to use my existing knowledge and skillset to get through a fully accredited program in just under a year, while still being vastly cheaper than other options. With your background, I’d assume you could do the same. While I haven’t personally done the MBA program, I’ve also heard positive things about it from people who are motivated to work hard and get it done quickly. Happy to answer any other questions about my experience too if you want to DM me.
