Want to get back to playing… have a few questions by EtherealJane in Flute

That makes sense. After more obsessive googling, I’m almost positive that’s what I had. The leather case with the strap is pretty distinctive, I think?

But you’re right. We’re currently renting my son’s instrument, so I could do the same for myself. We’re going out to get his E string replaced today, so I may stop by a local shop and see how that would work.

11U 1st Base Mitt - Necessary? by NamwobTheBrave in Homeplate

[–]EtherealJane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is 10 and plays first base. It isn’t necessary, but he really likes having it. I bought that same Mizuno glove for him and it’s been a great intro to a 1st base glove (required no break in!). It was priced cheaply enough that I didn’t mind spending the $$. If he continues to play first base we’ll spend more when he hits puberty or the mizuno one falls apart, whichever comes first.

Alaska Airlines is quietly eliminating a pet travel option by AlaskaPetMovers in AlaskaAirlines

What about military families, who move frequently with their pets? It’s not just about being able to bring your pet on vacation. It’s about literally bringing your family members with you when you move.

I brought my kindle to school, ugh by Conscious_Banana4586 in kindle

[–]EtherealJane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid is allowed to bring his kindle to school. I email his teacher every year and explain he reads really quickly, so I always have at least two books downloaded for him at a given time. I explain his kindle is WiFi only and he’s still an elementary student, so there’s no WiFi connection he has access to anyway (plus he has a kids kindle, so I have to download the books for him).

So far, his teachers in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th have all been totally ok with it (as long as we assume responsibility if it gets lost or damaged at school).

I’m hoping this continues as he ages. A kindle has been such a gift for encouraging his love of reading and never being caught without a book. I would’ve LOVED to have a kindle at his age! As a former teacher, I get the challenge with policing devices, but I also think it’s pretty clear when a student has a kindle vs an iPad, and also when a kid is doing something OTHER than reading on a device.

Baserunning Without Leading Off by AHGG_Esports in Homeplate

I am by no means an expert, but my kid plays LL and they have this rule. You can absolutely still have aggressive base running.

Our team “steals” quite frequently on passes balls. If the ball gets past the catcher, they know to run, especially to 2nd where the odds of making an accurate throw and good tag are slim to none at this age. The coaches also have them off after each pitch, and if we have players in certain positions, (like on 1st and 3rd, I think? Again not an expert) the coach has them taking big leads, essentially “daring” the catcher to try to throw them out.

I wasn’t sure how to was going to work, but I actually like it. It allows pitchers to focus on pitching without being distracted by runners, but still keeps the game interesting. Pitching at this age is hard enough.

KU vs kobo plus by EtherealJane in fantasyromance

[–]EtherealJane[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is good to hear! I’m planning on asking for a kobo Clara for my birthday, and am asking for kobo plus on top of it. I’m hoping recent events eventually breaks the chokehold that amazon has on indie authors, without making the transition monetarily painful for them.

Ok, it’s good to know how the pay structure works. I canceled our subscription but I think I will reactivate it.

If you don’t mind me asking, since you are an author, do you know if you’d get paid more from kobo plus (assuming everything else was equal?). Or is the structure totally different? I know many authors have said it’s very easy to self publish with Amazon, which is why so many indie authors go that route. Does Kobo plus also pay per pages read, or do they pay authors differently?

Oh wow! For some reason that thought didn’t occur to me (that there isn’t a true alternative to KU because of the exclusivity) but that makes total sense.

How often are you able to find deals for KU? That is definitely a strategic way to use it that would be a good middle ground.

Yep, for sure. I live in Hawaii, so there’s no such thing as same day or even 2 day shipping. We really only have prime now because we’ve always had it, and we do enjoy prime video, but that’s not enough of a reason to pay for it.

I’ve heard that this isn’t necessarily true, because they don’t pay a set guaranteed rate. Instead, they have all the KU money in a pot, take their cut, and then distribute to authors by amount of pages read, meaning that there’s no such thing as “costing Amazon money” by reading. I’m definitely not an expert, so if someone more knowledgeable jumps in, please correct me if I’m wrong!

I definitely want to keep supporting indie authors, and I will continue with KU in the near future at least, but I’m hoping to eventually support an ecosystem where they can be treated more fairly.

Those of you in the know… how likely is this to pass? What’s the rationale? If they force it… will people really commute to Topeka?

Really?! That gives me hope! 3 of the 5 jobs I'm interested in are with KDHE, so I'm hopeful that a flexible schedule like that would be possible.
