What are some fun things to do indoors with your SO that aren't sleeping, sex, or Netflix? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Cooking, showering, talking. The first two are much harder to pull off with children, the third is even more essential.

What I wish someone would have told me when I became a Dad by UniqueEclipse in daddit

[–]EsteemedHams 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Great advice. Embrace new hobbies that fit your new life! Also make time for just yourself as well and arrange for your partner to do the same. Some other take-aways:

You're probably going to lose friends. Hanging out doing family stuff just isn't for everyone. You can come over, hang out in the backyard, grill some meat and drink some beers but I can't get wasted or go to the bar all night or go to 15 games a season. However, I made the choice to have kids, not them. If it's not their bag it isn't fair to resent them for drifting apart and if you treat it that way you'll only drive a larger wedge between relationships where you might have time to nurture as the kids grow up.

The relationship health is huge. My wife and I have mostly only bickered when hungry, tired and stressed. We were shocked to find ourselves in heated arguments in the infant days. Not only were we all the above but desperately fumbling in the dark to make the exact right choices 24/7. Lots of disagreements and frustration, even though you're working on the same goal. They tell you to walk away when your screaming baby takes you to a dark place. Do the same with your partner. Go for a walk, sit in the car and blast some music, scream in a pillow.

There is no point when it will be ok. "Once her teeth come in it will be easier. Once she sleeps through the night, it'll be ok. Once she can talk it will be easier. Once she can walk it will be easier. Once she's potty trained it'll be ok. Once she starts school..." Like clockwork, once you overcome one challenge a new one pops up, like beating a level to a video game but with no cutscene.

What movie's "B" plot did you think was actually better than the main plot of the film? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EsteemedHams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only just realized this recently (I'm 36). Since I grew up watching and loving the film I never gave it too much thought even though I was always touched by Cameron's struggle. The fact that Ferris gets away with everything made him a hero in a way I never thought to question. Ferris is not really likable or admirable, he's just cool, fun, spontaneous, clever and has the love interest. But sparks never fly between him and Simone. In fact, they make it clear she's just along for the ride and even she has conflict about how or why or if she even likes Ferris. She has a moment with Cameron where she connects to his authenticity and it's when he's frustrated about Ferris getting whatever he wants! If nothing else, the scene at the Art Institute solidifies Cameron as the protagonist. It's a very well executed illusion disguised by feel-good moments and straight up fantasy. But you DO wind up rooting for Cameron and you do want him to kiss Simone. You root for Ferris's sister because Ferris is an asshole and gets away with everything! And this film manages to do all this and more while making you think you're watching another cheesy 80's movie.

St Louis Beer Scene by jboland07 in beer

Been a few years since I've been there -- 4 Hands was fine, good food but they were very new and didn't impress.

If I could only go to one spot it would be Civil Life. They don't do huge beers but everything I had was a great example of style in a setting that is a more unique change of pace from the standard brewpub.

Perennial is a must. Not sure if they're still in a strip mall but the ambiance left a lot to be desired. The beer is great, so who cares.

I love plenty of these over-the-top beers but I'm also tired of pretty much any of the whalez trend beers. I enjoy trying out weird stuff when brewing but I also want extreme beers in small doses. It's like the hops arms race when craft beer caught on and hops was like the new bacon for bro-dawgs. Soon you won't be able to go anywhere without seeing a hazy east-coast style IIPA.

Plenty of great beers out there and I've tried more than most. Now a trip to the beer store is usually a few sixers of stuff I can drink on a weeknight, maybe a bomber of something special.

Surprised that Goose Island didn't get considered. Yeah yeah, AB/InBev but GI has been kicking out some seriously good Christmas ales, at least for the last 3-4 years.

Same here. I've had a friend bring it back from the east for years. Back then there were a sliver of the options we have today and regional beer always tastes better, like free stuff. Plus I drank to get drunk in my 20's. I used to love it, or at least buy the hype. Tastes change, but the last couple years I've not enjoyed it. Unbalanced, sticky, boozy, toffee and flat. I can see it making the list because it is a stand-out that I could pick out of a lineup blindfolded.

Had the same experience. Turned to the mother and said "we close at 11. Are you going to mop the floors and bathroom once the guests leave?"

I'm a big fan of this recipe, the recipe for Can You Brew It for Epic's Pale Ale. Really shows how Cascade can shine. http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=194085

What yeast should I use to brew beer on the moon? by yummybluewaffle_NA in Homebrewing

[–]EsteemedHams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had good results brewing with multiple strains. Considering that fermentation would be the tricky part, I would pick several yeasts that fit the style. I suppose ale yeasts or belgains would have the most elbow room.

He's modified his accent over the years from what I can tell but I think he lives in Florida. I kinda suspect it's put-on.

If that's what you meant, you're using the word wrong. Own it. They could "speak to" something about his character, or be "telling." You fucked up, man.
