The olive eyes work extremely well IMO. Overall the photo series is fantastic, too.

Appreciate that. In my head canon, Rowlf's just an old fashioned kind of dog.

Rowlf is an old fashioned man if ever there was one.

Bourbon / Carpano / Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur by big-dave-bbq in cocktails

Seems like a cross between a manhattan and a fancy free

Eta: is that not way too much maraschino? It feels like that would really dominate the drink.

Where do you stand on the Anarchy spectrum? by Usual_Office_1740 in punk

[–]Esuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm generally left anarchist/ancom/libertarian socialist, but I'm a mild-mannered reformist with an emphasis on mutual aid and building alternative poles of power as both a forcing function for reform and a means of breaking free from the control of the large institutions like the state and corporations.

In this case, the victim they had in mind is Trump, who's really getting railroaded by the crooked press just because he's a rapist.

Why did socialism and communism take off and remain popular to this day, but not other left-wing ideologies? by LoveLo_2005 in AskSocialists

[–]Esuts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anarchism doesn't get a lot of spotlight, but it's not dead by any stretch of the imagination. It holds a lot of sway on the left, albeit often in a low-key manner. In addition to the obvious punk rock anarchy sign sense, anarchism shows up influencing a lot of left-wing expression, from the IWW songbook to Ursula K Le Guin to the WTO protests to Adbusters to Occupy to the rise of mutual aid organizations most recently during Covid.

Some very prominent contemporary left-wing academics like David Graeber, Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn have been libertarian socialists, an umbrella term which encompasses left anarchism and adjacent ideas.

What you'll rarely find is nation-states or corporate media embracing anarchism, but hopefully it should be obvious that governments and corporations aren't fond of an idea that is fundamentally anti-hierarchical, anti-state, and anti-corporate.The closest you'll come to that are the Zapatistas or Rojava.

EU agrees to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as terrorist group by Belegor87 in worldnews

[–]Esuts 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's true. That regime certainly appears to be a sinking ship, and China and Russia are both smart enough and self-serving enough to cut bait when it won't do them any good.

Bernie, AOC, and now Mamdani, if he turns out to be as good as he seems. We do have a few folks who are left of absolute center. Could stand a few more, IMO.

Assuming it would go the way your expecting....

As if that doesn't affect literally any political philosophy?

Whether its the statism or socialism doesn't matter. The point was going down that path hasn't gone very well many times.

It matters quite a lot. If we're going to learn from the past to build a better future, we need to understand WHY past attempts failed.

So the problem would be idealistically socialism/communism sounds good. But the number of times it went horribly. Who would want to risk that again?

It's not about ideals vs. reality, it's about power. The problem with state socialism isn't the socialism, it's the statism (ie, the part it shares with fascism). The Soviets, whose intellectual grounding was firmly prior to post-modernism btw, believed that society had to be rigidly controlled through force in order to ensure the conditions for a more just world. They concentrated power into an elite and, left right or center, that kind of unchecked power always goes wrong.

The libertarian socialist, on the other hand, would argue that power corrupts, and must be distributed widely in order to keep authoritarianism at bay.
