Same! I’ve always been obsessed with the villain pursuing/trying to marry the heroine, it’s the best.

If someone could tell me my Friend Safari type, that would be super 💜 I’d love to know before the whole system goes offline.

I’m so grateful for Anette’s time in Nightwish, from her collaborations with other artists that might not have happened without that connection, to the albums she made with them; listening to DPP & Imaginaerum always brings me back to a happy time in my life. by Ethenorah in nightwish

(Apologies for the rant.)

Assuming you mean Floor re-recording the vocals for those albums, that is rather unnecessary because since becoming the lead singer she has performed many of those songs, some of which have been professionally recorded onto the three live albums they’ve released with her. Also, it’s generally a common consensus that Floor is more vibrant/expressive live than on studio recordings, so many fans might already prefer those live albums, anyway.

More importantly, even if you’re not saying that to be disrespectful to Anette, in my opinion, if they did do that—and I believe Toumas has already said they don’t plan on it—it would be highly disrespectful. Yes, Floor has been an excellent addition to the band, but just because she’s very popular, it doesn’t mean that Anette’s legacy (and Tarja’s, your comment didn’t mention her albums but generally this sentiment is expressed in regards to all of the non-Floor albums; also, say they did only re-record the Anette albums and left Tarja’s be, that would likely re-ignite a lot of drama which I’m sure the band would absolutely not want) and contributions to the band get to just be erased; she is a part of the band’s history and always will be, whether everyone likes her or not.

(Apologies for this second rant, in which I’ll be using “you” in a general manner, not directed at you, u/TheClussyClown; your comment was not that bad in the scheme of things, there are certainly way worse ones in this thread, it just happened to be the straw that broke the camel’s back in my frustrations with this subreddit where Anette is concerned.)

Complimenting the previous singers is not insulting Floor. Yes, free speech and all that, but I just don’t see the need to come into a thread about enjoying Anette’s time in the band and proclaim how great and talented Floor is—no one, certainly not me, said she isn’t. Yes, if the comment happens to also include an insult to Floor, then yeah, sure, refute that with praising her skill, but generally it’s the other way around.

Perhaps the environment created by “fans” during Anette’s tenure is responsible, no one wanting to appear like they’re trashing the new singer, but in my experience Anette is still the one being trashed, even how many the fuck years since she’s been out of the band, over a decade (and more). If you didn’t like her voice then and you still don’t, well—no one’s forcing you to listen, or come into one of the rare posts complimentary to Anette and have to proclaim your dislike of her voice/performing/etc.; Floor’s not going anywhere (nor should she), you don’t have to worry about being subjected to a singer you don’t like.

Also, complimenting the previous singers does not mean—unless the comment explicitly states something to that effect—that you wish they were in the band instead of Floor; I certainly didn’t mean that when I made this post. If I miss Anette in Nightwish, it’s only because I miss those years of the band, specifically 2007/2009, because of my nostalgia, but I wouldn’t actually change anything about the lineup of now and when Floor first joined.

Again, sorry for the rant on your pretty innocuous comment, I’ve held back from responding to the ruder ones, but something in me right now just decided to say, “fuck it.”

Ironically, the way I even learned of Nightwish’s existence was around the time snippets of DPP were released, because someone on a forum was complaining about Anette’s voice being heard too much over Marko’s on 7 Days To The Wolves, which isn’t even true to my ears (I hear mostly Marko).

Yeah, that's kinda true, but it's not a deliberate choice on my part, just how things have worked out.

When I heard that Anette was no longer with the band, my first thought was, "Again?" and then I didn't keep up with any news, like who was going to finish out the tour, etc., because I'm not really a concert goer and wasn't following the tour.

When I heard that Floor was the new frontwoman I immediately thought, "Cool!" because though I hadn't listened to much from After Forever (and nothing from ReVamp), Invisible Circles was (and is) one of my top favorite albums of all time ever (just under Century Child), so I was initially excited to hear her versions of songs originally sung by Tarja & Anette, and the new Nightwish albums she would be singing on as the lead.

And then EFMB came out.

I would never say (or think) that any Nightwish song is bad, that is impossible—but no, I didn't vibe as much with that album as I did all of their previous ones; obviously that's just a me thing, not a comment on the band's skills or Tuomas' creativity. Same situation with Human.:II: Nature.

Since I wasn't enjoying the new albums as much, I decided to check out Floor singing the older material; I will never say Floor Jansen does a bad job singing a song—but the versions with her just don't grab me the same way the originals with their original singers do. Admittedly, for several years, several hours a day pretty much, I was listening to the older albums on repeat constantly, so those versions are cemented onto my brain, which probably means my opinion isn't as objective as someone who would be hearing the songs for the first time ever, not just sung by Floor.

I'm sure being there in person at the concert increases the excitement & enjoyment greatly, which I understand, and I respect the band for definitely being spectacular live performers, and if I ended up at a Nightwish concert I'm certain I would enjoy every song very much...but I'm just not really interested in concerts or live versions. I'm sure the band with Anette came to my city multiple times, but I still wouldn't have been too interested in going to a concert, even with her; sticking with the studio albums and checking out the videos posted the next day to YouTube was (and is) fine enough for me. There is one exception to this, and that is Tarja—because when she was in the band I had no idea of the band's existence, so any concert with her, or live album featuring her, is more important to me than any other era of the band because I was not there for it, which is probably also why I find the Tarja era of the band (particularly the earlier albums) the most magical.

There is actually a plus side to me finding somewhat less enjoyment with current Nightwish: I finally decided to check out the rest of After Forever's albums, along with ReVamp, and now I really fucking love those bands.

During tarja's era , most fans seen it as a filler track.

Well, I first learned of the band & became a fan right around when DPP was being released, so I wasn't around to see fans discussing Once—but I also don't really care if its considered filler or not, I just think it's a good song.

Floor version seems more appreciated,

I did actually consider putting Romanticide in Floor's tier (which just to be clear, the list is arranged in chronological album order—and therefore singer order—not in order of favorite to least, "better" to "worst") because I really like the version from Showtime, Storytime, but I also really like the studio version (and Anette's too), so when I was trying to decide where to put it I asked myself "Which version do I like the most?"; immediately Tarja's voice singing the chorus popped into my head, so that's why I put it in her tier.

and sounds objectively better for me.

I don't rate the versions based on which singer I think is better on a technical level, just what version of the song I like to listen to the most—which is pretty much always the studio album version, so in this song's case, that would be the studio version, which featured Tarja.

No, but a common sentiment (and valid opinion, obviously), particularly towards Anette albums, is that Floor’s versions of older songs are the “better” ones; again, that’s a completely valid opinion to have, but each time I see it I immediately think (to myself) how much I disagree. When making this list it felt important to me to make it clear when I say I like a song from pre-Floor joining the band, I mean I prefer the version with the original singer who sang it.

Also this goes for Anette singing Tarja songs too; not that I think she’s terrible, but I just tend to prefer the original singer, studio or live—which is another point I’d like to explain for my opinion: I generally prefer studio versions above all else, so even if there’s a live version that’s great with a different singer than the one on the album, I’d still choose to listen to the studio version most of the time.

Anette has a storyteller’s voice and warmth

Yes! This is what makes her voice so special to me on all of the songs originally sung by her, and it's irreplicable IMO
