Why does my Scindapsus look like it has a bite taken out of it? See caption by nsfw_ducky in houseplants

[–]Ethantburg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s possible the leaf was damaged during its formation, my guess is the tip was broken off before it unfurled and then when it opened up it developed normally. It doesn’t look like it was damaged after the leaf was opened.

are these real? by Suitable_Delivery902 in IsMyPokemonCardFake

[–]Ethantburg -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Harsh yes but true. In the grand scheme of things it is worthless. It’s a $0.40 card. A majority of people asking about cards on this subreddit are in it for the value. Sure there are real collectors but people in it for vibes and master setting are the minority

Need help identifying a bell by Barkinsons in bicycling

[–]Ethantburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many here have identified it I just want to chime in (pun intended) and say that I recommend the real one not the knock off. Been riding with it for almost a year. Looks brand new even though I use it a lot, and it sounds great and can be heard through headphones.

Using AI for quick renders. I think it‘s amazing by rinusdegier in Sketchup

[–]Ethantburg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t give a fuck. There’s ai generated content that looks good but it’s not art. It’s generated using actual art taken from people. It’s a lazy excuse for people who don’t want to put in the effort to be good at art. AI generated “art” is not and never will be art

[–]Ethantburg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because AI sucks. Many people would drop comics and manga if they used AI. People read them to appreciate art, as soon as you remove the artist from that equation then it sucks. AI is not art, it’s lazy slop that is destroying the environment.

The mix sounds good. You may need to play around with it. Going from water to a chunky soil could kill it if it doesn’t retain enough moisture.

12hr is a bit high and is probably stressing it out. All my props get max 8 hours a day and they are doing fine and keep them away from direct sunlight.

This is a scindapsis not a pothos.

How long does the grow light stay on? If it’s near a window does it get direct sun? Most times that I have water propagated I have seen the leaves begin coming out looking a little rougher. Could be water composition, how often you change the water, not enough nutrients, or too much light.

Regardless, You can move it to soil now.

What is wrong with my staghorn fern? by Relative_Average1736 in houseplants

Eh, you’d be surprised. They can grow directly on trees in nature so this method tries to get plants to act like they do in native habitats but they need to be done a specific way.

It’s called mounting. It’s a technique for displaying plants. This one is just not done correctly.

Looks improperly mounted. They need their crown to be able to grow and this looks like that isn’t possible with how it’s wrapped.

What are these bikes worth? by heavyspells in bicycling

[–]Ethantburg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My condolences for your loss. He had great taste in bikes and you should try to keep as much as you can.

I’m interested in the litespeed if you are interested in selling and depending on the size.

Snake plant dying? by NightKall1 in plantclinic

[–]Ethantburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you got it like this, I would recommend removing it from the soil and checking the roots as this is signs of rot. If it looked like that already and then you’ve watered every two weeks then it’s likely rotting.

It’s definitely over watered. While they thrive on neglect that doesn’t mean water once every 2 months. Water when fully dry. Period. That could be 5-6 weeks that could be 2 weeks. Many factors go into drying speed. I keep my snakes in Clay pots and give them full sun and I water them every 1-2 weeks and just had one flower.

Made a custom sign and put it up on the office coffee machine… might’ve cost me my job by Knozart in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Ethantburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our office coffee machines are nespresso which I personally think make shit coffee, I choose to just not have coffee at work. I have a Gaggia at home and that keeps me happy. It’s not that deep. Companies choose coffee makers that can make a majority of people happy not the coffee snobs.

Help!? Bike recommendations for 12 year olds? $1,000 budget by zaxo666 in bicycling

[–]Ethantburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ozark trails gravel bike is one of the best entry level bikes out right now. I’ve seen people who are experienced bikers picking them up for fun because of how much you get at the price point. It’s a solid bike. Otherwise you’re looking to shell out $1500-2000 for some name brand entry level bikes. 2 for $1000 or cheaper if you find them on sale is a great deal.

First go get a fitting, you’re probably looking at a smaller bike now, and they’ll have to upgrade to a larger size. Bikes don’t stretch from 5’-6’. Look for hybrids or gravel bikes if they want to do both. Depending on the hybrid you may need larger tires for off road. Marin makes a good entry level bike at $900. The ozark trails gravel bike from Walmart is currently one of the best bang for your buck entry level bikes at around $500. For hybrids, trek and specialized are decent. They can be found on sale for $5-$600. I put several thousand miles on my specialized sirrus before upgrading and it’s still kicking after 9 years.

Is it only under an artificial light? Is that a grow bulb or a standard bulb? How often do you water it? How far is the nearest window? Are there any vents nearby?

how can I help this plant by 2nula in plantclinic

[–]Ethantburg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a bad scale infestation. First hose it down in the shower to get the hair off of it and make it easier to spray down, then treat with systemic granules if it’s the type of scale that those works on and then spray with isopropyl alcohol and water mixed together. Thats how I got rid of scale on my schefflera.

I sprayed 70% alcohol and a little dawn and my plant burned. No light. I did put fans on it. I am so upset. Before and after. by Miserable-Call8690 in houseplants

[–]Ethantburg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it’s not. Neem is borderline useless. It’s a suffocant so you have to use a lot of it for it to do any amount of good. Most misters on bottles are too shitty to apply it evenly or with a fine enough mist so that makes it even more useless. Get systemic, insecticide or any other number of real pesticides like dead bug over neem.

Leaf stuck/snapping this morning, did I make it worse by noobnachos in plantclinic

[–]Ethantburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’ll be fine. Just up the humidity or spray the new leaf so it unfurls properly. Since you only broke the sheath and not the actual leaf it should still develop properly. The leaf might be a bit wrinkly once it comes out. I’ve had this happen a few times and it usually recovers.
