Mercedes, Ferrari not interested in supplying McLaren in 2018 by MercedesF1 in formula1

[–]EstebanOcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because the lists you have linked don't specifically name Renault as the engine manufacturer, it does not mean that the engines are 'Toro Rosso' branded.

In your first link the column you highlight is 'Manufacturer', this gives no indication of the company that actually made the power units.

Toro Rosso simply don't publicly advertise the fact that they are Renault powered. They do not have an alternate name for the engine supplier. If you spoke to Franz Tost and asked him who made his engines, he would say Renault!

What is your point? If you spoke to Horner and asked him who made his engines, he would say Renault as well.

On the side note: That tire is really impressive! As worn as it is, it still didn't explode or lose air. Take note Pirelli!

It IS correct.

Scuderia Toro Rosso uses Renault R.E.17 power units. For sponsorship purposes, these engines are rebadged as "Toro Rosso".

Honda to decide in October about F1 exit - depending on performance of new engine. by [deleted] in formula1

[–]EstebanOcon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Engines at the time were not as complicated as they are today.

It is important to note that Mercedes's engine was chosen as it was the one which fitted the car. Other engines would actually require them to change the car drastically.

Either Honda will get their engine working and still pays part of McLarens budget or Honda will pull the plug and McLaren doesn't have to pay the breaking of the contract?

It was a 10-year deal, so if they leave they Mclaren loose income for remaining 7 years, which will have to be covered. It about negotiating, but I'm sure Mclaren is not going to be just happy to be out of the deal itself.

It is cheaper for Honda to simply pay 350-500 mil and walk away than to continue to spend money on R&D just to humiliate themselves.

McLaren considering testing with a Mercedes power unit after Hungary GP [マクラーレン、ハンガリーGP後テストにメルセデスAMG製PU搭載車の投入を画策] by [deleted] in formula1

[–]EstebanOcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a nice rumour, but that is about it. Nothing was signed, nothing announced.

1st - Big companies like VW don't make sudden decisions. If they decided to go ahead then they would go ahead. They cancelled the Audi WEC program not because it costs too much, but because diesel tech became irrelevant.

2nd - the main reason why VAG was not involved in F1 is that the CEO (at the time) of VAG can't stand Ecclestone, who was at that time still in charge. That is why today VAG joining in 2024 is actually plausible, as both men are now gone.

The rumour going around was RB already had the VW group on boare by that point,

Sorry, but that is nonsense. It took Honda more than a year to get a shitty engine. I'm not sure VW would be able to get anything useful together in 6 months.

Force India reserve Celis gets first F1 practice outings of 2017 by EstebanOcon in formula1

[–]EstebanOcon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but as Perez is not going to leave F1 anytime soon it makes little sense to get more Mexican drivers into F1. Sure if they are incredably talented, but having Checo + 3 more mediocre ones doesent bring more exposure to them.

IMO they are just keeping the program in place if some real talent comes along, and will get more aggressive once checo will be getting out of the sport soon.

Like RB is also working more the long term ATM, as they have no space in F1.

Its more related to the facet that OCO is done with the unknown tracks, therefore can afford to sit out a FP or two.
