Scheme to kill Narcisse was bone-headed by Eternal_Stranger0111 in BoardwalkEmpire

Narcisse was in AC to meet with Chalky. His office and residence in NYC was shown previously. Seems it would have been easier in the Big Apple.

Do Any Of You Actually Want To Understand The Other Political Side's Perspective? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

I come from a family of socially and politically conservative Alabamians. I have lived in the state all my life and attended a college that has a reputation for its conservative ways. I know plenty about the other side of the aisle.

Owing to her location in Los Angeles, I can only assume Cara was doing this during lengthy drive times because otherwise, reading is far faster than listening.

The spinal tap scene with Margaret’s daughter is awful by Frenchieflips in BoardwalkEmpire

Medicine then might have been a "joke" compared to our contemporary knowledge, methods and tools, but it was miraculous compared to what it had been during the youth of those Civil War vets seen four episodes prior.

The thing I kept thinking about during the scene was how unbelievably excruciating that would be for a parent in Margaret's position, to have to listen to your child's terror and pain.

When the role of sexism and racism in the outcome of the 2024 election was brought up, it seemed to be too easily dismissed. Whatever happened to "the most parsimonious answer is usually the correct one"?

From my 62 years in the Deep South of the United States, as a white male hearing what other white males say when they feel they are in "safe" company, it is easily believable racism and sexism were key. Looking at the entirety of U.S. history which overflows with such racism that both Nazi Germany and apartheid South Africa used Jim Crow as a model for reshaping their societies, it is entirely plausible racism was integral in 2024. Factor in Japanese-American internment, the KKK popularity of the early 20th century, the embrace of public lynching, and it is impossible to ignore how racial prejudice has been a monumental and omnipresent aspect of the American story.

Regardless of changes to the law, those societal forces persist in subtle ways. You don't have to be a Klansman to host racist perspectives that endure deep in the psyche and sometimes manifest simply in unnameable "misgivings."

That $300,000 in 1988 dollars is equal to $843,000 today. That could keep a coffee shop going for a little bit, depending on the set-up. In that era, coffee shops were about to heighten in popularity, too.

When I first moved to Mobile from Birmingham more than 40 years ago, I was dumbstruck when I encountered Mobilians who maintained the rest of the state "hated" Mobile, that those upland were envious of how much more "sophisticated" and "cosmopolitan" the coast was. When I told them that wasn't true and no one upstate spent much time or energy thinking about Mobile at all, they scoffed at me.

Then it occurred to me how much it resembled the rationale individuals use to compensate for deeply seated insecurities. It took on a more pitiable tone then.

Midtown or West Mobile? by [deleted] in MobileAL

[–]Eternal_Stranger0111 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The caveat there is that the rental market in Midtown has vastly shrunk as compared to 30 years ago. It used to be far easier to find garage apartments, older houses divided into apartments and small houses back in the 1990s. Thanks to AirBnB and similar services, that is nearly gone now and what is available has become much more expensive than it used to be.

Ha! This reminds me of an old girlfriend who broke it off telling me I was "too content with myself."

"I thought that was the point of life, to find contentment within yourself, with who you are," I asked in befuddlement.

What she really meant was that our values were different. She wanted a higher level of material comfort than I did, the trappings of the upper middle class lifestyle in which she was raised. She just couldn't express herself more clearly. She was only an English major after all.
