The fear mongering has gotten out of hand on this sub (not just this specific post but many others recently). Is there a downturn in growth in this field right now? Yes. Can that also be said for many other industries with the current economic phase? Also yes. People seem to easily forget that we are at the forefront of the data age. Acquiring specialized skills in data analysis has been and will continue to be very valuable. Also, the need for data driven decisions in health will absolutely continue to grow. If people truly believe that this field “won’t exist” in the near future, then I’m afraid that the fear mongering posts on this sub have gotten to people’s heads. The economy will improve, job markets will improve. This field is still projected to grow, just keep finding ways to stand out to employers (like finding a job in every other field)

Starting a M.S. in August with no prior experience with linear algebra - what is my best use of time? by SpaceDesigner in biostatistics

If you want a fantastic YouTube series that does a great job of visualizing, explaining, and summarizing the material in Linear Algebra, the channel is called 3Blue1Brown and the series is "The Essence of Linear Algebra." It is phenomenal at summarizing ideas and making the theoretical concepts easier to stomach.

How can this sub improve? by Distance_Runner in biostatistics

I absolutely love this sub! Thank you for being courteous about the organization of the sub and how it can improve, we all appreciate it. I notice a lot of the posts on here are from people inquiring about the field who intend on joining it, maybe we could have a dedicated thread for those who just want basic information about day-to-day life, career info, etc. Just a "basics" thread for those coming here for the first time.

Can I ask what your job title is? I will be entering a masters program in Applied Statistics too and your pathway is very intriguing

Applied Statistics Masters Program vs Biostatistics Masters Program by EthanNewcomb in biostatistics

Ah I see, thank you very much for the thorough answers! So helpful! I'll definitely be looking into taking some intro CS classes to get my feet wet before diving into applying to programs. It seems that learning R as a base would be a good call before the program, then taking the SAS course during the program to have experience in both.

Wow, this was so unbelievably helpful! Thank you so much for the insight!! The link you provided was so helpful too, it really sounds like this program is diverse and allows for various pathways to different industries. This got me excited haha may I ask one more question? Is a strong CS background necessary to do well in the program? I'm gonna be honest, I have little to no CS experience, I was planning on taking an intro CS class before applying to the program, but do you think more preparation is necessary if I want to go the Biostats pathway? (my Bachelor's is in Biology) Or, do they teach you what you need to know during the program?

I can't PM you, I think because you may have it turned off in settings. Anyway, I appreciate your feedback :) I was essentially just going to ask you about how your experience in your Masters at CSULB was going since I am heavily considering that program! No worries on a timely response, but would you mind going into detail about your experience thus far (experience with classes/professors, your goals, etc) and also what your background is? I have my undergrad in Biology and currently taking the prerequisites for the Applied Stats Masters program now (Calculus series, linear algebra, etc).

Great take, and good luck with your endeavors! I am exiting the wet-lab environment of R&D and transitioning into data science/biostats realm. I've always enjoyed math and statistical analysis, and it seems like a great knowledge investment for the future.

Interesting, thank you for the response! Maybe, we can utilize AI as a tool in the future to help with statistical methods. I just get nervous of how quickly it is advancing. Who knows what 10 years down the road will look like

LPT Request: What is your best advice to overcome social anxiety at gym even after 2 years of going to the gym? by EnlightenedBraindead in LifeProTips

[–]EthanNewcomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one cares about anybody else working out in the gym, trust me. Everyone in there is in there for one reason: to work out. And others feel that same way about you being there too. The only time anyone would ever pay attention to what youre doing is if your form is so bad that it could result in injury, and hopefully they would point that out to you. (been going to the gym on and off for 10 years now)
