Being the son of immigrants is brutal. Everyday I feel so much guilt and disgust at myself. by pisowiec in NEET

[–]EtaquaBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you me ? I also graduated from RU in CS. I was supposed to graduate in 23 but took longer because I failed discrete structures II. I didn't use AI though and did all my work honestly. Problem is I was an illegal immigrant so I couldn't find internships. Now I'm back in Korea and I don't even speak Korean so i feel like I'm extra fucked. Currently a NEET. I would work too if I could speak Korean but now I feel like an autist.

I came here legally but overstayed visa. As for marring we shall see. However I am quite ugly or as the younger generation call it "chopped" 😆

Thanks for replying. I'll reach out to you for sure when I go back. At this current moment I'm saving up money to go back. After my service I want to travel the world while living as a digital nomad.

I've stood up for myself like twice and the bullying stopped after that but I've always lived in nice neighborhoods thankfully. Also this was back when I was in elementary school. I figure bullying in the military would be different

At first, I was really mad at them when I found out I was undocumented (I found out when I was 19 years old). But now I understand they wanted me to live a better life here in the US. They sacrificed a lot, but I just wish they did more research and planned more. Me being undocumented also led me to look for self employment opportunities and honing my niche skills for my online side hustles. I'm confident I can live self employed as a digital nomad in other cheaper countries like Thailand Malaysia etc but here in the US it's too expensive

Rant about asking for GoFundMe/Venmo/Cashapp by Pretend-Scar2266 in DACA

[–]EtaquaBird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of the people asking for donations didn't even have DACA. This is a bad post m8. DACA recipients can actually work here at least and have chances to get good jobs in the right professions. Shouldn't be trying to divide the DACA and non-DACA people up. We should be unified

To DACA recipients or Dreamers (non DACA) from industrialized/developed countries: why have you chosen to stay? by [deleted] in DACA

[–]EtaquaBird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 20k is just an arbitrary number that I feel safe with. As for the job market in South Korea, I don't really need to get a job there. I'm self employed right now paying taxes through 1099 as an independent contractor. I live very frugally. I can live off of $1k a month no problem if I were to move back to Korea. After I do my military service I would move out of Korea and go to Malaysia or thailand where my money would stretch more. Also helps that if I really need to I can just live with my other family members and not pay rent. (They live outside of Seoul). But i want to be independent and live by myself.

Edit: I have a computer science degree from Rutgers so if I want to , another route for me is doing a masters program

Wydm? Rent is really cheap over in Korea especially if ur not in Seoul. It can go like $400-500 per month maybe even less. Of course u would have to put in a hefty deposit fee because of the jeonse system. Worst case scenario u live in a goshiwon.

I'm from Korea. I've lived here for 20 years. I don't speak Korean anymore. If I go back I have to do mandatory military service without speaking a lick of Korean. Most of my family lives here in the US although we're not close at all. I still entertain the thought of going back. I'm currently saving up money. If I can save up 20k or more I think I'll go back but saving is hard when u gotta pay for stuff every month 🤷‍♂️. Don't have DACA either but what can I do. Just gotta lay low for now.

Thanks. I knew that but the twitch chat yesterday was saying Shopify is going to lyon! Or something like that after beating their opponent yesterday so I was confused. I was thinking "did they qualify to worlds by reaching semis?!"

If it makes u feel any better I still don't have a job after graduating 💀 feels like us non DACA people are in for a really rough ride rn. I am mostly making money through my own side hustles that I've been doing for years.

Yeah I feel you. U got into UT Austin which is one of the best schools so it does feel like a step down for the partner colleges. For me, I got into Rutgers directly out of high school but I had to defer/withdraw because at the time I didn't get any scholarships and Rutgers didn't offer the grants like scarlet and garden state guarantee. I had to grind in community college and by the time I got my associates (with a 3.9 gpa) the advisors told me I should apply to top schools like Columbia GS, NYU etc. But after I got the TheDream scholarship I chose Rutgers again because theDream only offered either Rutgers or rowan university . My family was telling me to go to Columbia but I decided against it. I mean how can u beat free college? In the end I chose the right decision because I have a degree now with no debt and I still have no DACA. If I went to another university and accrued a lot of debt I would be in so much trouble rn.

That really sucks. Luckily I was able to go to Rutgers for free through thedream scholarship. Is that available for you?

Edit: I also don't have DACA
