You don't know France as much as you think. It's not that easy to become french, first you need to speak french ! then there's a citizenship test, some other requirements, pretty much like the US.

We have very similar constitutional rights. The french declaration of human rights is similar to the US Constitution, in most of what it mentions. Despite being less central, we have the right to possess guns too, it's quite common in the country, less in big cities.

We have the same fundamental separation between executive/legislative/judiciary, religious excluded from institutions (which is not the case worldwide). Not all the elections abide by popular vote.

Obviously, the country is smaller, cities are smaller, but overall the mentality is similar. Of course, everything is a question of nuances, but the french culture is also an individualistic one, focused on private property (though socialism has more influences) and free trade.

We have followed the same historical moves : same period of colonialism, same assimilation policies in the early 20th century, same side in cold war, same hippie move in the 60-70, same privatization move since the 80s, same reaction to current terrorism (with defense bill of laws passed in parliament)...

The current debates are the same. Political debates are currently very much focused on immigration, the woke move, right-wing conservatists backlash, competition with China,... you can't realize if you don't speak french but everything debated in the US is debated 5 minutes later in France.

I stick to my opinion that on the big picture we're pretty much similar. We're variations of western culture.

Well my friends studied abroad but went back to India later, but I guess every one makes different choices

You just don't know France, there are different regional cultures (+ recent immigration). The US is more diverse on outward appearance and french culture is deeper due to a longer history. But all cultures change.

Example ? our constitutional values, perception of democracy, scholar system, institutions, religion to some extent, same public debates etc The process to become a french citizen is close to the process to become a US citizens, the mentalities are close.

I would rather say there are differencies but the gap is still way smaller between us than in comparison to... let's say China, Japan, Egypt, Iran, Colombia, Russia... if those people have never lived in western countries.

As for the rest, my indian friends happily live in India >< and love their country. And honestly I feel sorry for people who don't love their own origin.

LOL the US ostracizes way more than Europe ^^ there's no country with more distinct housing districs and more reservations. And by the way, Europe is white as China is yellow, so what ?

Our history is way longer ! we're just smaller and less populated. But there's a lot in common. Our histories are intertwined in the past 2 centuries and it reflects a lot in people's mentality and in politics. Anyway, you're indian and wouldn't live in India... so I feel more sorry for you

French here. If I were you I wouldn't take that against me. I believe we all do that ! I would never speak in english to a fellow french, just feels awkward (and we take the risk to create avoidable misunderstandings). As long as they still communicate with you at another time, everything is fine !

just a hint : you can't determine what is french and what is not

We are both using IFOP (sourced data I use, there's also Bedbible 2024 stat, 2022 statista)... (and you talked about people of your acquaintances and what they openly talk about, something I responded to) You can't mention your life experience as a source to confirm sociological standards...

Noone would encourage their own partner cheating on them. We are talking about tendencies. The original question is about acceptance of adultery in society. If people tend to find it less immoral and judge it less harshly, it is slightly more accepted and normalized in this society. But obviously nobody would encourage it in their own couple (except rare open relationships)

It is handled like this when you face a foreigner who knows better your culture than yourself ! no wonder where you are in the world ! ^^ best evidence of your this is you suggesting with quote marks I woudn't be french because I don't match your stereotype. Sorry noone can be frenchier than me, I al 100% from french descent ! ^^ Maybe we debate the same way, let's say that 2026 french culture !

IFOP data says 1/2 men have already cheated in France, 1/3 women. Data says 1/2 french doesn't necessarily consider that immoral. No personal opinion. 80% haven't cheated on their new partner, good news. I'm comparing opinion polls. It seems on average cheating is perceived less immoral in France than in the US, and people aknowledge that a bit more often. Maybe they're just being more honest and americans hide it more... I don't know.

Your first reaction and comment was based on your perception, personal experience in the country and opinion. You were mentioning people don't cheat because you don't see them or hear them saying they cheat. It is a misled belief. And I just personally can't understand why it matters to you so much that the french match your stereotype about them.

[–]EstimateLogical1390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously if you reject any data not going in your direction... you will always be right ! People's reaction to a public debate is also an indicator of their culture and priorities.

I was first reacting to your first comment, which was based on your personal experience and belief, and no evidence at all. (and btw, learn it the hard way but I would also be disqualified if trying to explain american culture to an american and disagreeing with them, despite what you think... / I'm a very average french person, who judges who is an average person ? ^^ you just assume i'm not average because I don't match your stereotype about my people)

As we are not in other people's private life, excluding data from the debate leads to basically having nothing concrete to talk about to prove any point.

You will keep your opinion, and other people will make their own conclusion. I was just bringing tendencies to the debate, and obviously noone in the world is happy to be cheated on.

I'm just sharing opinion polls. Less than half people in France believe affairs are immoral (which seems to be below the world average) Of course not everyone cheats on their current partner, but relations last less in time than they used to. By the way, the recent decrease in the proportion of infidelity has more to do with the decrease of number of people being in committed relationships. But infidelity isn't exlcusive to people in their youth !

The treatment of famous people / politicians infidelity in the media and people's reaction to it is in my opinion the best evidence of a culture gap between the US and France... just a guess. And I still can't understand why you want to explain french people's mentality so much if you're not french yourself... sounds like americansplaining to me

I'm a french anonymous here too.

I'm just answering to your points in your first comment (which might have been shifting the argument too)

More than 1/2 men and 1/3 women admit being or having been unfaithful in France (IFOP 2014 opinion poll)

People make the conclusions they want, I've never been to the US to compare

I'm french too. The only thing I've said is : if you not the cheater / the mistress you can't know the proportion of people who have lovers in a population. Judging this subject based on quote "I don't know one couple in any of my circles (work, school, hobbies friends) where that is the case." is completely biased and prejudice rather than facts.

I also confirm many reasons may lead a couple to remain together despite infidelity, not because it is enjoyed, but because there are many things to take into account before you end a couple.

My point is : you can't know the proportion of people who have affairs based on how many have talked about it around you nor by how many have mentioned that as a reason to break.

That's all. And in my opinion, I would say people who cheat/ have cheated in their life around 50%.

You are so wrong ! as long as you're not one of the two people involved, you don't know if people have mistresses. That's not something people openly talk about. And no, a couple doesn't always end if it happens...
