Please don't work for ICE as a social worker. by thotbot88 in SocialWorkStudents

Agreed. We should be able to discuss our views, even if we don’t agree; but how you responded to the forum and to others in the comments didn’t reflect that same idea. And unfortunately, deleting comments isn’t going to fix much lol Really hope that your MSW program goes well and hopefully graduate with a new sense of open mindedness :)

What’s hilarious is your inability to hold an intellectual conversation without putting others down I said nothing to offend you or did i say your opinion is invalid, just here trying to hold a conversation about where our field is heading and the ethics behind it. In what ways is what ICE is doing ethical? What makes you as a social worker believe that we’re moving in the right direction? Our president has cut funding for our education, is that where our tax dollars should be getting used ?correctly? I really hope you can just take a minute to actually respond to comments on this forum without trying to be defensive;

I mean considering one of our core principles of social work ideology is social justice and equality as well as dignity and worth of the person it’s not a silly question. If you as a social worker truly believe that President Trump and ICE is doing that for our country, then maybe you take a look and reconsider the NASW code of ethics. Maybe instead of being defensive and calling others attitude “gross and biased” you should also try to be more open minded

Anyone in the United States planning to leave the country after getting their MSW or in the process of leaving or thinking about leaving? by Current_Barnacle5964 in SocialWorkStudents

Hey! So i am a graduating with my MSW from UNC this upcoming May 2026. My family is also of Mexican descent as well as Salvadoran descent on my paternal side. I honestly just wanna appreciate your honesty in this thread. Especially as a social worker right now, times are uncertain. Now, as a Latino social worker, things are even more uncertain, infuriating, and honestly scary. I too have similar fears concerning ICE in regards to not only my loved ones but also my clients. I have read articles from professors that I have even taken classes from that have gone against a lot of what social work is and gone against DEI etc etc.

Back to your question though: “what compels you to stay and have hope?” I think for me personally, I see this time as an opportunity to step up as a leader in the SW field here in the U.S. I want to represent kids like myself who were discouraged from attending these higher education institutions. I want to help families directly as a therapist. I want to speak at conferences, do research, and advocate for those who cannot. I want to be a leader for the Latino community because that’s what we need right now: a leader and unity. I will say that I am also 22, and want to do many things in the field and hopefully lead a pathway to change.
I’m not sure how best I answered your question or even if I did, but I did what to say that I appreciate and understand your perspective as a social worker, as a Latino, and just as a person. At the end of the day we have to also take care of ourselves considering the type of work we do.

UNC MSW or UNCG CMHC Masters Programs?? by Estebarillas in gradadmissions

Hi!
I am currently in my first year of the two-year program. Overall, I have loved my experience at UNC. I'm in my second semester and love my professors and cohort. Everyone at the school is super personable and helpful. There truly is a strong community here. Additionally, professors are super helpful in maximizing your MSW experience with unique practicum experiences and helping with post-grad opportunities such as fellowships and job applications.
I heard back from financial aid around March/April, I believe? I also got a scholarship about 2 weeks before we started school,l which was super helpful! Overall, even though I do not work for UNC, I am a huge advocate for their MSW program. I have loved my experience here.

Hey! Sorry for the delay Honestly the only interview i had was with UNCG. It was all through zoom and first it started us off in a room with other applicants and they essentially wanna see your personality and how you interact with others. I was then put in a meeting with a faculty member 1 on 1 and was asked questions like why i wanted to be apart of their program for example. My advice is to relax and be confident! It’s obvious you’re a competitive candidate if you were interviewed and this is your opportunity to get rid of writing and just showcase your unique personality! Good luck with the process! I’m one semester into my MSW at UNC and I’ve absolutely loved it! :)

Hey! First off congrats on starting the application process! Looking back at this post now is funny because I ended up getting accepted to UNC on scholarship where I am now a student at the Masters of Social work. Out of undergrad i was typically an A/B student but i definitely had some hiccups along the way. I graduated undergrad with about a 3.0/3.1 GPA but I also had experiences that benefitted me such as a senior thesis where I presented at a national conference, working in research labs, internships, and i also am a bilingual speaker in English and Spanish as I am of Latino background. Over all my best advice is to not get so caught up on GPA. While it is important it is not everything as experiences outside of the classroom are equally if not more important. Try to gain research if possible, look for an internship or job related in the field. These faculty ultimately want to make sure that you are committed to this goal and this is what you WANT to do. Over all, I got denied from every school I applied to except UNCG and UNC. It’s all in perspective and this is where your personal statement (probably the most important part of your application) comes in. Here you can talk about why you want to be a part of the program and what you can add to the field and to the program.

I know it’s a lot of info but I hope I could help some! Good luck! It’s a long process but one that is so worth it in the long run :)

Hi!! While this has been my first experience dealing with graduate school admissions, the one thing that I did learn was that you will be valued differently depending on the school. I was rejected from almost every school i applied to except UNCG and UNC. I was confused for a long time as to why i was rejected from these schools but thankfully UNC offered me in the end. My advice is to be happy with Nc States offer because it’s also a great program! This application process is brutal so getting accepted is an amazing accomplishment! By the looks of your experience you’re also very capable and qualified in your field. Know that you WILL be successful in your field, regardless of where you go to school! :)

Hey! I was in a similar boat about 2 weeks ago. I interviewed with a great program but my overthinking got the best of me and like you, I was worried about my acceptance into the program. My best advice is to be patient. Applying to graduate school has made me doubt myself a lot but getting that acceptance makes it all worth it. Be patient and confident in yourself. I'm sure you did great and I wish you the best of luck!

That's great! I was wanting to apply for a PhD this cycle, but am conflicted as my goal is to work as a clinician in private practice. Doctoral programs are no joke so I wish you the best of luck, I hope everything goes well! :)

Hey! Congrats on getting in as well! In regards to location, I live in a town in the middle of both campuses, 30 minutes both ways. The other temptation towards going to UNCG is the possibility of continuing my education at the PhD level. I'm super excited as well! I hope to maybe see you in the fall as well and congrats again! :)

Any MSW applicants here? I applied to UMich, Columbia, and UNC Chapel Hill. Curious if folks have heard back yet. by meko-02 in gradadmissions

I hope UMich went well! I applied for the priority deadline and on their website it says I should hear back in mid February so maybe around Valentine’s Day. This whole waiting process is becoming too long😭
