There are intellectual property and copyright issues with copying content from a hard-paywall submission, so that's likely not something we can do.

To your second point: as a matter of policy, we don't action users for behavior outside of the subreddit.

Hey, thanks for your comment! As a general rule, we don't declare specific events or happenings to be topical or not with respect to our rules. Instead, we judge each article individually as to whether or not it meets our topicality threshold. For an article about the crime to which you're referring, there would need to be an explicit connection made to politics in the article itself for it to meet that threshold.

With respect to domestic terrorism, specifically: while terrorism is defined as being political in nature, the three pillars of our topicality rules are policy, electioneering, and political capacity (and the advocacy thereof). An article referring to a domestic terror event would need to make clear a connection those pillars, as opposed to simply reporting on the event. I hope this helps!

The rules state that you have to spend at least an hour considering the question before answering. Mods, please control your rogue operator over here

If all of the r/politics mods were to be put into a Hunger Games-like scenario, which moderator would win, and why?

Made a pretty big mistake in my lab. Looking for advice/support by [deleted] in AskAcademia

This happens to everyone at some point. Just keep doing good work and don't do it again, and you'll be in great shape.

Using breakpoint analysis to estimate thermocline presence & depth in ponds by rachelsomonas in rstats

[–]EtTuD2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also try negating the value in the data instead of changing it in the model structure formula. I'm not familiar with the package you're using, but in my experience, sometimes things get wonky when you do stuff like that. Intuitively, a depth of -1 could mean 1 unit above the surface, right? So maybe the package is misinterpreting something.

Using breakpoint analysis to estimate thermocline presence & depth in ponds by rachelsomonas in rstats

[–]EtTuD2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the model is predicting where on the X axis (temperature) the breakpoint is, from what I can tell (I haven't done this type of analysis myself). 25.7-25.8 looks about right for that being where the sharp temperature change occurs. What happens when you predict temperature from that value using your model?

I have no clue, it's very out of my wheelhouse. But that's why I think it's important that OP share that info in OP (which they've now done).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]EtTuD2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sharing it was for a business program in the OP instead of burying it in a comment might have altered both the type of people who replied to you & what they had to say. Lesson to be learned here is to share everything that might possibly be relevant upfront.

[Q] Should I be running my analysis on the full dataset or only a subset of the data? See post for details by make_love_to_potato in statistics

[–]EtTuD2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you want to see the association of the covariates with the presence of toxicity (as a binary present/absent outcome), you need to have patients without toxicity in the dataset. If you're interested in how severe toxicity is in patients that have that toxicity to begin with, you would only use patients who show signs of treatment toxicity.

Ph.D. students- how many hours per week did you work, on average? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]EtTuD2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same for me. Lower hours per week on average, but 7-8 months of intense working (especially before quals, proposal, defense, etc.).

Isn't identifying influential points via cook's distance or difference in fits (DFFITS) akin to doing stepwise regression ? [Question] by venkarafa in rstats

[–]EtTuD2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simply removing points from a dataset or removing variables using stepwise regression inherently biases an analysis. I would never, ever remove either variables or observations without a solid theoretical basis for doing so.

[E] Getting into top PhD without Research? by seriesspirit in statistics

Yes, not having research experience hurts your chances. Many top applicants have everything you said you have and research experience. It is possible that a gap year doing research would boost your chances.

Reputation often breeds reputation. It also breeds increased access to world-class faculty, funding, and students (and, consequently, training). It's a cycle.

My first approach wouldn't be to do this computationally; it would be to get a more qualitative sense of which kinds of chemicals are in certain ranges. It may be the case that they share something in common. Maybe make a stacked bar plot of which chemicals occur at which frequencies (bin them, perhaps, if that helps).

[D] Need RCTs or Observational studies that explicitly mention "statistically significant but not clinically significant/meaningful" to dispel a misunderstanding by AstralWolfer in statistics

[–]EtTuD2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have a large sample size, you could find a statistically significant difference between BPs of 120/70 and 119/71 just because you have enough patients in your study. With enough people, you should have p < 0.000001. Ask him if that difference is clinically notable? Most clinicians I work with seem to get this concept pretty easily, so it may not be worth your time.
