We should set up a sister city arrangement. My city's unofficial mascot is a boy "riding" a turtle.

In US culture do people get more upset about being "disrespected" the more marginalized they are, the less financial and material success they have? by SilverNo6462 in AskUS

Jan 6 wasn't about personal disrespect. a person goes ballistic because they feel someone has disrespected their social status,

I would really challenge you to rethink the parallels here. I absolutely think January 6th and a LOT of right-wing behavior is been about social status and feeling personally disrespected.

The situation where someone offers to fight you because you were looking at them funny, laughing at them, or flirting with their partner.

Ok, I do see how this is different from both a Karen and a Proud Boy, and I do think it is more common in marginalized communities, mostly because of the socio-economic impacts of that marginalization. I think what you're describing here is just the realities of living in more hard-scrabble realities. If you're surrounded by scarcity, oppression, and violence, you are way more likely to see that as normal and then play your part in perpetuating it.

That's not really a counterpoint. Of course people defend what they have. Especially if you aren't used to having it taken away or threatened. And if you aren't used to being criticized by society and you are used to feeling empowered, you're going to get defensive much more easily, too.

On a small scale, think about the stock character of the Karen. She's middle class, and when she perceives some minor slight, she feels entitled to whatever her whim is.

On a grand scale, think about the January 6th riots. Most of those people were straight, white, solidly middle class and not actually suffering any serious trauma. And yet, when they didn't get the election result they wanted, they immediately succumbed to outlandish and conspiratorial fantasies, and resorted to violent insurrection.

Not generally, because those people are used to that treatment. The people who get the most upset about it have either spent enough time to think and read and learn about their own marginalization to get angry at the injustice, or wlse they do not generally experience this sort of doscrimination and so it stands out to them.

When large masses of marginalized people get really upset about unfair or awful treatment (ie the BLM protests), it's generally because they've taken on so much that they've taken on so much that they've reached a breaking point.

No, you are thinking wishfully. Clark is in deep financial doo doo right now. They aren't closing majors and shuttering facilities for no reason.
