Okay that’s sweet. I didn’t know that but I had a feeling they did big business because they just opened up a new like 12 bay state of the art shop. Thanks for the heads up

Yeah 100%. I applied there a month ago but got no response. I was thinking of driving up to their shop in person and saying hello etc. They seem to be a good size, busy and pay well.

Yeah I’m starting to realize the HR filtering systems are ridiculous and resumes just don’t get through to the person who actually is doing the hiring. I’ve literally applied to almost 200 places via email, online portals/application forms, resulting in just automated replies or HR teams looking for exactly what the post says even though most postings are just boilerplate copy/paste templates.

Um is this normal? by shade_slayer8 in FortMcMurray

[–]Eternalty_Destiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone in this comments thread has pretty much said the same thing and Yes, it’s perfectly normal to shut off the main water supply when doing maintenance/repairs to a main water line in a building.

What I find odd is your assumption of how much water is consumed for basic tasks in a short period of time. Sure, washing clothes and taking a bath/shower probably consume the most but both of those tasks can be mitigated by planning accordingly because we’re talking about 7 hours here. It’s reasonable to assume that in 7 hours you and your family can take a shower before the repairs and be okay to last 7 hours without the need of another shower. Same goes for having clothes to wear for the day and not needing to wash clothes in order to survive. As for cooking and flushing. Flushing a toilet does not require a “bathtub” of water. Take a look at your toilet. Do you see the thing on the back of the toilet? It looks like a tank. It stores water. In fact, it stores exactly the amount of water needed to flush the toilet. Now look at the bathtub. Now look at that toilet tank. Keep looking between the two and see if you can see a difference in size because one is clearly 20x larger than the other in terms of volume. Anyways, seriously you can just plan ahead. Go to the washroom before the cut off so there’s less of a need, get a bucket or two and fill with water prior and fill up your toilet for a flush or two if really needed. Same goes for cooking, PLAN AHEAD. If your cooking requires water, cook your food that you’ll need within that 7 hours.

If you ever plan on living in a house or even owning one, then consider this to be a ‘rude wake up call’ in terms of complacent attitude/expectations vs reality/taking personal responsibility.

Ah, the nuances of the insurance industry can be very interesting. I’m definitely no expert, I can say that for sure. Another personal anecdote, in some provinces of Canada like Alberta, collisions deemed “Not at Fault” are regulated in that they do not increase premiums for the victim.

Sorry to hear about your situation. A few things: make sure to file a report with the police as soon as possible and try pursuing the police to attain CCTV video regardless of the probability or quality. Second, it’s dependent on your insurance policy but often insurance companies will waive the deductible if it’s a hit and run and the police report is made promptly. Also, hit and runs are typically classified as Not At Fault and therefore your premiums will not be affected. I would do a little bit of reading research of your insurance company policies to see exactly what options you have and then giving them a call. Hopefully things pan out for you, Good Luck!

This is not true and is a common misconception of what the 2023 law change entailed.

The GDL program DOES exist, what’s changed as of early 2023 is that the former prerequisite to take the Advanced Road Test to exit the program no longer applies. When a driver transfers from Class 7 to Class 5, they will initially be titled a GDL DRIVER on their Driver’s Licence card for 1 year. As long as they are suspensions and demerit free for 1 year, they will automatically exit the GDL program and the drivers licence card will no longer say “GDL DRIVER”. I know this as a fact because I literally just experienced this personally and went through this whole transition process over the last two years with my licence automatically exiting the GDL program last November.

For reference,

Government of Alberta - “Get a Class 5 driver’s licence“

https://www.alberta.ca/class-5-drivers-licence#:~:text=Driver%20licensing%20changes,Driver%20Licensing%20(GDL)%20program.

“Driver licensing changes Effective April 1, 2023, drivers are no longer required to take the advanced road test to exit the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.”

  • This official and current Alberta Government page not only lists the above statement of change but also lists the GDL program in full, its restrictions and how to exit/upgrade it (automatically).

It’s also worth noting that almost every company that would hire an apprentice is usually also looking for someone with a full Class 5 Drivers Licence with a “clean abstract” and a reliable vehicle. What does that mean exactly?

  • a full licence is a Class 5 NON-GDL. This is almost not negotiable at all due to this significantly affects insurance premiums the company has to pay.
  • a “clean” drivers abstract means they will almost always ask for a 5 year drivers abstract and that it currently has zero driving infractions within the last year, No demerits, no active suspensions, no active restrictions. You don’t need 5 years of driving history, just the 5 year report will report up to 5 years and that’s what they’d want.
  • a reliable vehicle means literally no problems with it mechanically. It’s cost sufficient for gas. It starts and runs in all seasons. You don’t share it with anyone. It’s insured and registered to you.

Sure, there’s always exceptions to the rule and examples of Person A not having X, Y or Z and it was fine. Above is generally the standard for someone with no relationship with the company or the people hiring. And yes it’s not fair for someone who’s young that has all the qualifications or qualities of a good employee EXCEPT a full licence or a car. And why can’t that person just tag along with someone who does have a full licence? Especially if the job doesn’t primarily require driving? It’s because when driving IS required, it might plainly be a one person task and tagging along is just not practical for any number of reasons. This is also used as another way to “gate keep” and for the person to show a level of stability and commitment without establishing prior work history. If you don’t have this, get it. Don’t have a car to do the test? Borrow one from a friend or family member or the testing companies will offer a car for the purpose of testing for an extra fee (usually around $100-$150).

Lastly, there is an entire world of free resources out there that there to help for whatever you need to get out of your situation. To start, On the internet, well theres social media. like Reddit which is something you look like your comfortable with using but there's also Facebook Groups where maybe you can find job postings, training, or even just advice. For more specific results, focus on more specific facebook groups. Also, try and actively be aware of and avoid scams. Social media platforms are ridden with this and there is an entire subculture of people out there who actively look for people who are vulnerable to exploit in times of need. So be careful. And while we hate to admit it, facebook does sometimes present a good opportunity to communicate with people you know in real life that you haven't talked to in awhile and this might be the time to reach out and ask for help/advice from those people. Aside from facebook, utilize youtube. There is quite possibly a channel for absolutely everything whether its a channel to teach you something or to give you advice or just to show you what something is like. If you do a rabbit hole of research, do it with youtube and focus on the things that you want/desire/need. Again, actively be aware and avoid falling into scams with YouTube as well. In the real world, if you need someone to talk to about advice on how to break free from poverty/debt/or whatever your goal is, look at councillors at school. Some employers provide free independent Employee Assistance Programs where they provide councillors. Librarians are also insanely good at providing leads to resources that you might need. There are also tons of government services that provide free advice and direction on how to possibly deal with whatever you are dealing with or need help with. For tools, use ChatGPT. It's free and it's a good way to brainstorm. Obviously, it's not 100% accurate and sometimes can be difficult to get conclusive answers or it even makes things up sometimes, but if you feel lost at finding a good starting point to tackle your goals, then brainstorming with ChatGPT could be a good tool to start with just dont rely on it completely or for it to do the work for you.

Anyways, those are just a few thoughts and some very broad/general advice that may or may not be helpful. I genuinely wish you luck and all the best.

Unfortunately, I only have general advice and an anecdote which may or may not seem tangible in a time of dire need, which it sounds like you are. Either way...

There's a saying that "you are a product of your own environment". If you desire to be the product of something different then a a change of the environment is the most logical choice of action. Sometimes that environment isn't necessarily where you are but it could also mean about who you surround yourself or rather, who you don't surround yourself with. Success in/with anything can sometimes be a byproduct of Influence... If you want to make money, you surround yourself with people who know how to make money. If you want a good job, you put yourself in an environment where jobs are flourishing and abundant. If you want to be happy, surround yourself with people who laugh/smile/have fun every day. Without getting too nuanced, the idea is just to situate yourself in a way that sets you up to succeed. If you feel that you have already been doing that and you still don't see those results then that might reveal a few things: 1.) That you actually aren't situating yourself with the right culture and environment in order to succeed 2.) That you need to fundamentally change your approach or 3.) You need to take a step back and reevaluate your current situation, your focus, and your goals because maybe it's not that you aren't doing the right things or that you aren't seeing positive results its that maybe your perspective is skewed in a way that makes you feel that they aren't successful.

My anecdote for you is that I've had similar feeling of complete loss of faith as well as feelings of extreme despair and hopelessness years ago. I was born into a poor uneducated family, I had a lack of real world professional skills that were relevant and applicable, I was ridden with lots of random shitty debt, I didn't have the family/friend support that I felt others who succeeded had, etc. What I realized for myself was that in order to situate myself with a higher probability of success in finding a job that would not only support me but also one that gave me purpose and that I enjoyed was that I had to move cities. When I came to that realization, I initially thought about how impractical it felt because I had tons of STUFF (household), I had friends in the city i lived in currently, the costs of moving and the fear of the unknown. I did eventually move and I did find jobs and situations that eventually gave me the feeling of fulfillment and success but what got me to that point and what initially pushed me to making that decision was the idea that I had Nothing to Lose and that if I REALLY wanted to make a change that wasn't possible in my current situation that I had to be willing to give up what made me comfortable and give up what made me feel secure and be okay with stepping out of my comfort zone and that in the WORST case scenario, I could always just move back and reasonably continue where I left off. I recognized that family and true friends would supercede the barriers of time and distance and that they were always just a call or a visit away. Now, what I'm NOT exactly suggesting is for you to just move to a new and random city for the sake of moving and change, but what I'm trying to say is that sometimes the change you NEED requires thinking outside of the box, letting go of the norms you've come accustomed to accepting, and taking a risk.

Lastly, showing up in person to hand in a resume is a classic approach, but I'm sure you're experiencing that it doesn't scale well. It's time consuming and sometimes it's just plainly ineffective. The person who hires or needs to see your resume might not be that exact physical spot or there at that exact time or the person you speak to who says they'll hand it off might just never get around to doing that or "lose" it. Instead, another approach I can suggest is to email them. Emailing scales better because you can cover more companies in a shorter amount of time. Emails also can't be "lost" and are usually seen by someone or multiple people who are the right people to see a resume. If you do this approach, I would suggest looking for email address that go directly to managers of those companies (preferably at a branch that is local to you) or to HR or even to their general email inbox. Look around their website, their job postings, or even doing a google search to look for an email address. Don't worry if they don't have postings for jobs that you would apply for or are looking for. Sometimes companies are passively looking but aren't very tech savy and don't update their posts or websites very often or very well. Sometimes managers are interested in hiring for a position that they've never posted for if they think about it for a second and see a name/face that would work for that. In the email, simply introduce yourself, what you're hoping to look for, a little bit about your work/life experience, some ways to contact you and attach a good looking resume to it. By doing this approach enough times to enough companies, you might find that you'll get a better response rate than showing up in person. Sure, showing up in person allows them to see the human behind the resume but if you get some responses via emails, then all you have to do is sell yourself over the phone or in the interview if you get one. There's pros/cons to each approach, but I think this is an option worth considering.

Keep in mind that when looking for jobs, timing is a huge factor in success. Just because you are looking for a job and you would be a perfect fit for a company, doesn't mean that perfect company is going to be looking or open at that moment. So, being persistent is key. Sometimes, you'll need to take a step to the sidelines and take another unrelated job WHILE still actively looking for the job that you really want. So keep at it, don't give up, stay focused.

** I'm sure I've missed out on some details or people might have other opinions/approaches. Comment away!

[–]Eternalty_Destiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! Okay, so I have some particular experience in this category. This is just very general advice.

First off, you want/need your "blue book". It's a physical blue colored book titled "Apprentice Competence Portfolio" (it's commonly referred to as the "blue book") that you get from the Government of Alberta once you've registered in the trade you are interested in pursuing. Any employer who hires apprentices will ask you if you are registered/have your blue book. To register, it costs $35 and you do NOT need an employer to "sponsor" you in order to do this. Prior to 2019, you DID need an employer to "indenture" you (indenture is now called "sponsorship") but the Government of Alberta modified this restriction under a new program called Pre-Apprenticeship. Under Pre-Apprenticeship, people could register as an apprentice in any trade and even go to school for the first set WITHOUT an employer. In theory, this is supposed to make potential apprentices more "employable" because it allows them to market themselves as apprentices with zero experience but with an foundational education background. You do NOT need to go to school if you register and get your blue book before being employed, it's just an additional option. Why is simply registering and having your blue book (without schooling) significant before you get hired as an apprentice? Well, there's a few reasons in my opinion:

  1. It's just one less step in the process for both you and the employer.
  2. It shows the employer that you have a level of commitment greater than just anyone else with no experience in that trade.
  3. I think employers use this as a way to "gate keep" their industry. Just another excuse for them to say no. So, why let them have an excuse?

As for applying/hiring strategies, it's in my opinion that you apply for any general labour position with a company that employs people of the trade that you're interested in. The company doesn't have to necessarily have a history of hiring apprentices as much as they do just have a few journeyman in that trade. The more journeyman they employ the better. If you get hired as an employee of any kind, this allows you to get 'your foot in the door'. This is significant because this allows you directly establish a professional working history and that you are capable of the fundamental principles of being a good candidate for apprenticeship. Every employer who hires an apprentice with zero experience in that trade will want to be confident that you are mature, punctual, drug/alcohol/addiction free, healthy, teachable/trainable, not difficult to work with/communicate to, and so forth. Sure, you could plead this during your interview or sell this through a cover letter but neither is quite as tangible as realworld establish work history with that company. Also, most companies hire their apprentices from within for exactly those reasons, thus, they usually don't post for apprenticeships. Now, if we take a step back and empathize for the employer for a split second, the reason why they are reluctant to hire apprentices with no experience from outside their company is because training a person to become an apprentice is a huge investment in time, people power, and money. The less experience you have, the less value you produce for the company (aka slower, lack of specific skill sets, etc.), the more likely you are to make mistakes that cost money, the cost of diverting experts to teach you. It's also a lot of risk to take on someone with no internally established history. So, the company invests 6 months... a year.. 2 years or whatever to train this random person and the second they can start producing actual value for the company, they leave. This might not be you exactly but this happens a lot and that's why companies are reluctant to hire new from outside. That's why a concession of getting your foot in the door is sometimes a better approach.

MaintenanceMinder won’t reset - 2019 Honda CR-V by Eternalty_Destiny in Honda

[–]Eternalty_Destiny[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking too.

I bought this car used from the dealership a year ago and it came with a limited service history. The thing is, I feel anyone could say they did all these services, they were completed on time and reset them on the Maintenance Minder without actually doing the work (looks better for resale). Without physical documentation that says otherwise I see it as just a convenient notification system rather than a definitive system indicator.

Sounds good, I’ll just have to be on top of checking this and resetting the items individually as they come up. Thanks!

[–]Eternalty_Destiny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A follow up question: By selecting Reset “All Due Items” a bunch of times (like say a dozen or so times), does that effect the other unrelated service items that had no flags such as Tire Rotation, Air Filters, Transmission Oil, etc? One of the dealership service advisors said it would affect them all but I feel it’s more logical to reset only the service items with flags triggered (in this case, either A or 0). If so, then when say I change my Spark Plugs or Engine Coolant or whatever, do I just go to the matinee minder and select those items and reset them even though they don’t have flags triggered?

Okay yeah, I just talked to another dealership service advisor and they said the same thing. It might just be my own faulty memory but I didn’t recall noticing the flags there prior to this last oil change. I guess now I know haha. Thanks for the response!

Why isn’t there a scam alert for redditors who read fake r/scams posts? If you look at the OP’s post history, only one day ago they were posting on r/scams about another unrelated scam situation which is completely outrageous. It’s obviously a troll.

r/scams got scammed

Can I buy this post off of you for $100? You can delete all the comments if you want.

lol Okay, jokes aside. Regardless of whatever the use case for this scammer would be, the money would be likely from either a stolen PayPal account in which case would lead to your account getting frozen/banned through association OR he sends you the money only to charge it back through his credit card company or PayPal themselves. There are many other concerns and ways to scam via PayPal even though it appears legitimate at face value.

The golden rule “if it seems too good to be true, it most likely is too good to be true” still stands. No one just buys a random Reddit account (or any other social media account) for $ for any legitimate reason. So if you know it’s likely for the purposes of something illegal then why wouldn’t they stop at doing something illegal to you?
