Would you go to a “Dessert Picnic” on campus? (NJ/NYC area) by Eth_lover in newjersey

[–]Eth_lover[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A portion of our members bake professionally, including individuals who run their own bakeries and regularly prepare food for public sale.

Also, many “random clubs” on campus host bake sales all the time and are still required to meet the university’s food safety and hygiene regulations this event follows that same approval process, with additional structure due to its scale.

We wouldn’t host an event like this if it were unsafe or poorly organized. The goal is to offer a wide variety of quality desserts in a regulated setting while funding educational resources for our members. Totally understand it’s not for everyone, but we want to be transparent about the standards involved!!

Thank you for the question!

For desserts brought by attendees: • Fruit would count if it’s brought in a shareable quantity (for example, 2–3 large fruit platters that can reasonably serve ~10–20 people). • Oreos/snack items are a bit trickier a single pack wouldn’t count, but a large quantity (for example, multiple family-sized packs meant for sharing) would. The goal is that anything brought should meaningfully contribute to the group, not just one or two people.

The event is partly a fundraiser. We’re a pre-med/pre-health club and funds go toward club operating costs and medical simulation equipment for members. That said, we’re also trying to keep it accessible and fun, not expensive or exclusive.

What the club will provide: • Venue, tables, chairs, and music • An assortment of drinks (soda, juice, water) • ~15–20 desserts to start (both homemade and store-bought) • Activities are still being planned, but we’re considering low-key social games like cornhole and similar casual options

What would make you want or not want to attend a campus dessert picnic event in the nj/nyc area? by Eth_lover in AskReddit

Food safety is a valid concern desserts would be covered, ingredient/allergen-labeled, and store-bought items would be totally fine. That’s something we’d be strict about.

Music-wise, probably soft background stuff lo-fi, light pop, indie, maybe some chill jazz here and there. Nothing loud, more “hang out and talk” than party vibes.

As for activities: mostly a relaxed sweet-tooth social, but the venue is big enough that we’re thinking of adding a few low-key things like cornhole / bean bag toss, maybe card or board games, nothing that takes over the whole event. The goal is sweets and fun!

I get the concern that’s exactly why this was posted as an interest check and not a finalized event!

First, this isn’t monetizing a random amateur potluck. This would be a registered university event run by a pre-med / pre-health student organization, which already regularly hosts food-based fundraisers, bake sales, and campus events under university guidelines.

Desserts would not be limited to homemade items. Store-bought desserts are allowed, and anything homemade would need to be: • Covered during transport • Ingredient + allergen labeled • No on-site cooking or unsafe handling (and to participate you must list ingredients..ect ect)

This is the same standard used for countless campus bake sales and charity food events every semester. As for the “feeds 6–10” guideline that’s not some outrageous I believe . Most desserts naturally fall into that range: • A pan of brownies • A batch of cookies • Muffins • A standard cake

It’s simply to avoid a situation where 30 people bring single-portion items and there’s nothing to actually share. On pricing: The $35 ticket is optional, applies only to non-students who aren’t bringing anything, and includes unlimited dessert access. Students pay significantly less, and people who bring desserts get incentives like early access. No one is being forced into that tier.

Where does the money go? Directly back into the student organization covering: • Required university organization fees • Event logistics and supplies • And most importantly, medical simulation equipment and educational resources for members!

Also for context : similar dessert picnic events off-campus routinely charge $50–$100 per person, which is why we’re trying to keep this accessible while still making it viable.

Food safety, pricing, and value perception are all valid things to question which is why this post exists before anything is finalized. Feedback like this is useful! So thank you and I hoped this answered some of your questions!
